I love Za'atar, Dukkah, etc.  Middle Eastern cooking is one of my favourites - I have tons of superb books and I do a lot of experimenting.  :)

Middle eastern inspired chicken cooked with Zaatar (a middle eastern spice mix), purple potato fries. Yummy!

I know the plate is missing veggies, but we started off with a kale soup made with homemade chicken broth, so I can be forgiven!

CP,  you're still new here, so you are just beginning to see what she can do.

Our Love2 ...oh, she does not just "cook", nay,......she weaves magic!

She makes a plate talk and say "thank you, thank you, thank you".

She makes people drool uncontrollably on their laptops.

Legend has it that she once caused a mass migration of nomadic people to walk through 3 feet of snow, following the wispy curl of heavenly aromas right to her doorstep.

oh no, no no......She does not just "cook".

She's a culinary goddess and we are merely her "wannabees".

Some of us have actually plotted to go up and kidnap her and make her the queen of our G F cult. so we can

live happily ever after, eating ourselves silly. It's just that none us really want to trudge through all that damn snow.

Oh, Irish.  You are making me look so good!  But I DO love to cook and weave magic, my pretty.

Soups on. Simple this time, salt, pepper, beef, and carrot. I might throw in some pasta.

I've been feeling kinda bloated so no cabbage this time :(

I CAN HEAR YOU  ! ! ! ! !      ^_^

     we're not very stealthy, are we?

So, if I see a group of starved-looking greedy celiacs at the airport with ski masks and nylon stockings pulled tightly over their faces I will know what to expect.  Don't forget the black sedan getaway vehicle.  And don't forget to look inconspicious!  If not, I just might figure it out!

 yeah, but wouldn't it be funny if we actually COULD do this??  we'd all probably pee ourselves laughing so hard.

Note: we should all bring a change of clothes.

Someone finally picked up on that!  I was wondering when someone would figure it out.  Leave it to Addy.  :P

Every once in a while I almost seem smart. :D There couldn't be any other logical reason for coming back to all that snow, on purpose, every year. I suppose I could have been wrong and you could just be crazy.

Change of plans tonight. Hubby wants George for dinner. I think I'll make some of that Brazilian cheese bread to go with it. It has been far too long since the last time I made that. I may have some asparagus laying around too.

Can you recommend some Love2travel? I like dukkah too. Makes a good crust for chicken.

We had cod "breaded" in potato flakes, mushy peas and oven roasted new potatoes. My scottish wife misses her fish and chips sometimes...

Now if only I could find a vinegar that tasted like malt vinegar, but didn't have gluten I'd be a hero!

Hubs was raised in a British household and finds it very hard, too.  I was a very non-traditional Kiwi and like nothing other than salt anywhere near my fish and chips, and certainly NOT ketchup

Slightly salted fish and chips here too.

I tried the malt vinegar years ago when in Ireland, but I did not care for it.

However (pronounced howevah) Bostonians, nay all New Englandahs I know high -dose ketchup and tartar sauce on nearly everything that comes out of the deep fry-ah.

'tis a shame really, but I think most of my family does not really know what fish actually tastes like.  :D

ah well, to each his own, I guess.

I find it interesting (and confusing/scary) that Coeliac UK has this posted on their website under FAQs::

  • Malt vinegar can be made from barley and is found in pickles, chutneys and condiments such as sauces. If it is used in a product the manufacturer must list the word 'barley' on the ingredients list.

Barley malt vinegar is made using a fermentation process. The end product only contains a trace amount of protein (and therefore gluten), which is well below the level which is safe for most people with coeliac disease. In addition, barley malt vinegar is only usually eaten in small amounts, for example, drained pickled vegetables, sauces with a meal, on chips.

Balsamic, cider, sherry, white wine and red wine vinegars are not made from barley and are also suitable for a gluten-free diet.

