Disoriented, And Unable To Walk.

My name is Erin. I'm twenty, going to be twenty-one in September. I'm 5"3 and weigh 132ibs. My mother has celiac disease, and I always knew I had it but I just felt sick if I tried to drink alcohol, or eat too much junk food, so I didn't eat out much.

Within the past month I have found it difficult to breathe, sudden of my heart racing non stop. It gets so bad I feel like I might throw up or pass out. I get confused and can't focus well on anything, and feel well and nothing will calm the fast heart beat. I went to the hospital yesterday and have been a few times recently. They said my RHR was 130, blood test were normal,the lowest my heart rate went to was 100. I haven't been able to sleep I have constant insomnia and fatigue. I'm so tired.

I used to go walking every night and sometimes jog. Now I cannot even get up the stairs to my apartment, without having to come in panting and wheezing and having to lay on the bed. I am practically always laying in bed. I never want to go anywhere because I'm scared to have my heart beat as heavy as it gets. It no matter what all the time usually 90+ heart rate even while I'm laying around not doing excessive anything.

I thought possibly I have gotten Canida from have Celiac disease, so I got Actiiva yogurt, and now I cannot even eat it. I feel nausea eating practicully anything. It makes me very sick, I get dizzy my heart races and I feel very sick. I have trouble eating and if I eat too much or drink too much liquid it seems to sit on my stomach very heavy and I get palpitations. I started taking magnesium because my palpitations were so bad when all of this first started they were like 30 times a day, and would happen so intensively. I'm not sure what to do.. My doctor said my heart rate was fast, but no murmur.

I'm just very scared because I never have a normal resting heart rate. I don't think it's been normal for the past two months. I break out in a full body sweat if I even walk outside, and my heat intolerence is VERY high. I try not to eat much of anything (I've eaten miso soup) but I'm scared to eat anything else because my heart racing as much as it is now, if I eat something I don't want to worsen it. What can I eat? I'm starving :(

I'm scared that this is going to harm my heart before I go back in to the doctors and they figure it out. If anyone has any ideas about it please let me know, any information or any experience of their own I would truly apperciate it more than I can begin to express.

More symptoms I've had are:

Chest pain

Chest tightness

Stabbing feeling in stomach

Sore joints

Headache/Migraine

Tingling all over hands feet and random spots

Severe Nausea

Flaking nails

Cold sweat on hands and feet

heat intolerant

ringing in ears

insomnia

fatigue

slowed walking/moving

arms feel heavy/dead/tired

inability to conprehend

pressure behind left eye

Oh Honey! I had this, too. Found out I was extremely anemic ( iron deficient) . You do not make the blood cells that carry oxygen properly. This makes your heart beat extra to get Oxygen to your body. It means you breathe hard to try to suck up O2 . When you have Celiac, your intestines can't absorb nutrients as well as a healthy body. I took massive doses of iron , vit c, B 12 to get my blood healthy again. Get your blood tested for vit d, b12 & iron. The other problem could be thyroid, so get that checked with blood tests.

Welcome Erin! A few things about your post confused me. When you say you had a negative blood test, did they test you for celiac? With your mother having it, it's very likely you have it too. You need to follow up with a heart doctor to rule out any heart condition, but I will tell you that I had some similar symptoms. Mine included chest pain and difficulty breathing rather than just a racing heart beat. I was only 26 when it started and it was scary. Your racing heart beat could also be anxiety if you don't have any heart condition. Many people with celiac or gluten intolerance have anxiety as well.

If you want to go gluten free you can trial the diet right now. Activia is not a good choice for yogurt however. The last time I looked at Activia it said "may contain wheat" on it (I am in the US so it may be different in other countries. If you want to have more testing done for celiac then you should not go gluten free yet (it could make the test results false negatives). However going gluten free will not prevent the doctors from testing for other conditions. Please try to eat something so you don't lose too much weight and end up in the hospital. Try something simple like grilled chicken and steamed vegetables or some plain rice may calm your system. I hope you can figure it out soon and feel free to ask any other questions you have here.

