Sudden "d", Advice Needed

Usually when i get glutened I have constipation, never the big "D". Well I have been learning to go gluten free, and while it hasn't been long, I have been feeling a bit better! I'm having BM every day now, buuut...they aren't quite...right. It's very almost like D (sorry for the TMI!) every afternoon I'll have a snack, and then after a bit a get sharp stomach pains and some bloating (none of the other gluten symptoms) and then the D-like BM about 5 min later. I'm sorry if it is TMI, but for anyone who finds it helpful to know....the BM's are definitely a lighter color than normal, and while they have shape it looks very...peicy? I don't quite know how to describe it, except for I think food isn't being digested properly because it looks as though there is some food partially digested in it....gross I know :/

Anyways, my question is, for anyone who has a soy allergy, did something like this happen to you? I ruled out fructose malabsorption because I eat an apple a day and haven't had this problem before, only just this past week, although I suppose it's still possible it could be FM. If it doesn't sound like a soy problem, could it be that my body isn't processing gluten-free products properly? I don't eat a lot of them right now because I know you arent suppose to in the begining, but I do eat Chex cereal (gluten free). I don't think it could be lactose intolerance because while I often have yogurt for a snack, I didn't today, and I still got the "D" like BM.

All personal experiences or opinions/advice is welcome! Thanks so so much for reading this icky personal post :)

As a side note, I'v been eating choclate quite a bit in the past week, which I usually don't have, and I'v heard chocolate contains soy? anyways just thought I would add that info.

My sysmptoms for whatever it is that I seem to be allergic to are heart palpitations(not nearly as bad as when i eat gluten though, thank god), stomach cramps, blotaing, malabsorption BM's, and overall weak, gross feeling.

I was experiencing something very similar for a while and finally decided to stop eating a gluten free instant oatmeal that I had been eating nearly every day after I read on here that it wasn't a good idea to eat a lot of processed gluten-free stuff. It has soy flour in it. The weirdness has stopped. So maybe it is soy.

What are you eating as a snack?

Soy is one of the top 8 allergens so if it is in something it will be listed in the ingredient list.

Well it depends, but for example today I had a protein bar (looots of soy) 2 squares of chocolate, and some gluten-free cereal that has soy. And i have been eating chocolate almost every day lately, not really sure why, terrible cravings. And when I had the cereal last night I also had a similar reaction that I had today. Normally i have yogurt and whatever else for a snack. Not sure if the yogurt has soy, but I don't think so.....

Hi there Countrygirl, Gluten free chex gets me every time. From what you are describing is a reaction to soy. As for the chocolate craving I had that too about 2 months in and it lasted for about 6 weeks for me. It was like my body was needing something from the chocolate and then after 6 weeks it had enough. There are chocolate bars out there that are soy free but right now I can't remember what they are since I haven't needed a chocolate fix in a long time. Thank goodness. There for a while I got Hershey's cocoa and I ate a teaspoon every day, it got to the point it was irritating, but after a while the cravings stopped. It will for you too.

If you want a protien bar try the Larabars and/or the kind bars. They are dairy, soy, and gluten free. Only problem with them are, they are high in sugar. So a little will do ya.

Anyway, hang in there, it takes a while to figure things out.

Hi,

My first thought is the Chex. I was having the exact same issues (warmning for the squeamish bc this is definitely TMI!) my bm's had a faint odor of petroleum! Say what??! Like if you stick your nose in a Vaseline jar! That is what happens when I eat Chex.

Just thought I'd try to give you a place to start...

PS You might want to stick to a whole foods diet for a while to get an idea what you are reacting to. It really helped me.

Yes i am going to do a kind of elimination diet, where basically I'm going to just eat fruits, veggies, and meat for about 3 weeks, allowing time for my body to get things cleared up at least a bit, then I'll slowly introduce dairy, starting at low amounts to higher dairy foods. I think if I don't have any symptoms/reactions to dairy, and my problems have cleared up on a whole foods diet, I won't test soy. It seems pretty clear to me that if my issues go away and dairy turns out to not be a problem, then it was soy causing my reactions. Those protein bars that i mentioned that have a lot of soy, well i havent eaten those in a good 2 or 3 weeks, and today was the first time iv had one in a while, and bam I feel awful. I think i'll permanently stay away from chex as well.

do you eat the Chex plain, or with some type of milk? (I myself do both.... eating it with some type of milk, or nibbling on it by itself throughout the day :)).

most chocolate has at least a small amount of milk in it.

i agree that it could be the soy, but for me, i get pretty much the same sypmtoms if I eat dairy... and sometimes it takes up to 12 hours, or until the next morning, before the 'D' hits. (normally i have 'C'). Over the holidays, pretty much all it took for me to have the 'd' was to eat a serving of hershey's kisses every day... went back to 'C' after the kisses were gone...