Not sure I'd use it anyway. but now I know why a recipe I read recently in a "gluten free cookbook" had malt vinegar in the ingredients. I was thinking of writing to the author.

lol...I always hated malt vinegar on my fish and chips -- was a salt only gal too -- think our bodies were trying to tell us something

so this weekend went all wonky between searching for a new "home" for Mom and a crappy - tired outta no-where afternoon yesterday --

the men took over last night and made chicken with glazed carrots for me with garlic pasta added in for them.

today I am making a pineapple and a peach upsidedown cake and then a few troughs of creamy garlic enchiladas to deliver the extras to another family that we cook for a few times a month and a small batch for Sis and Dad.

one more house to look at today - although I already know where I'd like to move mom if we can figure out the money part of the deal.

long school day, but i'm cutting my lab class to get ready for mom's move -- can make it up with the wed section B)

Everyone have a wonderful week -- hoping the spring sunshine hits whereever you are -- although today is rainy and cool here -- sunshine expected back by wednesday :P

Mmm chips and mayo

Mmm chips and mayo

So I'm not the only one who does this? People think I'm a freak, especially since around here the "thing" is fry sauce. Don't get me wrong, fry sauce is good, and I like ketchup too, and some days I might consider selling my soul for just one taste of malt vinegar. But, since I can't have that, I'll take mayo any time!

Good luck with the appropriate home-hunting for your Mom. I was incredibly lucky (read as: pushy but charming and right place/ right time) when doing this for MIL#1, MIL#2,  and Dad. This is the time in our lives when the children become the parents. sigh.

Have a glass of something (and one for me) when you get home.

MW & Addy

:D the hubs dips his fries i.e. chips in mayo.

I have dipped them in remoulade sauce when they are served with crab cakes. Does that count?

Dinner tonight:

Lamb chops for me, sausage for the hubs with peppers and onions

Beans and greens

Perhaps a dish of  coffee "scream" as I did not indulge last night. ^_^ I can hear it calling from the freezer.

Have the weight machines up to 50 lbs. at the gym now. So, in all, I lifted 500 lbs. today plus a mile on the treadmill, a mile on the bike and yoga. he he he

saturday, we made baked butterfly shrimp w/spinach & arugula salad.  i just chop up a bunch of herbs & garlic, stick them onto the shrimp, bake them in unsalted butter and put olive oil, lemon juice, salt & pepper in the greens.  that's it nice & light :)

yesterday we had the church youth luncheon (fundraiser thing) so we made giant samwiches of ham, turkey, bacon & swiss w/dijonnaise. i put turkey, pancetta, swiss, craisins & mayo on a udi's hot dog roll & it was yums.  also made ham & potato soup (george & potato???  lolz)

i have venison cubes marinating right now for kebabs on wednesday.  today and tomorrow i will be eating every encore in the friger!

oh, and also (finally) got around to making easter bread.  it's so delicious with my morning tea.  recipe is off the baking beauties website and i have made it twice already.

Hey Guys

Hate to be all serious, but can you all take a second to say a quick prayer for my homies in Boston?

Thanks. This is all very disturbing.

It's a civic holiday there (Patriots Day) with

a Red Sox game etc.

I used to go to the game or watch the race from

the Eliot hotel. A few friends ran in it during the years.

Fortunately, all my friends and family are checking in as safe--so far.

Stupid asshats who do things like this. GGRRRRR

Been following here, and wondering about you.

Dreadful business, heartbreaking.

Prayers being said, hope you and others continue safe check ins with loved ones.

Me too. That morning in September 2001 altered our country irrevocably -- each act of terror - homegrown or not - well - we can't go back - but I sure do wish we lived in a world without acts of terror hanging just over the horizon.

I am going to hug those close to me and reach out to those whom I know that are living alone.

Adalaide Mentor

I was out today to buy pillows and dirt and heard on the radio on my way home. My immediate reaction was to say to my husband "what the f*** is wrong with people?" This was followed by a lot more colorful language about asshats in general. (Great word, I use it frequently.) I pray for a speedy recovery for everyone hurt, physically and otherwise today, and everyone impacted by what happened.