They didn't test me for Celiac at the hospital but they are at my doctor. I just went to the hospital last night, but the doctor blood test is Monday. The blood test at the hospital they said normal for anything like heart problem, or any reason for what was happening.

The chest pain is very awful at times, but only if I'm getting too anxious or scared about the palps, or my heart racing. If it gets really intense the heart pain starts, and sometimes without reason.

I didn't think about the activia having wheat in it :( I wont eat it again though. That's for sure. I just thought if I had canida that was harming my body it would cleanse it. I have tried to eat meat and it feels like it may come back up? I feel very full of water, but I'm dehydrated. I will try to get some grilled chicken tonight. Thank you so much for this suggestion. I've been practically sucking down vitamins and liquid for two months!

I don't think I have Vitamin D at home..I took folic acid, B12, baby asprin.

I have medicaid because I've been epileptic since I was 17. It seems like I have the chest pain and panic attacks every day even with nothing really on my mind.

I'll try to eat something in a couple of hours since I just took an iron a bit ago after you suggested it :)

I can see why you are scared, it must be a horrible feeling. You have been the hospital, which is good. If the pain was from your heart being damaged, they can pick that up using blood tests, which I imagine they looked in to at the start to make sure you weren't having a heart attack. Due to the pain you are in you also may have strained muscles in your chest, which can be very painful.

The state your body is in right now will make you feel much more anxious, which in turn could be making you panicky. I'm not saying it's in your head, just that the original pain puts your body in a state of stress, which can then feed in to eachother. In a young and otherwise healthy person, I don't think that the problems you are having right now will be damaging your heart, but of course you should ask your dr about that and get any testing recommended. There are people who sufffer from panic attacks very frequently where the heart races, and that doesn't damage the muscle.

I have been very low in iron and B12 at points, and my heart could pound and race, I was airless and would gasp and I could hardly climb the stairs. It also put me in a weird disconnected state, which was pretty distressing. I definitely second getting your full iron (that's at least ferratin, circulating iron and your saturation), b12 and folate tested, as that could be part of the problem. Get printouts of the tests and post them here if you dont get a clear answer from the dr. If you are low in b12, get the injections, as it will make you feel better much sooner.

If you aren't gluten free already, I would do that right now, in case this is the start of you reacting to gluten. It can cause some extremely weird reactions in people. Also, make sure you are getting some nutrition, otherwise you will stress your body even more. If you can handle dairy, try a liquid meal replacement, here in Australia I know of ensure and sustagen. You will at least get some nutrition to help you out. Otherwise, have you tried pureeing food and eating small amounts? Or soup? Even a few mouthfulls here and there will help.

i was thinking Anemia too- which is very common with Celiac. i really hope you're getting to a doc REAL SOON-

Erin, honey, a couple of quick questions. Does your stomach feel really bloated and distended when your heart races and your have the problems breathing? This sounds like something I get, and it is a food reaction which causes my heart to go haywire. For me it is the pressure from the gas and bloating pressing on my lungs and heart. If you do get the pressure, can you force yourself to burp to relieve it?

@Mushroom I do get bad pressure under my ribs like fullness. But cannot make myself burp.. Not really had much food lately just maybe the Activia cause a food reaction? I've had the pressure under my ribs for a while causing my heart to race and difficult breathing though, no gasiness right now. Stomach isn't so much distended as just kind of feeling very full and nausea really -_-

Yes, this is what I get, the pressure under the ribs; sometimes it feels like a have on a too-tight bra and someone is pulling it tighter :o You start eating dinner, have a couple of mouthfuls and feel nauseous and can't eat any more because there's no room for anything else. It is all related to what you eat.

Can you go on a very basic diet? Eat things like applesauce, rice, bananas, some white fish, maybe some swiss chard? And drink nothing but water??? Or you could even try some jars of babyfood that have no gluten. Something to get you some nutrition while not making you sick until we can figure out what is doing this to you?

P.S. I take Gas-X - it doesn't help a lot but it does help a bit :)

Ohhh Ohh exactly.. the tightness like someone is pulling something tighter on you about your chest. This is when I thought I had a build up of Canida in my system and got the Activia (haha) :P I am going to make a shopping list. I've been dieing to get fish but around where I live (texas) theres not many places to go and get this for a good price. But I will be on the look out soon now that I have some ideas on what to get! I will also even try the baby food! :)

What did you do to relieve the pressure in your stomache?? Like was it a build up in your body? How long did it last you?..:/ I just thought that by two months this would be gone by now?

