  1. Allergy Medicine Help

    I like me some Allegra but I only take it in the daytime if things are really bad. It is the least sleepy-feeling for me. even claritin makes me drowsy. At nighttime, and here is my current dilemma, I take generic benadryls. but I took two last night and could barely wake up this morning! ok, shouldn't do that but I checked the ingredients list just in case and they are Sam's CLub "Member's Mark Allergy Tablets" and they contain "starch". that's it. Do I know if that is corn or wheat or potato or just a who-knows-what blend? Nasal sprays - I also recommend the plain old saline solution. You can make your own really easily any time you run out - sea salt non-iodized and a little baking soda. google for the recipe. I used to use Nasalcrom, a steroid. I think long term use of that did not help me. Acoording to the Walgreens list posted here: http://www.glutenfreedrugs.com/ the Walgreens house brand is gluten-free but there's no Walgreen's near me. Any ideas for obtaining gluten-free diphenhydramine hydrochloride?
  2. I glutened myself on purpose. I had been gluten-free for months through the winter. Then just this spring I was aiming to eat gluten long enough to get bloodtests but I couldn't hack the gluten-challenge I got so sick. All the stomach pain and diarrhea and acid reflux and trouble breathing and fatigue and pain! My son has the definitive diagnosis and one sister is self-diagnosed, as they say. When I first went gluten-free it took a few months for all the symptoms to go away and to get the hang of not-accidentally glutening myself. Even after a couple months for example I would still occasionally grab a handful of chex mix and down it, totally forgetting there would be Wheat Chex in it! Or I remember popping a chicken nugget in my mouth and eating it and then realizing what I'd done.
  3. I can remember having this off and on in my life. Most recently when I tried a gluten-challenge to see if I could get tested I developed the problem again: difficult to get a deep breath or feel like I'm getting enough breath. I had read that it had something to do with anemia, either the iron, B-12 or folic acid levels we have, right? I have been gluten-free again for a week and the SOB is fading, having less of it each day.

Flaxseed imho is funny tasting and has too many phytoestrogens, I notice the effect even if it is subtle. I use walnut oil for cooking and dressings so I often have some for oil pulling. I also like sunflower and untoasted sesame oil for cooking and pulling. Pumpkin seed, hemp seed and macadamia nut oils I have seen mentioned too. I'm not a fan of olive oil but some people like it, ditto for coconut oil - not my cuppa. Canola is not for oil pulling nor are corn, soy or peanut oils. Part of the concern with those is that they are often chemically or heat refined. Cold pressed unrefined is usually recommended.
  5. Sure, but cigars don't contain salivary enzymes to start breaking down food: "α-amylase (EC3.2.1.1). Amylase starts the digestion of starch and lipase fat before the food is even swallowed. It has a pH optima of 7.4" So I'm no expert but shouldn't this make some of those fatty acids more available? and trace amounts of Vitamins A and E and other bits in the oils? But I really understand skepticism and I don't want to overstate it. It did a lot for me and so I am looking for the "how". I really had nothing to lose when I heard about it. Truly. I was skeptical but Dr.s had done _nothing_ for me for years. I thought, "maybe oil pulling total quackery but maybe it does something that the fanatics can't put a name on so they just call it a "detoxifier"" I still think that "detoxing" is sort of thrown out there as a catch all phrase without much solid meaning... but I know that oil pulling works, however it does it. plus oleic acid, such as in sunflower and sesame seed oils which are recommended, is a penetration enhancer for dermal application of meds and is one of many researched as an enhancer for sublingual meds. It's not dismissed by researchers so why should we? It may not be that oils must be made hydrophilic before something happens.
  6. Gluten Free Probiotic

    Bump! I'm looking for a gluten-free probiotic also. NOW foods uses Barley Grass and oat grass. I don't see a guarantee of gluten-freedom there. My old probiotic used to give me a bit of stomach pain and after I learned more about celiac, I noticed it also uses Barley Grass - that's Garden of Life brand. So I am still looking. I googled and found a few non-name-brands - does anyone have any feedback on some of them? THX!
  7. Celiac With Fever

