How Associated Is Hasimoto's Thyroid And Auto Immune Anemia To Celiacs?

If you are using sublingual supplements, it should work to replenish your vitamin levels regardless of whether your gut is healed or not. Sublinguals go directly into the blood stream and do not pass through the gut. However, if you have been very sick for a long time, it will still be awhile before you feel normal again.

IrishHeart....my brother is a Type 1 also and has been for years. He has so many symptoms of Celiac yet his doctors say it's all from the diabetes. He is slightly overweight so the AMA gods that he sees tell him he doesn't have Celiac. That's what he wants to hear! His diabetes is not well controlled and his kidneys are in rough shape. As I have said before, I don't care so much for longevity but who the heck wants to be ill while still on the planet? Quality of life is huge and living in denial won't get you there!

You're preaching to the choir, my friend Gemini....heads in the sand. I worry my sister will soon be suffering kidney disease--on top of the other diseases--or heart disease, as she is very overweight. She says "I don't have bowel issues like you!" and for her, that means she does not have celiac! And yes, because she is obese, her doctor does not think it's celiac either! I was FAT and I have it!! idiot doctors! I have tried to tell my whole family (loaded with autoimmune diseases) that they should be tested but they won't do it...why? They do not want to give up their rotten gluten and sugar- filled fast food diets. They are overweight (as I said, I was fat, too--until I lost 90 lbs. very quickly and all my muscle mass, too!) and it presents them with too much "work".

sigh.....

And the really sad part is.....I'll eventually be healthy after healing my gut....and they will all have more crippling autoimmune diseases or be dead. All of that could be avoided if they would just listen to me....

Oddly, the doctor thought I had hashimoto's in Jan. 2008, put me on synthroid which made me go "hyper"--and caused a whole slew of new problems. I told the endocrinologist I felt hyper and racy and unable to sleep...just racing out of my skin. But he said "It's not the thyroid! just stay on the medicine!" After nearly two years of feeling this way, another doctor agreed with me, and I went off meds in March 2010.( I was DXED in Nov. 2010 and went gluten-free.) Since stopping the med and going gluten-free, my thyroid levels and antibodies are normal. No racing, no hypo symptoms....yet many in my family are hypothyroid....go figure?!

My brother had 2 stents put into his heart because he had a 95% blockage in his arteries..at the age of 49! He really does not take good care of himself yet he refuses to see the connection. He takes about 15 pills a day and thinks those will "save" him and make him healthy. He also has a lot of Celiac symptoms but will not hear that he may have that also. I just don't bother anymore as you just cannot help people who refuse to be helped. To each his own....

Hey guys just an update my sil was negative for the celiac panel:) Although they still do not know what ios causing her anemia and hashi's:(

Roda Rising Star

very interesting. i was concerned about this- but getting so many tests. my endo just ran a CBC and everything looked fine- she said that the CBC would be a little off if i was anemic.. is that true? im assuming i should still get my Iron tested just in case?

I had a normal CBC when my endo found out my ferritin was in the toilet! My level was 4 and that is very, very low!! Until I started to heal gluten free (diagnosis came about 2 years later) my ferritin never went up. I felt like CRAP not only from the low ferritin, but the undiagnosed celiac as well. About 6 months gluten free I was able to tolerate oral iron again, before it aggravated my reflux/constipation, and I am happy to report it is now NORMAL!! I was taking two slow fe brand of iron pills a day and didn't have any GI problems from it. Honestly in hindsight I probably would have benefited from iron infusions, but hey, we do the best we can with the information we have at the time.

thanks so much!!! ya- my endo said that if i was anemic- that my CBC would have looked irregular... so thanku for replying- to remind me that maybe my doc doesnt always know.. you're so right. so, next i need to ask for folate & ferritin.

so frustrating.

i dont want that bone scan- dont they inject u with iodine & barium? and other poisonous crap?

If you are talking about a nuclear medicine bone scan they inject you with a radioactive isotope that shows the bones on the scan. They look for any abnormal uptake of the isotope anywhere in the skeleton. This can be done to look for stress fractures, bone tumors, osteomyelitis, etc. There also is a bone density scan or DEXA scan that a lot of people and physicians refer incorrectly to a bone scan. There are several ways this can be done: by scanning the wrist, heel, lower back or hips. This test can evaluate how much bone density you have to check for osteopenia or osteoporosis. There is no injection at all with this test. Hope that helps.

thanku SO MUCH! i am organizing to ask for my next tests... iron, b12 maybe....

can i ask u what your symptoms were from low iron? just fatigue? anything else? im desperate to cure my Shortness of Breath- it is so bad sometimes- that i dont want to live like that for the rest of my life- it's absolutely debhilitating and keeps me from living my life. at first after going on thyroid meds- it improved up to 80%... with episodes of S.O.B. returning from time to time... im just about out of my Xanax .25.. and i asked my Endo for a refill.. and she wont do it and said she could send me to a Pulmonologist!!! ive ALREADY been to one- TWICE- nothing's wrong... im just so miserable sometimes.. and now my numbers are hyper and im getting palpitations... oh she'll give me meds for the palps but not for the anxiety EVEN THO IT:S THYROID RELATED>.. geez cant my doctor have ANY sympathy- im only on a freakin rollercoaster everyday...

ok, im sorry, u didnt ask for that rant :/

i would like "low iron" to maybe be that last 20% of my S.O.B.... but i also cant deal with any constipation- cannot... :/

I'll try and keep it short.

