Ok, so I had an "I need this!!" attack yesterday and bought Cap'n Crunch. It looked mostly ok but I was wary of the oat flour. I've decided that I'm ok with oats so I thought I should be fine. I'm wondering if the lovely state of discomfort I'm in today is a result of the oat flour or if I should investigate the rest of the stuff I ate yesterday. I know that the cereal can't be considered gluten free since it's processing but I was curious about the ingredient itself. Thanks for the help :)

Sorry hun but Cap'n Crunch is not gluten free. Commercial oats are contaminated from the harvesting equipment and storage. Unless a product uses certified gluten free oats, it's not gluten free. Then there are the 10% of celiacs/gluten intolerent that can't even eat the pure certified gluten free oats. I am one of the one's that can't tolerate them. I get the same reactions as if I ate wheat, barley, or rye.

*sigh* I had a feeling :) So, all oats are considered non-gluten free? I thought that some people could handle commercial oats and some couldn't. I must have been thinking of the fact that some people can't handle "gluten free" oats. That's so much worse! lol Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it.

i have never tried gluten free oats yet -2 years into going gluten free. I have a bread recipe that calls for oat flour. Should I make sure I can tolerate oats before trying oat flour? Are all oat flours naturally gluten free? If I can toleratae oats is it safe to eat them every day? I used to eat oatmeal every morning- love it!

I finally tried gluten-free oatmeal when I had been gluten-free for 9 months. Seemed to do fine with it...and yes, I used to have it frequently for breakfast but don't want to push it yet by having it too often. I also had oatmeal a couple of times this week without a problem. I think you can pretty well assume oats are not safe unless they are specifically gluten-free. Regular oats are not safe due to cross-contamination.

Also, I do have a bread recipe to try that calls for oat flour. When I get around to it, I plan to grind some of my gluten-free oatmeal to make into flour as I don't want to buy yet another bag of flour.

Why don't you test it by having a bowl of oatmeal and see how you do. From what I've read 10 to 15% of celiacs can't handle oats (even the gluten-free variety).

I thought about it and did not want to chance being in pain on Mothers Day -i will buy them next week. Maybe I will be one of the lucky ones that can tolerate them. I have asked my GI about trying them and he said I am playing with fire but I know celiacs that eat them fine.

Good idea about not trying a new product right before a holiday! A major holiday for us mothers. Since you've been gluten-free for two years, it would be a good time to try them. Hopefully your GI is wrong. I bought mine in Oct. but didn't try it until Jan.

I've always like the old-fashioned oatmeal (not instant) so I bought Bob's Red Mill - the kind that takes 10 min. to cook. So far, so good, so I'm hoping you'll be able to have oatmeal again, too. I really did miss it.

If you are new to the diet you may want to wait until you are well healed before you try oats. When you do the best way to try is to have the item at least once a day for a week. It can take a while for a reaction to build up and you want to know for sure one way or the other.

smc said that she had been gluten-free for two years so I figured it was a good time to try them. For myself, I'm content to have oatmeal occasionally...don't think I'm brave enough to have it every day though.

I missed that. I agree if she/he has been gluten-free for that long then it would be time to try if oats are really missed.

      Celiac Emotional Healing Support Group
       
       
       
      Again you are invited to join Johnny Patout, LCSW for Baton Rouge's first emotional healing support group meeting to assist those living with celiac disease manage the emotional challenges so many of us face. Most often the emotional disturbances include depression, disinterest in normal activities, insomnia, grief, mood changes, anxiety, inability to concentrate, extreme concern about managing a gluten-free lifestyle and other emotional and behavioral challenges.
       
      The professionals at Jamestown Avenue Counseling Center created the emotional healing support group to give us a safe place to begin to process our emotions and support each other as we heal emotionally while managing celiac disease and the resulting autoimmune disorders.

    Well, TDZ, I certainly hope that your husband is able to get some Dapsone to quickly ameliorate his DH (and that it does not have too many adverse effects on him, either).  It sounds like your husband's DH is worse than mine ever was, so I can only imagine the ongoing agony that he's been dealing with.  To call DH "just an itch" would be like calling am amputation "just a scratch", i.e., probably nobody who has not experienced it can imagine how frustrating, distracting, maddening and depre
    Yeah, I think the only reason to bother with trying to get a diagnosis is if it's needed in order to get the Dapsone, which would be a lifesaver for him in stopping or helping the itching while he gets his diet more in order. He's had continuous rash and lesions and blisters over large to larger parts of his body for a couple of years, and the itching is driving him insane.  We do have an appointment with his PCP this afternoon, to try and talk him into trying the Dapsone -- seems it would