I've had like about 2 almost three panic attacks in one day. It's usually suddenly just my heart racing when I try to watch a movie and relax, and then I can't control it and my chest hurts. I'm really glad you told me it wont be damaging my heart :) I was so worried about that. I've thought about it ever since I noticed my irregularity of my heart. How did yours go? Have you already begun treatment or do you still have these feelings?

I took Iron and I feel better, I kind of took it quite late so next time I will try to take it earlier. I try to be pretty cautious about those things. I know it's silly maybe I'm just a little scared about how no doctor can tell me what's wrong with me. But an hour or two after taking the iron pill my heart rate has relaxed. It has gone from being the normal of 100+ to now maybe in the 60 range even?!!??!?! I'm so happy and excited I had iron at my house this whole time and I had no idea it could help my heart.. I was so shocked I was almost weirded out that it was so low. I was like "So low is this even normal?!" Because it's been so high for so long. I can't say how much of a difference I feel.

I didn't feel like I was getting oxygen at all to even when I was breathing (the air would even feel hot even if it wasnt?) and I would panic at that, and now when I breath I feel fine! And I don't feel as disoriented. Maybe still hard to walk, but maybe my braincells are trying to recooperate after the loss of all the air! if I have any left now! ;D

Hi Erin,

You should get your thyroid checked for Hashimotos' thyroiditis antibodies, and also check for Grave's disease. Hashimotos' thyroiditis is a condition where the body makes antibodies to the thyroid and attacks it. Hashimoto's can cause symptoms of Grave's disease (hyper-thyroid) and also hypo-thyroid symptoms (low thyroid). People with celiac disesae tend to get other auto-immune diseases more often. including Hashi's. Hashimoto's damages the thyroid but sometimes people on here have reported their Hashimoto's symptoms get a little better on the gluten-free diet. Not always though.

It might help to get some sub-lingual B-12. That's usually either a liquid or a small pill that dissolves under the tongue. Make sure to check all you vitamins for gluten-free.

Does this mean you are still eating gluten and just avoiding junk food and alcohol?

If you are still eating gluten when you get done with celiac screening stop. The symptoms you are describing sound like gluten reactions. The problems with balance and the difficulty walking could be gluten ataxia. Even if your celiac screening is negative you would be wise IMHO to be strictly gluten free.

Thanks for adding those other symptoms to your first post, Erin. You say you know you have celiac; I guess I just assumed you were eating as a celiac, but maybe not? Do give us the answer to that - you said you were eating only miso soup??? Have you also been eating gluten products?

When I took my dad to a heart Arrhythmia specialist at Mayo Clinic we were told the best way to help a fast beating heart was to drink a sports drink like Gatorade. Since I have the same problem of my heart racing at times I found this worked for me. Another note, some people find they have seizures when eating gluten.

That's great that you've had improvements from the iron. I had a rollercoaster of low iron and B12 for about a year, until I got a good GP. We were monitoroing both at 2-3 week intervals for a while, as my levels would just totally crash. It got to the point where i could walk in there and say I feel low in iron, and she would just inject me, as she knew that I could identify them 100%.

I got iron injections, which is quite uncommon, but I just can't digest the iron pills. Iron injections obviously help quicker than the pills, I think when I was at my worst I had weekly iron and B12 injections for about 2 months, and after about 1 month the breathlessness and pounding heart went away. I never had panic attacks luckily, but the airless feeling is pretty distressing!

OH!! I just remembered something! A couple of months ago I got really breathless a lot, it was worse than usual and my iron/b12 wasn't that low. It seems a bit nuts but I stopped taking a medication (the pill) and i noticed a couple of days later that my entire stomach and diaphram had been totally locked up. I only realised when it was better. The breathlessness also went away, it turns out I had been cramped up solid, and so was breathing really shallowly, causing the airless feeling. That ties in with some of the other posters who have mentioned stomach pain and cramping leading to the pains in the chest.