    I've been running a fever for 7 days on a gluten-challenge. When I was gluten-free, I could tell I had been glutened by my fever: 99.1 to 101.1 F In the past when Drs have checked me, my white blood cell count is high but my RA which runs in family is neg. Never been checked for celiac even when I had chronic diarrhea.
  8. Nadia - I am familiar with oil pulling. While I know there is clinical data showing it reduces amounts of plaque buildup - great for oral health - there is no other evidence (except anecdotal...) of it doing anything else. Hey, if you can buy a bottle of good cooking oil and use it as mouthwash every morning and feel better, what big pharma company is going to pay to research that unless they can genetically engineer some seed to produce a better oil-pulling oil? This being said, I tried it and it did so many wonderful things for my health I am not skeptical about its benefit. Doing oil pulling was sort of the beginning of the road to me finding out more about celiac. I was thinking, "this is weird. why would mouthwashing with some oil in the morning ease my sinuses and joints and help my skin? why?" my unprofessional opinion is that I was not absorbing fats properly - celiacs often don't, right? Soaking oil in your mouth for 20 minutes gives your body the opportunity to soak up some of the oil via sublingual or buccal (cheek) tissue. Sublingual delivery is used for meds all the time, why not fatty acids? the oil pulling was so good I started taking omega-3s and that was beneficial to me too. So all this is to say that, imho, if oil pulling does a whole lot of good for a person, they may want to look into why; like maybe they aren't getting all the fatty acids they should out of their diet. Villous atrophy perhaps?
  9. High Fever After Being Glutened?

    I know this an old thread but I want to add my experience for when others coming looking. I get fevers when glutened. 99.2 F up to spikes of 100.3. I don't know how long they run. One time was 4 days before I figured out what I was eating that had wheat in it. As of may 8, 2009, I am on day 5 of fevers in 6 days of a gluten challenge. and boy am I eating gluten - 3 xs a day At least I now know what it is and I don't think to myself. "oh I need to rest, I'm running a fever," and therefore my life doesn't completely fall apart. I can keep taking care of my son and house and life...
  10. Hi celiac.com community, My 7yo son recently had bloodwork and had a 185 tTg. He will have his biopsy next. I had been trying to be gluten-free for several months, 8 or 9, though i know I was glutened a few times. One way I knew was I would start running a fever, 99.1 to 100.1 (my usual temp runs low, about 97.6 or 97.8.) but now I am doing the gluten-challenge so that I can have the bloodwork and biopsy done. Though I am physically uncomfortable in many ways and running a fever too, I'm quite determined to do my gluten challenge. I think it's important for long term care, to check for osteo- problems (I'm 45), and general info in case I need other med care in the future. I'm also sick of Drs disregarding my complaints... (I also think if one gets positive bloodwork or responds positively to gluten-free diet, there should be no need for a biopsy to obtain a proper dx from a Dr. It's my humble opinion that keeping someone on gluten when they have high other indicators is a barbaric, unconscionable and moronic way to approach medicine considering the dangers of continued gluten ingestion and the cutting edge research on neurological effects, etc...) I am looking for some stories where people had positive blood work and/or positive biopsies after a gluten-challenge and how long it took them. I know this will vary for everyone but I just could really use some "light at the end of the tunnel" stories. Also, any dittos on the fever would be interesting to hear about to. When Docs have checked me out about this before they usually check my white blood cell count and it's high. Then they check me for rheumatoid arthritis as it is in my genetic line and that has been negative over the last 3 decades. Thanks for reading - slackermom

  12. I can imagine it would be a very hard decision in your case. I am doing the gluten-challeneg but had only been gluten free for a couple of months. I don't get completely laid out in bed - well, rarely - from my reaction to gluten. I am doing it for long-term care, as in, if any other conditions or issues come up as I age (I'm 45), I do not want Dr's continuing to tell me that it's just in my head. They better damn well know that I have been dx's according to their standard (that I think is barbaric in its way - I have to make myself sick, DO HARM, in order for them to say, "ok, the gluten is doing you harm, now stop eating it...") so that they treat me accordingly. Also, if I end up in hospital or nursing home or any other manner of institution. I also wish to become an official celiac statistic. Since it is so badly dx'd and even when I have been having more obvious symptoms, doctors were blowing me off, I want it _known_ to the world that by the apathy in the medical world they have been doing more harm than good for about, what, 2.7 million of us in the US? ok, getting off my soapbox now...
