  1. I know this is an old post, but I'm glad I found it! Had a few sips of my husbands Nesquik last night, woke up feeling awful with joint pain and have spent most of the day in the bathroom. That explains it! I'm always very careful because both my son and I are extremely sensitive to any gluten content. Thanks for the info!
  2. I get swollen painful lymph nodes, in my underarms, as does a friend of mine, who also suffer with Celiac. I have noticed they only seem to swell up when I have either vinegar, or grain alcohols. But, I don't seem to have that symptom from other glutening incidents. Was wondering if anyone out there has had that experience? If it has something to do with distilled grains? I tried to do some research about it as to why, but didn't come up with anything? If I have anything containing vinegar I get the typical gluten symptoms, rash, nausea, dizziness, headache, stomach pain, fatigue, etc..etc.....but then also this?! Anybody else?

  4. HI there, I am looking for anyone who can direct me to a good doctor in Nelson, British Columbia, Canada, who takes us seriously. I will just give you a rundown of my experience: Last year my family and I came back from 3 months in Central America. I was very sick. My dr. had me on all kinds of antibiotics, anti malarials, etc. After recovering, I got really sick again and just never got better, it's been about a year and a half now. I knew I was wheat intolerant, as I've been off of wheat for years, as has my father and my sister, but didn't know about gluten. I was so sick, all I was eating was brown rice and chicken broth. Then I broke out in a horrible blistery rash. I thought I was having an allergic reaction, and then I read the label on the broth, "wheat gluten." I told my dr. about all my symptoms, diarrhea, nausea, vomitting, rash, pain in my colon, to name a few. I suggested celiac, and how my symptoms come after I eat gluten and can last for days, and he told me it was likely just irritable bowel and gave me a pamphlet. He did send me for a blood test. When I came back for the results, I had a fill in, my doctor was on holidays. The tests were negative. I asked her if it could be because I've been off wheat for so long, and she said maybe. But, did refer me to a gastroenterologist. The gastroenterologist, acknowledged that I was most likely gluten intolerant, but would not agree with celiac, because I'm not skinny. He did do a scope to appease me, but didn't take a biopsy! And then told me it's just irritable bowel, reduce your stress and be careful what you eat. I have some friends who tell me I just need to drink more water, or try accupuncture it helped their tummy troubles. Or that they get indigestion too. When I try to explain, they just say, "oh, did you get the doctor's confirmation on that?" I would just like to find a doctor who will listen without having to go back on gluten. Is that possible? I've already lost 20 pounds being gluten free, and I don't want to go back to being that sick again! Thank you for reading. It's really nice to have a place where people truly understand.   5. Gluten Friendly Restaurants Canada

    My sister took me to A Tasty Menu last month when I was visiting. It was soooo exciting to be able to order anything from the menu. My family were happy to try something new and thought the food was great. I bought some of the pizza pockets to take home with me to B.C. They are really good. The spinach, feta, and olive ones, mmmmmm. If we are ever in Cochrane, I will definitely check out the patisserie. Thanks for the reply.
  6. I just wanted to post this because my family and I just got back from a trip through the Okanagan in British Columbia. We ate at 4 different restaurants and had wonderful experiences at 3 of them. The first evening we ate at Moxie's. It says right on the menu to inform you server if you have any allergies or dietary restrictions. I picked out what I thought I could have, with slight alterations. The server said she would inquire of the kitchen. The manager came over and assured me it would be fine. They were very pleasant. A great experience. The next afternoon we ate at Earl's restaurant in Vernon, they were very accomodating. I informed the waitress of my Celiac (gluten allergy in her terms). She was well-informed and knew immediately what I could have. She informed the kitchen staff and they brought my order out seperate. No embarrassment, nothing, she didn't even skip a beat! It was wonderful. Friday night was not so good. We ate at Mino's in Kamloops. The server we had was absolutely insulted that I would dare ask for my Greek salad with no dressing. She snapped at me for asking to have a salad specially prepared for myself. When I asked for something different, she gave me the lecture again. She finally stormed off to return when we had made up our minds. I will first say that I am by nature a very shy, undemanding person. When she came back my uncle asked what the souvlaki was marinated in. She again was extremely annoyed and irritated. I finally just ordered it, and of course, was VERY sick the rest of the evening and most of the next day. She would not acknowledge me for the rest of our meal. I was in tears by the end of dinner. We would have walked out but my uncle was treating us and I didn't want to make a scene. It was a horrible experience! The next evening I was nervous to go out after having had such an awful experience. We went to Montana's. I nervously mentioned to the server that I had a gluten allergy. She quickly got the allergy menu. We were a very large group of over 20 with 3 of us with different allergies. She was so kind and helpful. Brought us each our own menu. It was great. I will definitely go there again! I sent thank yous to all 3 restaurants because I know that all of us really appreciate the consideration.
  7. Thanks for the info, gluten intolerance vs. celica, I really appreciate it. As for the grains, I've tried Spelt, Kamut, barley, rye, Oat flour etc...and they all give me the same symptoms. I am lactose intolerant and haven't had dairy in a very long time. I had to cut out Soy milk because it made me very sick as well. So...my diet is quite restrictive, gluten free, dairy free, soy free.....But, still have chronic pain. I am going for a colonoscopy in May, which I'm hoping will tell me something, at least I'll know where to go from there. Thanks again and hope you are all doing well.....take care!
  8. I am 33 years old and am gluten intolerant. I had been eating relatively gluten free for some time, and my blood test came back negative for celiac. I asked my doctor if my eating gluten free could have altered the results and she said yes. I requested a referral to a gastroenterologist because I have had chronic pain in my colon for 8 years. I've tried to get help for it, but because I don't have dramatic weight loss, the doctors don't believe it's anything but irritable bowel. I even had one doctor tell me I just had weak stomach muscles and needed to exercise more! The specialist said that I definitely have a gluten intolerance and to stay away from gluten, but that I don't have celiac because of not having the weight loss. Does that make any sense? Is there a difference between gluten intolerance and celiac? I apologize for my ignorance, I've just been frustrated for a long time. When I do eat wheat I get bloated, cramps, diarrhea, sometimes a skin rash. It seems I'm allergic to almost everything under the sun. And I've been getting flu like symptoms that last for about 2 days at a time. When my doctor told me that it was irritable bowel and not celiac, I went back to eating wheat. The pain in my colon has become so intense that I can't sleep at night. When I cut out wheat it's not as bad, but the pain never goes away. Does anyone have any insight? I would really appreciate it!