When you pay attention to how you are breathing, are you moving your shoulders and the tops of your ribs, or can you feel the bottom of your ribcage move too? Often when people get panicky they can start breathing shallowly, which can bring on hyperventilation. If you aren't already, it's a great idea to spend some time practising breathing deeply and slowly. It helps get your oxygen levels up too.

Hopefully with iron and B12, and a easy to digest diet, you may find a way to reduce the pain you are in, and the stress with it. It's a very primal thing to freak out when you feel you can't breathe, but if you know what's going on it should help to break the panic response that kicks in. If you can afford it, psychologists have a lot of techniques to help manage panic attacks, it could be a good option if they are happening frequently or stopping you from doing things.

I think the gluten-free diet is a great idea, as it may be the villain behind any low nutrient levels and possible pain from the stomach? I definietly recommend keeping regular food and symtpom diaries, it helps so much to know whether things are improving, or to identify triggers for problems.

Sometimes epilepsy is just caused by gluten, by the way.

    The trials are set to begin at Australia’s University of the Sunshine Coast Clinical Trials Centre. The vaccine is designed to allow people with celiac disease to consume gluten with no adverse effects. A successful vaccine could be the beginning of the end for the gluten-free diet as the only currently viable treatment for celiac disease. That could be a massive breakthrough for people with celiac disease.
    USC’s Clinical Trials Centre Director Lucas Litewka said trial participants would receive an injection of the vaccine twice a week for seven weeks. The trials will be conducted alongside gastroenterologist Dr. James Daveson, who called the vaccine “a very exciting potential new therapy that has been undergoing clinical trials for several years now.”
    Dr. Daveson said the investigational vaccine might potentially restore gluten tolerance to people with celiac disease.The trial is open to adults between the ages of 18 and 70 who have clinically diagnosed celiac disease, and have followed a strict gluten-free diet for at least 12 months.     Celiac.com 06/19/2018 - Could baking soda help reduce the inflammation and damage caused by autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, and celiac disease? Scientists at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University say that a daily dose of baking soda may in fact help reduce inflammation and damage caused by autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, and celiac disease.
    Those scientists recently gathered some of the first evidence to show that cheap, over-the-counter antacids can prompt the spleen to promote an anti-inflammatory environment that could be helpful in combating inflammatory disease.
    A type of cell called mesothelial cells line our body cavities, like the digestive tract. They have little fingers, called microvilli, that sense the environment, and warn the organs they cover that there is an invader and an immune response is needed.
    The team’s data shows that when rats or healthy people drink a solution of baking soda, the stomach makes more acid, which causes mesothelial cells on the outside of the spleen to tell the spleen to go easy on the immune response.  "It's most likely a hamburger not a bacterial infection," is basically the message, says Dr. Paul O'Connor, renal physiologist in the MCG Department of Physiology at Augusta University and the study's corresponding author.
    That message, which is transmitted with help from a chemical messenger called acetylcholine, seems to encourage the gut to shift against inflammation, say the scientists.
    In patients who drank water with baking soda for two weeks, immune cells called macrophages, shifted from primarily those that promote inflammation, called M1, to those that reduce it, called M2. "The shift from inflammatory to an anti-inflammatory profile is happening everywhere," O'Connor says. "We saw it in the kidneys, we saw it in the spleen, now we see it in the peripheral blood."
    O'Connor hopes drinking baking soda can one day produce similar results for people with autoimmune disease. "You are not really turning anything off or on, you are just pushing it toward one side by giving an anti-inflammatory stimulus," he says, in this case, away from harmful inflammation. "It's potentially a really safe way to treat inflammatory disease."