Really this whole journey for me started while breastfeeding my youngest son who is now almost 6 1/2 years old. He had many food intolerance as a baby so I eliminated all rice, dairy, tree nuts and oats from my diet to help him. Later when I was able to add foods back into my diet is when I started having trouble. Around Feb. 2006 I started having severe episodes of tachycardia. I ended up in the ED twice and they almost had to cardiovert me. Luckily the meds worked! I followed up with my pcp and cardiologist and while my thyroid was hypo they didn't want to increase my thyroid meds because of the tachycardia. While I had those tachycardia episodes I was extremely short of breath. Even without them I would get winded just going up a small flight of stairs. It really made playing with my small children difficult. I was put on lopressor for the heart, but it made me feel soooo bad that I said the heck with it and went off of it. They never could find anything wrong with my heart. I saw the pcp many more times that year because of the tachy, fatigue and general sense that something was off. I also developed severe acid reflux during that time. I had the standard blood work done and was told it was fine. Thyroid was fine also so I never was changed. By the end of 2006 I felt so bad and I went back. I was asked if I was depressed! CBC showed low hemoglobin and hematocrit and I was told I was anemic.(all other times it was normal). I was to take iron pills and get my labs rechecked. I did and the H & H went back to normal end of story. I still was having all the same symptoms in 2007 so I found a good endo. She immediatly looked at all my thyroid tests and checked my iron levels and ferritn. CBC was normal but iron tests and ferritin were way low. She did try to get my levels up but I could not tolerate the RX it aggrivated the reflux so bad. She also put me on a combo of T4 and T3 meds. She said that I didn't convert the T4 meds well. I decided one day to look up all my various symptoms and the hashi's and I found links to the celiac. Sept 2008 I asked her if she knew much about it. She ordered a test, the Iga ttg, but that came back positive and a month later I had biopsy comfirmation. This whole time my ferritin level was still only 4 and I couldn't get it up. I did start supplementing again about 6 months after I went gluten free and it was slow going, but it worked and I don't supplement any more as it is normal. I still on occasion get tachy episodes with the shortness of breath, and I have no idea what causes it. I think on some small level that this is just how I am since I have a normal slightly high heart rate also. I do feel that all of it was related to the low ferritin, especially the episodes that landed me in the ED. No one ever checked it until I went to my endo.

I have had tachy and sob three times related to thyroid over medication, after both my boys were born and after my intestines started healing gluten free. Other than that I think most of it was due to the ferritin issues. As far as the fatigue it improved with the iron supplementation, but the real boost came when I startd taking RX vitamin D 50,000 IU weekly. My D level was pretty low also. About 5 weeks after starting the RX I woke up one morning and said "I feel great!" Get you vitamin D checked also.

Rhoda- thanku SO MUCH- i will get my Ferritin checked...

thanku for your story- it helps to not feel alone. ive had panic attacks/s.o.b. off and on since for the last 23 years.. but so relentless the last decade... i ASSUMED it would get better after going gluten free. after going on thyroid meds- it improved up to 80%... and before i could get to the 100%- im now already slipping into Hyper and have to reduce meds- and the S.o.b has gotten worse- maybe the heart racing is causing it now. :/

hey! i did just have my D checked few months ago- lucky i always have them mail me results- cause i was at 26, and my Endo didnt tell me either. ive been taking 6,000 iu a day- and for ive ONLY HAD TO TAKE 1 Muscle relaxer in the last 2 months- (whereas before i was taking either muscle relaxers &/or advil everyday)-

Does D also affect mood &/or breathing??? i definitely notice a difference in my pain/muscles.

i think B12 can also affect breathing- i got it checked last year and it was 640, but idk... maybe it's changed.

OH- and yes- in addition to the s.o.b., i have had tachycardia in the past- when i used to consume gluten... i get it mildly with corn products too. my mom (who also has Hashimoto's)-> had episodes of panic & s.o.b. and noticed recently she gets it when she eats wheat

I’d say celiac is likely.  Please continue to eat plenty of gluten until your endoscopy to be sure that any gluten-related damage can be seen.  Plus it gives you one last chance to enjoy your favorite gluten-containing foods. I hope the endoscopy/biopsies give you a definitive answer.

I do also have the bloating, gas, constipation, hair loss, an auto-splenectomy that no one can see any reason for and some elevated liver enzymes that don't seem to have a cause, I also have joint pain and some spinal compression fractures that have no explanation.  I am only 42 so haven't had a bone density test yet.  My calcium was normal, but my D was a little low.  They haven't checked for any other vitamin deficiencies yet.  My blood test for an autoimmue disorder was quite high but my Thyroid was all normal.

Hi, I have been having a lot of back pain and gut issues for 8 weeks or so.  I saw the GI on Monday and my results just came in from the lab.  Some of these number are high and off the little chart from the lab.  I am reading this correctly that I most likely have Celiac, right???  It would explain a lot of things for me.  She does have me scheduled for a colonoscopy and endoscopy in  2 weeks to do the biopsy.  I posted this prior, but forgot to put the range assuming they were all the same.  Someone advised me to repost with the ranges for some insight in the meantime. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 140 (normal) - Normal is 87-352 Deamidated Gliadin Abs, IgA 256 (High) - Moderate to strong positive at or above 30 Deamidated Gliadin Abs, IgG 65 (High) - Moderate to strong positive at or above 30 t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 31 (High) - Moderate to strong positive above 10 t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgG 10 (High) - Positive is at or above 10

Usually, the blood testing is done first and the endoscopy/biopsy follows for confirmation if there are positive antibody test scores. Historically, the endoscopy with biopsy has been considered to be the gold standard for diagnosing celiac disease. If the tTG-IGA scores are very high (5x-10x normal), some doctors will forego the endoscpoy/biopsy and grant a celiac disease diagnosis without it. So, if you are starting with the endoscopy/biopsy that may be all you need to arrive at a diagnosis. Another possibility would be for the GI doc to do a blood draw for antibody testing on the same day you come in for the endoscopy/biopsy.