Don't know if that helps, but just thought i'd share my own experience.

It could also be the oats. Even gluten free oats can be a problem for some of us. If you eat other items with soy it is more likely to be that you react to oats.

Thing that helped me was the "if ya cant kill it naked witha spear or pick it off a tree-DONT EAT IT" diet ! LOL..Nothing added, preservatives etc. Organic if u can..Def cut out soy(did the same thing to me), maybe dairy too.. I was a HUGE cereal lover before my dx, and got super excited about the gluten free cereals, but in my first few months had 2 cut them out, now i enjoy the Rice chex (choc kind kills me) and almond milk ! have to let those guts heal :)

Just pay extra extra close attention into what you eat and how you feel after :) Good luck, and your post was not TMI, if there was ever a site that you could speak free about your big "D" i believe this is it ;)

in agreement with one of the above posters: sometimes Dairy "D" doesnt hit me till the next day.

soy doesnt give me "D"... but bloating and gas

chocolate is fine usually, but SOMETIMES gives me acid reflux.

Corn gives me "gluten-like" symptoms.

also- regardless of whether u have FM or not-> a lot of those fake fats & fake sugars in different protein bars and chocolate can give you "D" like Malitol and Mannitol and Sorbitol, etc.

Thank you everyone. I'm going to make an appointment for the Dr.'s, even though my docotor is crap and never believed me when I thought I had celiacs. Maybe now she'll listen! LOL. Anyways I'm going to make an appt. to get tested for dairy and soy allergies, it's just easier this way since I tend to eat the 2 in conjunction.

Just keep in mind that like with gluten intolerance and celiac will not show up on an allergy panel intolerances to soy and dairy will not either. Intolerances and allergies are different types of reactions.

    Celiac.com 06/23/2018 - If you’re looking for a great gluten-free Mexican-style favorite that is sure to be a big hit at dinner or at your next potluck, try these green chili enchiladas with roasted cauliflower. The recipe calls for chicken, but they are just as delicious when made vegetarian using just the roasted cauliflower. Either way, these enchiladas will disappear fast. Roasted cauliflower gives these green chili chicken enchiladas a deep, smokey flavor that diners are sure to love.
    Ingredients:
    2 cans gluten-free green chili enchilada sauce (I use Hatch brand) 1 small head cauliflower, roasted and chopped 6 ounces chicken meat, browned ½ cup cotija cheese, crumbled ½ cup queso fresco, diced 1 medium onion, diced ⅓ cup green onions, minced ¼ cup radishes, sliced 1 tablespoon cooking oil 1 cup chopped cabbage, for serving ½ cup sliced cherry or grape tomatoes, for serving ¼ cup cilantro, chopped 1 dozen fresh corn tortillas  ⅔ cup oil, for softening tortillas 1 large avocado, cut into small chunks Note: For a tasty vegetarian version, just omit the chicken, double the roasted cauliflower, and prepare according to directions.
    Directions:
    Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a cast iron or ovenproof pan until hot.
    Add chicken and brown lightly on both sides. 
    Remove chicken to paper towels to cool.
     
    Cut cauliflower into small pieces and place in the oiled pan.
    Roast in oven at 350F until browned on both sides.
    Remove from the oven when tender. 
    Allow roasted cauliflower to cool.
    Chop cauliflower, or break into small pieces and set aside.
    Chop cooled chicken and set aside.
    Heat 1 inch of cooking oil in a small frying pan.
    When oil is hot, use a spatula to submerge a tortilla in the oil and leave only long enough to soften, about 10 seconds or so. 
    Remove soft tortilla to a paper towel and repeat with remaining tortillas.
    Pour enough enchilada sauce to coat the bottom of a large casserole pan.
    Dunk a tortilla into the sauce and cover both sides. Add more sauce as needed.
    Fill each tortilla with bits of chicken, cauliflower, onion, and queso fresco, and roll into shape.
    When pan is full of rolled enchiladas, top with remaining sauce.
    Cook at 350F until sauce bubbles.
    Remove and top with fresh cotija cheese and scallions.
    Serve with rice, beans, and cabbage, and garnish with avocado, cilantro, and sliced grape tomatoes.

