Different Medical Problems

Hi! I hope someone here could help, I can't seem to get answers from my doctors, all they say all the time is maybe and anything is possible.

I was diagnosed with celiac disease about a year ago ( although I have had symptoms for ages ). Even before I was diagnosed, every few months some new medical problem comes up, and I was wondering if any one here has or heard of the following medical problems - if they have anything to do with Celiac: Erythema nodosum, Levido Reticularis (= a spider-web looking rash with a fancy name...), a very serious Vitamin D deficiency, Hashimoto Disease, arthritis, Osteoporosis. I am only 30 years old... is there anything else to expect ?!?!?? :o

Thanks, Chana

Yes alot of those are highly connected with celiac.

Osteoporosis, Vitamin D deficiency, Arthritis, Thyroid...all connected...not sure about the others but good chance that they are too.

If celiac goes untreated you are 40-100 times more likely for cancer, diabetes, etc.

Have you been 100% gluten free? Including checking products like makeups/shampoos/soaps/etc? Anything that can come in contact with your mouth in any way should be checked.

Also, by now you know that gluten is hidden under many things right? and to be careful of cross contamination?

Being gluten free should help these problems. Your Vitamin D deficiency tells me there is a problem with absorption still. This leads me to think there is something sneaking in for all of this to arise.

Was this all after diagnosis? Are you feeling any better?

How long have you been gluten free?

Thanks for the reply!! Since my Dr. really doesn't seem to know much about Celiac, I've been learning as time goes by. I really try and I think I'm 100% gluten free, although I had no idea I had to look into makeup/shampoos/soaps etc.

most of my problems were diagnosed before the celiac, and after I was diagnosed with osteoporosis, that's when one Dr. came up with the celiac idea. I still every now and then have an occurrence of some of the Diseases, but I don't think it has anything to do with the gluten, since I basically eat the same thing every day...!!

Since I'm off gluten which is about a year now, I've been feeling soooo much better!!

Do you know if shampoo/conditioner of Herbal Essences is a problem? Cetaphil soap, and how about Avene products - sunblock, cleanser, creams?

Thanks again, Chana

All of the Herbal Essences shampoos and conditioners that I have seen contain wheat. Most of them say wheat protein on the label. I don't use that brand anymore.

I use Dove shampoos/conditioners/bar soaps/and hairsprays because they will not hide anything on the label and are one of the safe brands unless otherwise stated.

Alot of lipsticks have wheat in it as well. The whole Bare Escentuals makeup line is gluten free.

Sunblock-banana boat and coppertone are gluten free

Neutrogena has a gluten free product list out too.

Clearasil total control and original blue lines are both gluten free

Those are just some things off the top of my head. You can find out about all the products on here in the product section. I am not sure about that brand you are talking about but someone on here may know. If you have a question about products you can ask there too :D

Herbal Essences contains wheat?! I mean, I use it but my kid uses something tear free, but I didn't realize this! Now I'm going to go check his shampoo!!

Given that it was a number of years while your body was not getting the nutrition it needs, it's not surprising that things may still pop up slowly. With the vit D deficiency now able to be addressed (healing intestines will allow you to better absorb the vitamins), hopefully the osteoporosis may start to reverse. But remember that your body was but under a lot of stress and didn't get what it needed, nutrient wise, for a wihle. I hope you see the end of it soon though! :-)

My Herbal Essences does not contain wheat protein. Maybe they've changed the formula? Each person has their own shampoo in our family and none have wheat. I never thought to check.

Hi,

I have a Vitamin D deficiency and am on supplements - 1500 units 3X a week. I have a check up at end of month, so I'll let you know what happens then. Probably more blood work!

I was also diagnosed with ITP, an autoimmune blood disease. Essentially, my platelets are being eaten up by my immune system. When they go lower then low I bruise easily. Now mind you, it's not the normal easy bruising. We're talking deep purple marks that do not hurt and I cannot remember bumping .... because normally, nothing would have happened. I'm beginning to think that when I've been glutened the ITP rears it's ugly head.

I don't know if what I have is DH, but I do have a rash on my body .... tyring to be delicate here. Under my breast and in another place I'd rather not discuss.

I, too, feel like my body is falling apart, although I'm turning 50 in December. Unlike a lot of other people on this board, I felt absolutely positively fine when my diagnosis was being considered. I was in the best place in my life ... no stress, new job in my profession that pays well, etc. A routine exam turned up weird blood results (at the end of April); by the time celiac disease was diagnosed I had the complete set of symptons and had diagnosed myself. I have been tested for everything, including lymphoma. I guess my only consolation is that the time span is so short .... I cannot imagine having the symptons, going from doctor to doctor for years.

I have a bone density test tomorrow - I'm expecting the worse. Oh well, just one more thing to deal with!

Hang in there

Ann

That's good...maybe some of them do not contain it. You may want to check with the company to see if it is gluten free though. I did not call the company so I do not know if any of them are considered gluten free but know that some aren't

Thanx!! I never even thought of looking on a shampoo or conditioner label, it seems that the conditioner is a problem!!!! I guess starting tomorrow and Sunday, I will be on the phone all day trying to figure out if anything else I have been using is a problem.