    Celiac.com 06/18/2018 - Celiac disease has been mainly associated with Caucasian populations in Northern Europe, and their descendants in other countries, but new scientific evidence is beginning to challenge that view. Still, the exact global prevalence of celiac disease remains unknown.  To get better data on that issue, a team of researchers recently conducted a comprehensive review and meta-analysis to get a reasonably accurate estimate the global prevalence of celiac disease. 
    The research team included P Singh, A Arora, TA Strand, DA Leffler, C Catassi, PH Green, CP Kelly, V Ahuja, and GK Makharia. They are variously affiliated with the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts; Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, India; Innlandet Hospital Trust, Lillehammer, Norway; Centre for International Health, University of Bergen, Bergen, Norway; Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts; Gastroenterology Research and Development, Takeda Pharmaceuticals Inc, Cambridge, MA; Department of Pediatrics, Università Politecnica delle Marche, Ancona, Italy; Department of Medicine, Columbia University Medical Center, New York, New York; USA Celiac Disease Center, Columbia University Medical Center, New York, New York; and the Department of Gastroenterology and Human Nutrition, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India.
    For their review, the team searched Medline, PubMed, and EMBASE for the keywords ‘celiac disease,’ ‘celiac,’ ‘tissue transglutaminase antibody,’ ‘anti-endomysium antibody,’ ‘endomysial antibody,’ and ‘prevalence’ for studies published from January 1991 through March 2016. 
    The team cross-referenced each article with the words ‘Asia,’ ‘Europe,’ ‘Africa,’ ‘South America,’ ‘North America,’ and ‘Australia.’ They defined celiac diagnosis based on European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition guidelines. The team used 96 articles of 3,843 articles in their final analysis.
    Overall global prevalence of celiac disease was 1.4% in 275,818 individuals, based on positive blood tests for anti-tissue transglutaminase and/or anti-endomysial antibodies. The pooled global prevalence of biopsy-confirmed celiac disease was 0.7% in 138,792 individuals. That means that numerous people with celiac disease potentially remain undiagnosed.
    Rates of celiac disease were 0.4% in South America, 0.5% in Africa and North America, 0.6% in Asia, and 0.8% in Europe and Oceania; the prevalence was 0.6% in female vs 0.4% males. Celiac disease was significantly more common in children than adults.
    This systematic review and meta-analysis showed celiac disease to be reported worldwide. Blood test data shows celiac disease rate of 1.4%, while biopsy data shows 0.7%. The prevalence of celiac disease varies with sex, age, and location. 
    This review demonstrates a need for more comprehensive population-based studies of celiac disease in numerous countries.  The 1.4% rate indicates that there are 91.2 million people worldwide with celiac disease, and 3.9 million are in the U.S.A.

    Ingredients:
    3 cups ripe fresh tomatoes, diced 1 cup shredded green cabbage ½ cup diced yellow onion ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro 1 jalapeno, seeded 1 Serrano pepper, seeded 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 2 garlic cloves, minced salt to taste black pepper, to taste Directions:
    Purée all ingredients together in a blender.
    Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. 
    Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper, as desired. 
    Serve is a bowl with tortilla chips and guacamole.

