For those big rectangle looking thing's of cheese you get at any store, do you need to confirm them gluten free? or is it safe to assume they are ok? is cheese like that generally ever near anything gluten?

Do not fear The Cheese! He comes in peace!

The cheese should be fine. Are you wondering if the store cuts them & where? Our grocery does cut some fancy cheese into little pieces. The fancy cheese has its own counter area and place to cut it. You could ask your grocery about where its cut. I would think its a big job, so its done on a clean counter by itself & put away before anything wlse could crowd in?

Are you talking about prepackaged cheese or cheese that you have sliced on the big slicer in the deli? There is a small risk of cc if you buy the deli cheese and have them slice it for you. If the bakery and deli is manned by the same people, the workers could be handling bread or cakes prior to filling your order. Or the slicer could be cc'd by meat with gluten it (not very common but possible). I know several people on here have pre-arrangements with their deli to have their meat order filled first thing in the morning before anything else has been sold. That way the slicer is clean and any flour dust in the air from the bakery area has settled. In general, however, cheese is safe. If you think you are having trouble with cheese it is more likely that you have a casein or lactose intolerance.

ETA: If you live with gltuen eaters your cheese can be cc'd by them when they make themselves a sandwich. Get your own package of cheese just to be safe. ;)

I fear blocks of cheese, but more for the comfort of my cubicle-mate!

Okay, that was silly. I'll shut up now. But I'll first reiterate that you should always read the ingredients anyway. If it's got a list, read 'em.

Packaged cheese without anything added to it is without question gluten-free.

If it is sliced in a deli, there is a risk of cross contamination if the same slicer is used for meats, and any of those meats contain gluten (very, very few actually do).

I actually switched to blocks of cheese and shredding our own after using some on a pizza and my family raving about how it was the best pizza ever. I haven't bought pre-shredded stuff for anything since! I've experimented with a few local brands to find the ones we like best for things like pizza and tacos. Who knew it could make that huge of a difference in taste?!!?
