  1. Hello Folks!! To Suzn - Definately eating 4-5 or even 6 small meal/day could be the answer for most of us. I am a personal trainer and what I try to teach my clients is that they should schedule their meals so that they keep their blood sugar levels - level. This means they should have a small amount of protein(about 20% of the meal) and some complex or low glycemic index carbohydrate(about 80% of the meal)at each meal and they should spread these small meals out over 3 hour stretches. When you maintain your blood sugar in this way you should not get hungry. Of course, this must be done differently if you have chosen the Atkins diet but it is still very doable. To Welda - weight gain occurs when your caloric expenditure exceeds your caloric intake . However, you are right - if you keep your caloric intake low, your body sets itself up into "survival mode" and your caloric requirements, over time, actually decrease. This doesn't mean you can eat everything ALL the time !!! It just means that you need to have some days where you take in more calories than other days(just to keep your body guessing!). When you have a higher calorie day you should also have a higher exercise day . To everybody - I really think that there is something to our "hunger- nourishment requirement" especially when we are still healing. I remember when my kids were young. When they hadn't had much in the way of vegetables for a day or two in one afternoon they would deplete a hugh tray of mixed raw veges - and then they might not touch these for another couple of days - no matter how well I would dress them up!! So if you are really hungry - try to eat a lot of nutrient rich foods and just picture your happy cells healing and rebuilding!!   2. My intestines rumble often also - my naturopath thinks I have a candida problem. Has anyone else had this suggestion made to them? If you think the celiac disease diet can be rough you should try the B.E.Diet(Body Ecology Diet) This is a very strict diet designed to rid the body of harmful yeast. Most traditional doctors will find this idea laughable but ALL of my symptoms disappear when I am on the B.E.D. However, my will power fails after a few months and the rumbling returns when I add my dark chocolate and Apricot Biscuits back into my diet. Feel Well and God Bless . Su
  3. What Is Normal Now?

    To - seeking wholeness Thanks for the advice. I haven't really stuck to the gluten-free diet very well - denial I think. So about once a month when I go out to breakfast I usually order slices of the homemade bread, etc. Also, over the holidays I went off my diet big time - denial again. Up until recently I was not that badly affected. But now I am sticking to the diet 100% and I will for several months. Generally I minimize dairy but I will follow your suggestion and drop it completely. I'm pretty good at baking for myself and I have come up with some pretty good recipes. As long as I make sure that the pantry is full of gluten-free foods I will do fine. I lead a pretty active life(I'm a personal trainer) so I'm hungry often. Does anybody have any suggestions for good energy/protein bars - either store bought or recipes - I would love some ideas. Feel well!!! Su J
  4. What Is Normal Now?

    Hi - I, too, wonder "what is normal now?" I'm new to the message board but not so new to celiac disease. My mom was diagnosed in the late 70's - what a tough time she had. No one knew ANYTHING about gluten - and there were very few gluten free products... and I'm sure we(my family) were not very supportive. Now I have a quasi-diagnosis. My blood tests - EGA was positive - and my biopsy was" suggestive of sprue" but at the time I had had a severe reaction to some rheumatoid arthritis drugs that had destroyed my epithelial tissue both outside(my face was all blisters) and in(wicked diarrhea). I went off my gluten-free diet over Christmas and actually had very few symptoms but now yikes NOW my digestive tract is going haywire... I, too, wonder what is normal in the way of bowel movements I ALWAYS have diarrhea - whether I am gluten-free or not. How long do I have to be gluten-free before the diarrhea stops!!? Also, I have no bloating and no dermatitis. November was fun for me. I had surgery and needed to take Vicadan(sp?) for the pain. Since these narcotics are constipating I had very normal bowel movements... it was GLORIOUS!! Well I am babbling - but I would like to know - does anyone become diarrhea free when they are gluten free - or am I stuck with this forever. Can anyone relate? Well, thanks for listening.
