Altoids Chewing Gum (peppermint) Not gluten-free

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I bought a tin of altoids chewing gum today because everywhere I had read it was gluten free. I almost gave it to my son with Celiac Disease! He read the label and one of the ingredients says wheat maltodextrin. Why do all the sites and my Celia's Handbook for gluten-free items say altoids chewing gum is gluten free??????

Perhaps they changed the formula. Products lists are out of date as soon as they are created. Formulas are subject to change without notice.

Or it could be that the person who compiled the list considers maltodextrin to be safe even if made from wheat. From the Canadian Celiac Association:

...rarely, maltodextrin may be derived from wheat. Using the most sensitive, scientifically validated R5 Elisa tests, no gluten was detected in wheat-based maltodextrin.

This sort of question about highly refined products gets debated heatedly here all the time.

because the cinnamon altoids gum is gluten free.

one more reason to ALWAYS read the labels.