    Celiac.com 06/15/2018 - There seems to be widespread agreement in the published medical research reports that stuttering is driven by abnormalities in the brain. Sometimes these are the result of brain injuries resulting from a stroke. Other types of brain injuries can also result in stuttering. Patients with Parkinson’s disease who were treated with stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus, an area of the brain that regulates some motor functions, experienced a return or worsening of stuttering that improved when the stimulation was turned off (1). Similarly, stroke has also been reported in association with acquired stuttering (2). While there are some reports of psychological mechanisms underlying stuttering, a majority of reports seem to favor altered brain morphology and/or function as the root of stuttering (3). Reports of structural differences between the brain hemispheres that are absent in those who do not stutter are also common (4). About 5% of children stutter, beginning sometime around age 3, during the phase of speech acquisition. However, about 75% of these cases resolve without intervention, before reaching their teens (5). Some cases of aphasia, a loss of speech production or understanding, have been reported in association with damage or changes to one or more of the language centers of the brain (6). Stuttering may sometimes arise from changes or damage to these same language centers (7). Thus, many stutterers have abnormalities in the same regions of the brain similar to those seen in aphasia.
    So how, you may ask, is all this related to gluten? As a starting point, one report from the medical literature identifies a patient who developed aphasia after admission for severe diarrhea. By the time celiac disease was diagnosed, he had completely lost his faculty of speech. However, his speech and normal bowel function gradually returned after beginning a gluten free diet (8). This finding was so controversial at the time of publication (1988) that the authors chose to remain anonymous. Nonetheless, it is a valuable clue that suggests gluten as a factor in compromised speech production. At about the same time (late 1980’s) reports of connections between untreated celiac disease and seizures/epilepsy were emerging in the medical literature (9).
    With the advent of the Internet a whole new field of anecdotal information was emerging, connecting a variety of neurological symptoms to celiac disease. While many medical practitioners and researchers were casting aspersions on these assertions, a select few chose to explore such claims using scientific research designs and methods. While connections between stuttering and gluten consumption seem to have been overlooked by the medical research community, there is a rich literature on the Internet that cries out for more structured investigation of this connection. Conversely, perhaps a publication bias of the peer review process excludes work that explores this connection.
    Whatever the reason that stuttering has not been reported in the medical literature in association with gluten ingestion, a number of personal disclosures and comments suggesting a connection between gluten and stuttering can be found on the Internet. Abid Hussain, in an article about food allergy and stuttering said: “The most common food allergy prevalent in stutterers is that of gluten which has been found to aggravate the stutter” (10). Similarly, Craig Forsythe posted an article that includes five cases of self-reporting individuals who believe that their stuttering is or was connected to gluten, one of whom also experiences stuttering from foods containing yeast (11). The same site contains one report of a stutterer who has had no relief despite following a gluten free diet for 20 years (11). Another stutterer, Jay88, reports the complete disappearance of her/his stammer on a gluten free diet (12). Doubtless there are many more such anecdotes to be found on the Internet* but we have to question them, exercising more skepticism than we might when reading similar claims in a peer reviewed scientific or medical journal.
    There are many reports in such journals connecting brain and neurological ailments with gluten, so it is not much of a stretch, on that basis alone, to suspect that stuttering may be a symptom of the gluten syndrome. Rodney Ford has even characterized celiac disease as an ailment that may begin through gluten-induced neurological damage (13) and Marios Hadjivassiliou and his group of neurologists and neurological investigators have devoted considerable time and effort to research that reveals gluten as an important factor in a majority of neurological diseases of unknown origin (14) which, as I have pointed out previously, includes most neurological ailments.
    My own experience with stuttering is limited. I stuttered as a child when I became nervous, upset, or self-conscious. Although I have been gluten free for many years, I haven’t noticed any impact on my inclination to stutter when upset. I don’t know if they are related, but I have also had challenges with speaking when distressed and I have noticed a substantial improvement in this area since removing gluten from my diet. Nonetheless, I have long wondered if there is a connection between gluten consumption and stuttering. Having done the research for this article, I would now encourage stutterers to try a gluten free diet for six months to see if it will reduce or eliminate their stutter. Meanwhile, I hope that some investigator out there will research this matter, publish her findings, and start the ball rolling toward getting some definitive answers to this question.

