Report On The Weekend W/all Those People

Mosaic asked about how my weekend with 10 guests went. We had a great time and the food issues worked out okay.Picture this scene:I'm unpacking a bag of bagles, peaches, and barbeque sauce one of the guests had brought. I pick up the barbeque sauce and look at the ingredients."Oh good, it's gluten free," I say. (It actually said that on the jar). Suddenly everyone stops what they are doing. "Oh," they say, "you're..." (then a pause and hush like the mention of cancer) . "Yes," I say. "I have Celiac Disease. I can't have wheat, rye, barley and oat.""Or gluten?" George asks."Gluten in wheat, rye, barley or oat." (I repeat what I had also emailed them before coming)"I have a friend who has that," George says. "Plus she's lactose intolerant. When we all go out to eat she just meets us later.""That's got to be tough," pipes in Cathy."Oh, that why Chester was so fanatic about cleaning the rack in the toaster oven after we used it this morning," Celene adds.Despite this, they still brought home cookies and cream ice cream from the store and assorted pies, but nobody asked to put their hamburger rolls on the grill! :)

I assume Chester is your husband? See, he is concerned about your gluten intake. He cleaned the toaster...fanatically! :D

Chester is the name of my uncle (mother's youngest brother) who was the first one diagnosed with celiac disease in our family.

I'm glad to hear that all went well for you and everyone ate happily.

Oh, one more thing. I just wanted to comment on the not eating oats thing. I know it is controversial in the celiac world, but my brother (who is very sensitive to gluten and has an immediate reaction) can eat oats with no reaction. Also, my MIL (who is no blood relation to my family and also very sensitive with an immediate reaction to gluten) can eat oats. I called Quaker and they told me that their oats are not processed on equipment that processes gluten containing foods. So...we eat oats.