Hi I see you wrote this a while ago, but I also had Erythema Nodosum for a few months, and was then diagnosed with Celiac a month ago. I don't know how bad your case got, but I had huge red swollen bumps/black and blue bruises all over my shins and then even had my left ankle so swollen that I couldn't wear any shoes that weren't sandals! It got really crazy. My doctor told me that the only "cure" for it is rest, because if you have it then it means your body has been in overdrive, per say, so I have been taking things a little easier and the swelling has gone down. I still have black and blue bruises, but the bumps are gone. It should go away in about another month or two. Has anyone else had this??

My daughter had erythema nodosum at about your age. On top of it she was pregnant. I hope that you have seen a rheumatologist. Because she was pregnant, she couldn't take anti imflamitory drugs but was put on prednisone. It did leave her with arthritis in her wrists and elbows. Her legs were just covered with those bumps and bruises along with the swollen ankles. To top it off she even got a lesion in her eye. The ratest cause of erythema nodosum is pregnancy. She didn't get it on her 2nd pregnancy and is now pregnant with her 3rd. She did have a lot of allergies when she was little. I wonder now if she doesn't have IBS or celiac. I wish you luck and hope that you recover soon. Wendy

I get bruises much more now. Don't tell me there is an autoimmune reason for it ! Not another one ! I have 4 autoimmune problems. Hashimoto's Thyroid, Pernicious Anaemia, GI, and Vitiligo.

I have always bruised easily, awful ones sometimes and I can't even remember bumping anything

Yes I also have Hashimoto's Disease, osteoporosis, scoliosis and osteo-arthritis

I know that I am more susceptible to getting Type 1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis which are both auto-immune because I already have Hashi's and both RA and Type 1 are rampant in my family through the generations :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

We get most of our vitamin D from sunshine, so if you're not in the sun, you should probably supplement. They're finding the D they add to milk really isn't enough, and it is the wrong kind anyway. You want to take vit. D3, the oily sort.

Here's a great web site about D: Open Original Shared Link

This article does not address migraines at all.  Yes, red wine and sulfites are often mentioned in connection with migraine triggers. With me, any kind of alcoholic beverage in very modest amounts will reliably produce a migraine. Nitrous oxide generators, which are vaso dialators, also will give me migraines reliably. So, I think most of my migraines are tied to fluctuations vascular tension and blood flow to the brain. That's why the sumatriptan works so well. It is a vaso constrictor.

Excessive dietary tyrosine can cause problems.  Everything in moderation.   Sulfites can also trigger migraines. Sulfites are found in fermented, pickled and aged foods, like cheese.  Sulfites cause a high histamine release.  High histamine levels are found in migraine.  Following a low histamine diet like the low histamine Autoimmune Protocol diet, a Paleo diet, helps immensely.    Sulfites and other migraine trigger foods can cause changes in the gut microbiome.  These bad bacteria can increase the incidence of migraines, increasing histamine and inflammation leading to increased gut permeability (leaky gut), SIBO, and higher systemic inflammation.   A Ketogenic diet can reduce the incidence of migraine.  A Paleo diet like the AIP diet, that restricts carbohydrates (like from starchy vegetables) becomes a ketogenic diet.  This diet also changes the microbiome, eliminating the bad bacteria and SIBO that cause an increase in histamine, inflammation and migraine.  Fewer bad bacteria reduces inflammation, lowers migraine frequency, and improves leaky gut. Since I started following the low histamine ketogenic AIP paleo diet, I rarely get migraine.  Yes, I do eat carbs occasionally now, rice or potato, but still no migraines.  Feed your body right, feed your intestinal bacteria right, you'll feel better.  Good intestinal bacteria actually make your mental health better, too.  I had to decide to change my diet drastically in order to feel better all the time, not just to satisfy my taste buds.  I chose to eat so I would feel better all the time.  I do like dark chocolate (a migraine trigger), but now I can indulge occasionally without a migraine after.   Microbiota alterations are related to migraine food triggers and inflammatory markers in chronic migraine patients with medication overuse headache https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11546420/

Then we would need to cut out all meat and fish as they are richer sources of tyrosine than nuts and cheese. Something else about certain tyrosine rich foods must be the actual culprit.

I agree that KAN-101 looks promising, and hope the fast track is approved. From our article below: "KAN-101 shows promise as an immune tolerance therapy aiming to retrain the immune system, potentially allowing safe gluten exposure in the future, but more clinical data is needed to confirm long-term effects."

Thank you so much for having the courage to share this incredibly vivid and personal experience; it's a powerful reminder of how physical ailments can disrupt our fundamental sense of self. What you're describing sounds less like a purely psychological body dysmorphia and more like a distinct neurological event, likely triggered by the immense physical stress and inflammation that uncontrolled celiac disease can inflict on the entire body, including the nervous system. It makes complete sense that the specific sensory input—the pressure points of your elbows on your knees—created a temporary, distorted body map in your brain, and the fact that it ceased once you adopted a gluten-free diet is a crucial detail. Your intuition to document this is absolutely right; it's not "crazy" but rather a significant anecdotal data point that underscores the mysterious and far-reaching ways gluten can affect individuals. Your theory about sensory triggers from the feet for others is also a thoughtful insight, and sharing this story could indeed be validating for others who have had similar, unexplainable sensory disturbances, helping them feel less alone in their journey.
