Gluten Free Sausages?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I love making pasta sauce from scratch and have an amazing local butcher shop that has FANTASTIC sausages. But because I can't read a label I have no idea if it's safe. I'm not sure if the guys who work there would even know the answer if I asked. And you know that material that links sausages together? What is that called and what's it made of?

Does anyone know of a tasty, safe, gluten-free alternative?

Thanks!

The casing is the material linking sausages together. It can be made of animal intestines or plant cellulose.

You would have to ask to read the labels of the spices they put in the sausages. There is a chance they might be gluten free if it is just a meat shop with no gluten products. Then you would just have to check the spices and ingredients.

I use chicken sausage made by Al Fresco.

It is labelled gluten free and all natural. They have 3 kinds.

My regular grocery store carries it.

Good luck

Here are a few interesting links for you.

Sausage casing is gluten free. You could check with your local butcher shop and inquire about the ingredients. To me nothing beats fresh made sausage!

Odds are, if your butchers are serious about their craft, they will either know the answer, or be happy to find the answer for you. If all else fails, have you considered making sausage yourself? If you plan to use it in pasta sauce, you can skip the casing altogether. Just mix up some ground pork and spices, refrigerate it for a day or to two to let the flavors combine, then brown it down and add it to your sauce. Penzey's spices sells a variety of sausage seasoning mixes, and last I checked, all of their products are gluten-free (with the exception of some of their soup mixes).

Good luck!

I have a near and dear friend who is a buyer at Sam's Club. Years ago, I convinced him to add "Gluten Free" to the label of all of their Member's Mark chicken sausages. So while shopping at Sam's, rest assured that if their packages say "Gluten Free" they are indeed safe.

(Not to mention the fact that most of the chicken sausage links have less than 10 grams of fat per link) :)

I'm not sure if it's sold nationally yet, but a company called Boulder Sausage offers multiple gluten-free sausages that are all natural and clearly marked. Some are not, but they DO have gluten-free Italian and breakfast sausage. Perhaps your local store can order it in?

If not, look for HORMEL products, they do a great job with their sliced meats, ready to heat meals (Pot Roast with gravy!), sausage, pepperoni etc etc