    It seems a Phoenix realtor Mike D’Elena is hoping that his trendy claim will catch the eye of a buyer hungry to avoid gluten, or, at least one with a sense of humor. D’Elena said he crafted the ads as a way to “be funny and to draw attention.” The idea, D’Elena said, is to “make it memorable.” 
    Though D’Elena’s marketing seeks to capitalizes on the gluten-free trend, he knows Celiac disease is a serious health issue for some people. “[W]e’re not here to offend anybody….this is just something we're just trying to do to draw attention and do what's best for our clients," he said. 
    Still, the signs seem to be working. D'elena had fielded six offers within a few days of listing the west Phoenix home.
    "Buying can sometimes be the most stressful thing you do in your entire life so why not have some fun with it," he said.

    Celiac.com 06/20/2018 - Currently, the only way to manage celiac disease is to eliminate gluten from the diet. That could be set to change as clinical trials begin in Australia for a new vaccine that aims to switch off the immune response to gluten. 
    The trials are set to begin at Australia’s University of the Sunshine Coast Clinical Trials Centre. The vaccine is designed to allow people with celiac disease to consume gluten with no adverse effects. A successful vaccine could be the beginning of the end for the gluten-free diet as the only currently viable treatment for celiac disease. That could be a massive breakthrough for people with celiac disease.
    USC’s Clinical Trials Centre Director Lucas Litewka said trial participants would receive an injection of the vaccine twice a week for seven weeks. The trials will be conducted alongside gastroenterologist Dr. James Daveson, who called the vaccine “a very exciting potential new therapy that has been undergoing clinical trials for several years now.”
    Dr. Daveson said the investigational vaccine might potentially restore gluten tolerance to people with celiac disease.The trial is open to adults between the ages of 18 and 70 who have clinically diagnosed celiac disease, and have followed a strict gluten-free diet for at least 12 months.     • For the brown rice, it could be the fiber (assuming you mean whole grain rice, which still has husk on it). If I have been glutened recently, whole grain brown rice and other fibrous foods are not digested well by my GI tract. Because I get non-GI symptoms, I am quite sure that the cause is not gluten. You might stay away from whole grain rice for a bit, or transition slowly (mix white/whole grain in increasing proportions as tolerated). For pork, it is unlikely that the type of feed would have an influence on the gluten content of the meat. Gluten is not transferred into the muscle (meat) or eggs of animals. It stays in the GI tract. There could be some small chance of contamination from the GI tract during butchering. I don't know much about commercial butchering/abattoirs, but I think that this is heavily guarded against due to the risk of fecal contamination. Sometimes, the thing we think is making is sick is in fact not - sometimes it is something else that we do in association with that food. Perhaps there is a seasoning that you use with pork, or perhaps you use certain kitchen tools for pork that are contaminated. I used to always get sick when I cooked butternut squash. It was because I was using a hacksaw to cut them, which was contaminated with drywall (drywall contains wheat). If you are buying your meat from a small, independent butcher (where they bread/flour meat in-store), you might think about switching to buying big box grocery meat. At big box grocery stores, they just section up the meat that is pre-butchered. You could also be allergic to pork - this is rare, but some people are (especially those who are allergic to cats). Hope this helps.  
    • What pigs eat would note really get to your eating their meat, this might be different with something that you can not clean out well or eat part of the digestive tract like farmed crayfish, shrimp, or poorly cleaned fish/chicken. But pork...unless your eating part of the intestines the meat should not bother you if they ate even pure wheat.

      Brown rice, this could be a issues with CC, starches, fiber etc.  There have been major CC issues with grains and legumes in recent months. I suggest sticking to a safer brand like Lundenburg and or visually sorting your rice, and washing it before cooking it. Again it could also be a fiber issues or starches.

      Other thoughts some people bit by a lone star tick develop allergies to pork and or beef.

      Some people are just intolerant to certain foods, and we can develop many food sensitivities to just about anything with this disease.     • Brown Rice and pork are meant to be gluten free yet they set me off. Pork I reckon is due to them eating cereals.  Brown rice I have no idea although white is fine . Does anyone else get set off by them or is my body just strange?
    • I live in a town with hy-vee grocery stores. If you go to their website https://www.hy-vee.com/meal-solutions/special-diets/default.aspx and click on the gluten free foods link you will find every hy-vee product that is gluten free. I have had many and have never had a problem.  This list is for Hy-Vee products so it will not include other companies. I seem to survive off a lot of PB and J sandwiches when traveling. 
    • Hi Mavis, Celiacs are often low on Vitamin D, vitamin B-12, and sometimes iron, and selenium. Wheat is pretty popular here too.  But there are other options like rice and buckwheat, quinoa, etc.