LFitts Apprentice

I made a MEATZA. Like pizza, but with seasoned ground beef instead of crust. Bake until cooked, drain off the grease, add toppings and cook until melty. Umm, yeah, nobody really liked this. You have to be a serious carnivore to eat MEATZA and enjoy it. My husband (carnivore) thought it was delicious on a bun -- like a strange hamburger -- but 3/5 of the house did not even want to taste it. Well, it was worth a try I guess.

The easiest way to remember the difference between the cholesterol types is HDL;   H=healthy equals healthy (omega 3, 7, limit 6 & 9 MCFA'S =Medium Chain Fatty Acids. 3= coconut oil, 7= sunflower oil, avocado. The higher your HDL the healthier you are & less likely to experience strokes, clogged arteries Etc. You can even use cold expeller pressed coconut oil on your skin and that is the best kind of coconut oil to eat as well. You want your HDL much higher than your LDL, it will help you stay healthy.   LDL;    L=Lousy. Meat fats, processed fats.  The higher your LDL is the more likely you will have strokes, clogged artery is, heart disease, fatty liver.   Then there's lipids... they are the culprit to be blamed for many heart attacks and things like that they are very small round particles that transport fats. You can have a low overall cholesterol reading and most of it be healthy cholesterol and have a ton of lipids and there's nothing you can do to change the lipid count. High number of lipids is very dangerous.   I'm going on statins is extremely dangerous if you ask me it's just completely my opinion, because I have seen so many of my elderly friends bleed to death internally because of the statins. I mean you wouldn't take all the oil and grease out of your car or a motorcycle and then try to drive it that way would you? You see that's what statins do they remove all of your bodies fats and it doesn't matter whether it's healthy fats or a lousy fats. It removes all of them and then your body can't function properly. You have to have fats to keep your skin supple and to stay warm. Your body also needs fats to digest & process certain nutrients, amino acids & vitamins.   Your brain is composed of fat so is that something you really want to remove with a pill every morning and night?   The thing about statins is that they also make the blood vessels and capillaries permeable. So this is how my friends who were on cardiac medication for a long time and statins ended up bleeding internally to death.   If you want to make sure that your heart is healthy, take odorless garlic at night and magnesium, vitamin K & calcium.

It's also a symptom of EPI.

Yes.  Proportionately a small piece to a toddler is like a whole slice to an adult.  This is an important clue.  She was doing well, accidentally ate gluten and later the old behavior returned. I remember reading posts here of people reacting to a kiss from someone who had just eaten gluten. Recent research indicates that 40% of first degree relatives of someone with Celiac have undiagnosed Celiac Disease.  Father, mother, siblings.  There is a whole list of symtoms of "silent celiac".  Here is an article of symptoms possibly mistaken for other causes than Celiac Disease.  When I finally stopped gluten at 63 years old, I counted 19 things that improved, including lifelong mouthbreathing.  I never smelled bad things, so I as a kid, I learned to respond to the other kid's response in order to not seem weird. I really recommend you pursue testing for all the family if you can, and the whole family following GFD.  It is difficult at first, but the benefits will be worth it.

I get these but where we are, they are called chicken potstickers. I would obviously suggest that it is the ginger in the product that is causing a stimulative digestive effect! So you might want to do what I do, just cook one of them with the rest of your meal so you don't have the same effect. I love the Feel Good products but they are on the expensive side. (I also drink Reed's ginger brew so in general, ginger is a friend of mine..when delivered at the right dose). Hope this helps and have a warm healthy week!

Has anyone had Steatorrhea (oily/fatty poop) as a temporary glutening symptom or should I be concerned I've introduced chronic gluten somewhere (like in meds)? I haven't gotten Steatorrhea since before I went gluten free. However, I moved in the past few weeks and haven't been as careful - I've eaten at restauraunts with cross contamination but only experienced minor symptoms like headache. The past week, I ate only gluten free food at home except I went to Red Robin and got fries (told them gluten-free; allergy). The next day I had Steatorrhea and the day after that.   I know it's a symptom of malabsorption so I was wondering if it was the kind of thing that could be caused by one event or if it was due to a more chronic issue. Of course I will speak to a GI but I recently moved and need to find one.   Thank you for any info
