Son Had Blood Test Today

My 5 year old was having follow up skin prick tests done this morning. I am pretty sure I have celiac, but couldn't last a gluten challenge and have been wheat free 9 years, so no surprise when blood and biopsy came back negative.

My GI was broadly helpful, and I am waiting for results of genetic testing. I am 'officially' Non Celiac Gluten Intolerant cannot rule out celiac.

My big concern was getting my kids tested but GI said they don't do testing for asymptomatic 1st degree relatives. Ahhhggg. I told him my sons symptoms and he said that my son is symptomatic but my GP wasn't convinced.

So - I asked his allergy consultant, and after a short discussion during which she spoke to me as if I was 5 she agreed to do it. Yeay!!!!

I am so glad to read about the other parents here and how to get round the joys of the medical professionals.

I am a bit shaky and shocked to have got it done, I was ready for a massive fight. That was well worth a couple of minutes being patronized. It is a mixture of relief at getting it done and concern about results.

Oh, and he is still allergic to almonds, but not other nudts now, so still epipens and inhalers at the ready.

Thanks for listening

No one should have to be patronized in order to get proper medical testing -- so sad that many of us have experienced this -- it seems the pomposity rampant in the medical profession knows no boarders ;)

Happy to hear he was tested though. Great work Mom!

Cheers :)

Just the nail biting wait then. And then working out how to get my daughter with no symptoms tested.

I mentioned that one of my concerns was that in children it is often behavioral changes rather than GI and she said (in that special tone we all know and love) 'well if we tested everyone with behavioral issues...'. I wanted to shout IF YOU DID YOU MIGHT CATCH MORE CELIAC BEFORE IT DOES SO MUCH DAMAGE!!!

Today I am really cross with doctors with little clue and no manners.

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?

I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?

Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.
