  1. Taco Bell?

    I seem to be a moron!! This is my second ridiculous post today. I should quit posting.... Anyway, for some reason I missed the whole Gluten column, where of course there is a check by Taco and Taco Supreme (DARN!). Also, down at the bottom, it says: Suggestions for Wheat and Gluten Sensitive Individuals - Tostada - Fiesta Taco Salad (order Chicken instead of Beef; order without the shell and without the Red Strips) - Express Taco Salad (order Chicken instead of Beef) - Zesty Chicken BORDER BOWL® (order without the Zesty Dressing and without the Red Strips) - Southwest Steak Bowl (order without the Creamy Jalapeno Sauce) So all my questions are answered. It was still updated 7/7/06 though!! Sorry for all the posts....
  2. Taco Bell?

    According to : http://www.yum.com/nutrition/allergen/allergen_tb.asp only the Steak bowl is listed as not containing wheat. So... 1) Do you think the Zesty Chicken Bowl only contains wheat because of those red strips? 2) Do we assume the jalapeno sauce doesn't contain wheat since the website doesn't specify it as the steak bowl without dressing? BTW, the site seems to have been updated 7/7/06. The Taco and Taco Supreme supposedly don't contain wheat...I guess they contain oats though? The Tostatda, Pintos and Cheese, and Mexican Rice are still Wheat Free. I think I'll send Taco Bell and email and see what's up...

  6. Thanks for all the replies! Does anyone have opinions on the different flavors of Kinnickinick bread? I agree that I doubt I'd try the deli, but they do seem to be an allergy friendly place. I plan on going for another salad and scoping it out. Carrie, I thought you were being a smarty pants when you said you liked your bread frozen! (Meaning you didn't like it at all, regardless of what you did with it.) Glad to know you like it toasted! Thanks again, Elaine
  7. Morning Sickness

    I felt nauseous 24 hours a day for the first trimester during my first two pregnancies. Now I"m pregnant with my third. I started getting nauseous again yet this time took the advice of a friend and had acupuncture done. It took two treatments, but since the second one I haven't felt one BIT of nausea. I don't know whether it is a coincidence or what, but I think it is worth a try. The first session I was nauseous when I laid on the table and she put a needle in each of my wrists (same point where you where those motion sickness bands). When she put the second needle in, I felt the nausea go completely away while I was lying there. Then when the session was over, I felt nauseous again when I stood up. The next morning though...no nausea! I felt good for a few days, then started feeling sick again. I went back for my second appointment and the same thing happened, but that next day I woke up and haven't felt sick since (and I'm now 11 weeks...that was around week 7 or 8). Anyway, I think it is definitely worth a try. The other thing that helped a tiny bit was real ginger ale (from a health food store). I like Santa Cruz Organic brand. Good luck, Elaine
  8. I bought some Kinnickinick Robin's Honey Brown Rice Bread the other day in the freezer section of Vitamin Cottage. I kept the bread in my freezer. My problem is figuring out how to get just two slices off this frozen block of bread without breaking the slices. Help! Also, I think this bread has a good flavor, but it has quite a chewy texture. Are all Kinnickinick breads like that? I made a sandwich today by toasting the bread, then spreading mayo on a slice, adding roast beef and shredded cheese, then putting it under my toaster oven's broiler for a minute or so to melt the cheese. Then I topped it off with the other slice with more mayo and yellow mustard. YUM!!!! It was the best sandwich I've had in a long, long time. Oh, one more bread related question....I met a woman the other night who took some rice bread with her to a deli and had them make her a sandwich on that. Ignoring for a second all the massive contamination issues this could cause, how would one go about heating the bread before making the sandwich? I wouldn't use their toaster obviously. Can you microwave the bread to soften it up? Thanks! Elaine

    So far I've had no problem at a McD's, except the one at the airport (which isn't big enough to have separate fryers). I ask the same way, questioning whether the fries are cooked with the nuggets. Elaine
  11. I'm Expecting!

    I'm pregnant with my third also and by far this has been the easiest pregnancy. I'm not sure whether it is b/c this is my first gluten-free pregnancy or if it is b/c I took progesterone supplements during the first two, or because I did acupuncture for a little nausea I had early on, but I've felt good, yet tired. I'll be so curious to see how breastfeeding goes with this one. I had horrible experiences with colicky kids the first two times. Both kids have fallen off the charts (by 9 mo and 6 mo. respectively). It will be interesting to see if this is a happy kid that gains weight with me not on gluten. Both my husband and I are gluten sensitive and carry DQ2/DQ1. When are you due? I'm due Oct. 9. Congratulations! Elaine
  12. Buffalo Wild Wings

    There's another wing place in Denver that I got excited about at first b/c they said they fried their wings in separate oil, but then I found out that they move their oil "down the line" at night, so the wing's oil was once upon a time "breaded item's" oil. I chanced it anyway and ate them and boy did I react! However, I did call Wing Stop today and they said that they only fry two items, wings and fries, and they fry them separately. Even if they didn't, they'd be safe. Plus the wings aren't floured. :-) Elaine in CO

    Hi Monica! That's great news about that Macaroni Grill. I wonder if the one in Cherry Creek would be as friendly? Where is the one in Aurora? What's the manager's name? I read a little bit about your restaurant idea in another post. I'd think that it would be great to have a really "fresh" restaurant, sort of like Souper Salad, that focused on fresh organic salads, soups, and sandwiches. Personally, as much as I'd LOVE to have a fully gluten-free restaurant in Denver, I don't know that that focus would work. Instead, I'd only provide fresh gluten-free bread (and don't name it gluten-free, just call it Marvelous Millet bread or Savory Sorghum, etc. with a designation that it is gluten-free next to it), then offer whole wheat bread that you buy from another bakery. Have separate handling areas for gluten-free and non-gluten-free sandwiches. Your desserts could all be easily gluten-free and your pizza too. I'd just make sure the focus are fresh foods that are naturally gluten-free. (Oh, and baked potatoes!) I think if the only gluten-filled items were sandwiches made in a separate area on bread not baked in your store, all gluten-free people would feel very comfortable. Plus you wouldn't alienate those that don't like things "different." Don't do vegan though!! I want a smoked turkey and cheese (hot) on fresh gluten-free bread. :-) BTW, there is a GREAT sandwich place in Dallas/Fort Worth called The Great Outdoors. They have "the works" that they put on their sandwiches, which is lettuce, tomatoes, red onion, parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, oregano, olive oil, and red wine vinegar. It's SO GOOD!   14. Mexican Restaurants

    There are quite a few things to be concerned with as far as Mexican food is concerned. Many, many restaurants use soy sauce in their marinade for fajitas, carne asada, regular chicken dishes, etc. Be sure to ask the manager. Also, for enchiladas, many restaurants dip their tortillas into oil, the same oil used to fry breaded/flour items. This helps soften the corn tortillas. You have to ask that the tortillas not be dipped, which does make them a little tougher, unless they add extra sauce. Ask about the fried items, like chips and taco shells. You want to make sure they are either fried off site (in which case I think they'd most likely be safe, but still a risk) or if they're fried in the same oil as flour tortillas and other breaded items (and therefore not safe). I love Mexican food! The best place place for quick gluten-free Mexican food is Taco Cabana. They have a great gluten-free menu (online I think). Unfortunately they don't have them in Colorado.
