What Blood Tests Do I Need To Determine If I Have Celiac?

Rate this topic

Are the tests subjective? (i.e. if my test come back with a certain result, I have Celiac, otherwise I do not).

The reason I ask is, I am going to ask my psychiatrist to order the tests instead of spending money to see an internal medicine doctor.

If the test are subjective, then my psychiatrist should be able to determine if I have Celiac.

What specific blood tests do I need?

I had my gastro dr take the initial round of blood tests which came back inconclusive. She then had to do a genetic blood test to look for the two genes that are found in celiac patients. This test only determines if you could possibly have celiac. It does not tell you definitively that you have it. My results were positive for the genes. To determine that I had it she did a small intestine biopsy. Again my results were positive.

If your results are negative you could still be sensitive to gluten. You can test that by eliminating gluten for two weeks to a month and then try adding it back in to see how you feel. Elimination is hard because almost everything processed has gluten. Google hidden gluten to find a list of ingredients to avoid.

For the blood tests to be accurate you have to keep eating gluten. I was already gluten free which was probably why my first results were inconclusive.

Sorry this was so long but I hope it helps!!!!

The full celiac panel (and I recommend that they do the full panel, not just pick and choose a test or two) is

Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgA

Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgG

Anti-Endomysial (EMA) IgA

Anti-Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA

Deamidated Gliadin Peptide (DGP) IgA and IgG

Total Serum IgA
