Blood Test Results

Hello - I've been having digestive issues for at least 20 years and get bloated after eating even a small meal or snack. By the end of the day I look 6 months pregnant and feel very uncomfortable... This is all on and off until last december when I began having diarrhea after evey meal and then all day everyday sometimes 10-15 times per day. Had a colonoscopy april 3rd, all clear no problems and the blood test for celiac in negative, however I had muscle testing done to see if it was food allergies and he said that it is celiac... I ate gluten free for a week and felt better, ate a piece of pizza and spent the eveing in the bathroom.

Can anyone tell me how accurate the blood test is, should I get other tests? The GI Dr. said that it is very accurate and won't do an endoscope, says it is IBS and wants a test to see how fast my transit time is which is like a matter of hours from mouth to, well you know... and GI Dr. says that I will have to be on lomotal for the rest of my life for the diarrhea... I don't like the sound of that. Should I go with the muscle testers diagnosis and just go gluten free?

Peach.....any doctor that says you will have to be on medication for diarrhea for the rest of your life ought to have his medical license suspended!

Also, you cannot diagnose celiac disease through a colonoscopy but it's always the first thing they want to do. I am surprised he has refused the endo with all your symptoms and dietary response but that is typical, I'm afraid.

The blood tests.....while they can be extremely accurate for some (myself included), many, many people will test negative even with flaming Celiac Disease going on. However, if you have flaming symptoms and the tests are negative, that is still cause for suspicion for celiac disease/GS. Don't let them sell you that song and dance about IBS because IBS is not a diagnosis of anything. It just means you have a bowel problem and they haven't figured it out yet. I would advise another doctor if it really is important to you that you have a diagnosis from the medical profession. But seeing as they do such a bad job of it, do you think a longer dietary trial would be sufficient to convince you there's a problem with gluten?

You have certainly found the right place to learn about gluten free living, welcome. I agree totally with Gemini. I am also one of the unfortunate ones who don't show up in blood work. That fact delayed my diagnosis by many years. Go ahead and give the diet a good shot, you have nothing to lose but your pain.

Thanks for posting this. I hadn't come across the Alchemist before. Great site!

Psyllium can't sit for more than a minute in the water or it is like drinking sludge. Swallowed fairly soon means it's more like an flavorless undermixed protein smoothie. Chlorophyll ( or two tbsp) really helps the taste, makes it minty. Taking Psyllium and Chlorophyll separately rather than together at first helps determine if there's intolerance to either. Also starting the Psyllium in small doses, starting with 1/2 to 1 teaspoon to tolerate the fiber change.

BuddhaBar, I came across this thread while searching online for celiac insomnia (having also scared myself stupid by finding out about fatal insomnia) and it did bring me some piece of mind as it so closely matches my own experience. I know this thread is old now, I hope you're doing well, and thanks for posting your experience.

That's great news, @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour.  And you might find that if you do have asthma, keeping your reflux under control may help, if my experience is anything to go by.