    • Over 100 usually means you have Celiac.  Even if the doctor doesn't biopsy correctly.  Usually, the biopsy results are 3-5 working days.  
    • Hi everyone.  I just received my labwork and my gastro scheduled an endoscopy for tomorrow to diagnose if I have celiac. My bloodwork showed:
      Antigliadin Antibody - IGA - High (>100, normal <20) Antigliadin Antibody - IGG - High (59, normal >20) Tissue Transglutaminase Antibody - IGA - Detected However, endomysial antibody screen (IGA) andimmunoglobulin A were normal. I have been living with Type I diabetes and Hashimotos for some time (T1 for 24 years, Hashi for 5) and for most of the past year I have been for the most part following a gluten free, low carb diet.  I just reintroduced gluten regularly about a month ago for this test.  I have chronic rashes and what was previously thought to be "IBS" symptoms, headaches, fatigue, which is why I started the testing. I guess I am just introducing myself as I am a little overwhelmed right now.  Do you know how long it takes after the endoscopy to have a confirmed diagnosis?  Should that even matter?  My doctor wants me to go on a strict gluten free diet immediately after the procedure just in case.  I feel much better when I am not eating it, so I will go back to eating that way again, but it would be good to know.
    • Thanks for all the good info guys.  I really appreciate so many responses so quickly.  So heres what I've been eating for the last 11 days: chicken or ground beef - grilled; sweet potatoes baked potatoes or rice with salt only or sometimes butter; green beans or carrots well cooked; rice chex with almond milk; canned peaches in juice; unsweetened applesauce.  Then I recently made chicken bone broth and made soup out of it, adding back in some of the chicken plus green beans, carrots white potatoes and rice.  Haven't been eating eggs because I was told on the other site I could be sensitive to eggs (I really miss them)  No cheese or milk.  That's it - that's what I've eaten for 11 days now.  Please tell me if I need to eliminate any of those items from my diet.  I really need some calories.   Other info- I started out on 9 mg of Budesonide (very expensive).  It stopped my D quick in a few days, then turned into constipation.  But when I reduced to 6 mg a day the D came back.  I am back on 9 mg a day but this time its not stopping the D.  So that's it - 9 mg a day budesonide and the gluten free; dairy free diet, but still have two episodes every morning of watery D.  Then that's it for the day, but I feel wiped out for rest of day.  0 energy and continuing to lose weight.   I ordered this today but maybe shouldn't have: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BGVNNNI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&amp;th=1 Its Gluten-free; dairy free; soy free and egg free.    
    • I have Ulcerative Colitis, it flares after my celiac to gluten also, and dairy exposures, along with soy, spices, and if I over do it on stuff like onion/garlic. It also in my case hates fructose/glucose, rare but some people have that also as a trigger.

      I like you enjoyed a "not so restrictive" diet on my Rx for the disease, I could have spices, garlic, onion, mexican food, without flares....but since  not being able to afford the $600+ a month Rx I found alternative treatments. These will help benefit yours also as the method of coating and soothing the intestinal walls is the same do read here on what I found worked. Also go on a bland diet, avoid legumes, grains if you can, I found nut meal porridge (high in calories and fats) to be great, starches, carbs, sugars, flared mine (you might be backwards and find with rice porridge but not nuts, we are all a bit different). You can find all kinds of recipes for it. Roasted meats/crock pot meats made super soft and easy to digest like a shredded slow cooker roast/chicken. Baked avocado with eggs inside, Scrambled eggs, I found made extra moist with a bit of almond milk/coconut milk whipped in before cooking and using a microwave omelette maker to prevent the "hard edges". I stew in greens into these like canned spinach to get my greens and have spoons of  nut butters for desserts like almond butter (avoid peanut butter it is a legume). Avocado is also quite gentle on the guts for most people and chock full of healthy fats and calories.

      Greens need to be cooked to mush so the tough fibers do not irritate your gut....hate to say it but you should be able to "swish" the food in your mouth before you swallow so eating will take a bit longer.
      AS you heal you will be able to eat a bit more like grain free breads, soups, stews, roast, sheet pan meals, stir fry, egg dishes, etc.

      If you having issue with diarrhea try a higher potassium diet or taking some, it helps dry out your stools. I found using 2tbsp of coconut flour in my eggs to make them set up added fiber and potassium. I have various grain free flat breads on this base also,

      Taking BCAAs or bit of protein powder/protein bars between meals can help with preventing weight loss, I just Julian bakery bars, or protein powders like Jarrow Pumpkin, and my own blends....you can probably get by with blends like I used to from Nutra-key V-pro and MRM Veggie Elite.
    • Hi Bree, You need to avoid wheat, rye, and barley, including malt.  It is best to avoid oats and dairy for a few months at the start of the gluten-free diet.  Personally I would avoid soy also. The best thing though is to just stop eating processed foods for a few months at least.  And don't eat in restaurants and also cook your own meals.  A simpler diet is best for healing.  Plus if you are getting sick from a food ingredient it is simple to figure out.  Eating processed foods (like gluten-free pizza) etc you could take in 100 more ingredients in a day.  That means you have to figure out which of those 100 ingredients is making you sick.  Not an easy task.  So I suggest you simplify your diet and learn the easy/fast  way.  Eating out at restaurants will slow your healing/learning down. It is better to take some food with you if you are going out.  Nuts, fruit, hard boiled eggs are easy to carry around.
