  1. Thank you for posting this! I couldn't understand why my DH seems to flare up with corn (which I am allergic to, but is in a medication I need to take occasionally) and some other gluten-free foods that I'm allergic to.
  2. I developed DH almost a year ago from unknowingly using a hand soap that contained "wheat protein". I must've been ingesting tiny amounts by eating food with my hands and stuff like that, because the DH was/is on my face. Once I realized what was going on (about 6 months ago), I stopped using the soap and I cut out all high-iodine foods from my diet (which were iodized salt/sea salt and cod liver oil). The DH has cleared up about 90%. There's some marks left that will probably take ages to go away, if they ever will. But... if I eat anything with a moderate or high amount of iodine, it flares up. I am worried about my thyroid... I already have a ton of health problems... So just wondering if anyone has succesfully increased their iodine intake without the DH returning? How long did you limit iodine? Thanks.
  3. For info on the oxalate content of foods, it's best to join the Yahoo group called Trying_Low_Oxalates. They have tested a lot of foods and have a spreadsheet in their files. I think all nuts are high oxalate. I think sunflower and pumpkin seeds are medium or low? The fact that green beans cause you insomnia makes me think sulfur intolerance. If I were you I would try a sulfur exclusion diet first (see my previous post). Blueberries are both low sulfur and I think low oxalate so I'm not sure about that... I started the LOD about 3 months ago, I think, and just over the past 2 or 3 weeks I have noticed a reduction in my food allergies. I have "true" food allergies though, which cause throat irritation, hives, sneezing, etc... so I'm not sure if this diet would help you with your particular issues... although I'm guessing that anyone with leaky gut would do well to limit oxalates. By the way, you can't cut out oxalates completely because they are in basically all non-animal foods. The point is just to minimize them.
  4. The main reason I asked is that I was wondering whether to bring up a potential sulfur intolerance. Mercury toxicity often causes a sulfur intolerance, and common symptoms are fatigue, insomnia, depression, brain fog, etc. I have this myself. Read here: http://livingnetwork.co.za/chelationnetwork/food/high-sulfur-sulphur-food-list/ If you do have a sulfur intolerance, limiting or eliminating those foods should help you feel MUCH better, even if you can't ever get your fillings out. Hope that helps.

Well, that's a lot to eliminate all at once, but I guess on that diet you could eat... chicken, beef, lamb (preferably organic or hormone/antibiotic-free) white rice (may not be the best for a yeast overgrowth, but... one step at a time) celery, iceberg lettuce possibly goat milk products (yogurt, butter, cheese) This is very limited, but you could start with something like this, then add back one group of foods at a time (such as higher salicylate vegetables) to see if they are problematic for you. This is assuming you would start to feel better on the limited diet. Do you by any chance have silver (mercury) fillings in your teeth?
  6. Oh, one more thing. Some people think that oxalic acid/oxalates in the diet can cause or contribute to leaky gut. I have been doing the Low Oxalate Diet for a few months now, and I think that is one reason my food allergies are becoming less severe. See http://lowoxalate.info/index.html
  7. I know how you feel. I was/am in a similar situation but am starting to get better now... You likely have intestinal dysbiosis (imbalanced flora)... I'd recommend getting a stool test for bacteria, yeast, and parasites (such as the (Company Name Removed - They Spammed This Forum and are Banned) Microbial Ecology stool test, available at www.directlabs.com). Treating the imbalances in your gut flora should help heal leaky gut and reduce your reactions to foods. Once your gut is in better shape, you might benefit from some type of allergy treatment. There's NAET (www.naet.com), which is like acupuncture without needles. And there's something called Low Dose Allergen therapy, or LDA, which is shots. I had some success with NAET, but will be starting LDA soon -- it seems to have a higher success rate.
  8. Thank you all for sharing your experiences. I believe I have become pretty sensitive to small amounts of gluten (for example, I developed dermatitis herpetiformis on my face when I started using a hand soap containing hydrolyzed wheat protein). I used to get cramps and diarrhea from ingesting gluten, but now I only get constipation, which makes it harder to know if I've been glutened (I think sometimes I have C for reasons other than being glutened). But I have chronic health problems that have gotten worse and worse since being gluten-free, and I suspect that small exposures to gluten are contributing. I think I need to live in a gluten-free house, so I'm going to try to find a way to make that happen.

  10. How many people here think they've been glutened by touching door/fridge/cabinet handles, taps, remote controls, etc. that were touched by people who ate gluten foods? (and then touching your face/mouth/nose) I'm being super careful about not letting my foods get contaminated, not eating any processed foods, etc... but this is the one thing I wonder about. I live in a mixed household and there isn't really any way I can move out or make the house gluten free. I wonder if I am getting glutened from touching surfaces with gluten on them... but it's so hard to know because my celiac symptoms are not overt. Is it possible to not get glutened in a mixed household if I wash my hands a lot and don't touch my face/mouth/nose?
  11. So, since I stopped using those products with wheat protein, and basically cut iodine out of my diet (cut out sea/pink salt and CLO), this rash has improved drastically! It wasn't itchy at all for at least a few days. But then yesterday, I had some CLO, and it was itchy again last night. How long does it generally take for the itchiness to go away if one avoids both gluten and iodine? I'm wondering if the itchiness means that I definitely ingested some iodine (or gluten... I'm careful, but I do live in a non-gluten-free household...), or if it could still remain itchy for awhile even if avoiding these. It does seem like CLO contains some iodine, from what I've read, so I think it was probably that...

  13. I might just cut it out for a little while, in hopes of clearing up this rash as fast as possible. I just realized I may be getting more iodine than I thought... I use a LOT of himalayan salt and sea salt. I'm reading here that these are problematic for some. I'm so glad I came to this forum and read about the iodine connection -- I never knew about this before today!
  14. Hi all, I'm suspecting I have DH -- not sure yet. I have been gluten-free for a few years, but just realized that I was using a couple products (shampoo, hand soap) that contain wheat protein, so I wonder if this triggered DH. (I never had DH, or whatever this rash is, until recently.) I stopped using these products yesterday, and I think my rash is already improving. Anyway, my diet is already very low in iodine, but the one thing I'm wondering about is cod liver oil. I can't find a definite answer elsewhere about the iodine content of cod liver oil, so I'm wondering about your experiences... Does anyone here who has to avoid iodine know if they can take cod liver oil or not? I hope I don't have to cut cod liver oil out, because I really need the omega 3s. (I can't get omega 3s from other sources due to my numerous food allergies.) Thanks! LC.
  15. Okay, here's what I'm trying to say... I am on a gluten-free diet, BUT I eat wheat-free oats, which do bother SOME people with celiac disease. So if the oats are bothering me, then the test could show something, right? If it's positive, that probably means the oats are not okay for me, and if it's negative, that probably means they are okay for me. Am I wrong in thinking that? I already know that I react severely to gluten, so I don't really need a test to tell me that. I just want to make sure the oats aren't bothering me. Yeah, I understand where he's coming from too, but I'm not most people! I have tons of other food allergies too, so I prepare ALL my own food. And I rarely even eat things that come in packages... I just eat whole foods that are naturally gluten-free.
