Frozen Food Items

Recommended Posts

I am trying to eat healthier - eating more veggies and to save some money, I try and buy some frozen items, instead of fresh (I don't always get it all eaten when I buy fresh, then have to throw it out). So I buy a bag thinking I can serve it in several portions, but after I put it in my freezer it freezes solid as a rock and I can't even bust it apart. Why is it, at the grocery store, the veggies move freely in the bag, but when I get it home they freeze solid as a rock?!! Has anyone every noticed that?

They do that after you open the bag because you let moist (moister than what they use in the factory) into the bag. Tightly sealing it and removing as much air as possible after you open the bag originally is your best bet.

In the factory most veggies are quick frozen, so ice doesn't accumulate, but the moisture stays in the veggie. It could be that they are melting from being out of the freezer too long (in the cart, in the bag on the way home...) and the moisture is then feezing into a solid block in the freezer at home. This has happened to me, so I make sure I select my frozen foods last ont he way to the register, and if it is a warm day I bring an ice chest with freezer bags in it to keep it cold on the way home.

God bless,

Mariann

One way to get around this is to portion it out in smaller freezer bags when you get home, then you can just pull out the right portion for that day without opening a big bag and fighting with a blob.
