  1. Hi gang, It's been a while since I've been on here! Hope you all are doing well. My girlfriend and I (both of us are gluten-free) are travelling to a wedding next month in Cicero, NY - North Syracuse area. Most of our meals will be taken care of, but we're still going to need dinner one night, and maybe some other stuff along the way. Any suggestions as to where we may be able to go for a good meal? Thanks guys!
  2. Thanks gang! I appreciate the advice, and knowing that some of you have been through the same. I have gave her a book a few months ago, and have given her all kinds of resources, which she has not really done much of anything with. I think that's the aggravating part. She seems a bit better since I blew up, and after I explained a few days later this isn't something I think about occasionally. I think now that she realizes that I (we) always have this on our mind, she's a bit more empathetic. I think she will probably stop offering me things I can't eat now, too. (There were a few times she responded "I know you can't eat that, I just wanted to be polite." Sigh...need to be patient...) I guess that's the key word, is patience. I guess the good news is that my mom is driving my sister nuts righ now, too. So it isn't just me!
  3. Sorry gang, I need to vent a bit here... My mom seems to only understand what gluten free means if I walk her through every single step. She wanted to make a meatloaf the other week, which she did fine with - no CC issues at all! She's sometimes really good, sometimes really not good. Over the last 4 weeks, she wanted to send cake home with me after Thanksgiving dinner, asked me if I wanted a piece of pie, and offered me a cheese sandwich today, none of it gluten-free. Today I made a mistake and just went off. I felt bad and apologized to her. Mind you, I gave her Living Gluten Free for Dummies to read 5 MONTHS AGO! She still hasn't read it. That was part of why I got so upset today. On top of this being my first gluten-free Christmas, it's been a few mentally and emotionally tough days. Please tell me she is going to catch on that when she keeps offering me food I can't eat, it's like poking me over and over in the shoulder. And that I'm going to learn how to deal with it better. Gaaaah!
  4. Despite the fact that I'm over 30, I think I'm eating like a teenage boy again. Now that said, I do still count my morning snack (included here) as breakfast.   5. Hey gang, My mom was so excited to make a meatloaf for me earlier this week. It is her signature dinner fiod! Until she started to actually make it ... apparantely she used half a bag of glutino bread crumbs, and was still having problems shaping the meatloaf. It tasted just fine, but definitely fell apart fairly easily. Any tips on how to hold a gluten free meatloaf together? Thanks guys! And everyone have a safe and happy Christmas!

    Agree with Skylark. I'd stay away from it. Personally, now that there's a Qdoba AND Chipotle within 10 minutes of me, Taco Bell just does not appeal to me any more.
  8. I have been eating like a horse lately! Now I'm in the Northeast U.S. (Philadelphia), so I imagine the temperature dropping may have something to do with it. My body may be telling me I need more insulation!
  9. Hey Triple, I'm with you on the meds! I don't take much to begin with anyway, and am trying to take less even now. Basically, I just take a multi vitamin, and that's about it. I've read a LOT of people use Nature Made for vitamins. After doing a little reading on here, even though I know it's cheaper, I'm going to try to avoid the mail order. Only because I don't know how they handle it, what they're handling before, what brand they're going to give me...for me personally, it's a lot of unknowns. For some people, they're ok with that. Some are not. I'd rather be able to give specific instructions face to face at the pharmacy. I have used the CVS generic omeprazole OTC with no problems, and their consumer help line was very kind and helpful. (Also, have you thought about trying to wean yourself off it? Unless I've been glutened, my reflux is virtually gone! It was obviously a symptom of the intolerance. Might be worth asking your doc) They also said they are working on gluten free labeling. I'm learning that sometimes, it's just trial and error, and it can look like something completely random when you do get hit. But hang in there! Write down everything that causes a reaction - even if you don't know why and it seems like it shouldn't bother you - so you know to research it or avoid it in the future. Welcome to the club!   10. So you can see from my pic I'm a guitar player. Though I'm not playing it in the pic, my favorite guitar to play is my Gibson Les Paul (2003 Standard, slim 60's neck, Cherry Burst finish, for the fellow guitar players who want to geek out with me. ) Goof was my nickname in school. It started when I wore a Disney Goofy hat to "Crazy hat day" as a freshman in marching band. The instructor didn't know my name yet, so he started calling me Goof. It stuck, and whenever I would walk into a party after that, I would be greeted by "Gooooooooof" Ah, the good old days...
  11. You said they did a blood test. Have you had an upper endoscopy done, to rule out anything else? I would give your doctor a call. Sometimes the blood can mean something like an ulcer, which is easily treatable.
  12. I am gluten sensitive (biopsy negative). Give it some time, and I can assure you that if it is gluten, you WILL know. For me, it was only a few weeks, but for others it can be longer. My energy level went through the roof, the "brain fog" went away, and I felt better than I had in years! So be patient! And be as strict as you can about kicking the gluten out of your diet, as it will make your "results" that much more clear (yes or no). And if it is gluten, you will just feel that much better!
  13. I say why not?? If there's a hole in the market for this kind of book, and it's something you are passionate about, do it!!! You can't go wrong with doing something you have a passion to do.
  14. As I was thinking about this, I would actually try a few changes to your diet first...I find drinking decaf helps A LOT. Caffeine can be pretty bad for reflux. Add some honey to the decaf tea, too. That's what singers will do when they're sick or have voice issues becasue it coats and soothes the throat. And it's tasty! Switch to decaf or herbal tea (herbal teas with cinnamon will be good for your digestion too. just check the gluten status first! most are gluten-free, but not 100% I think tazo has a good cinnamon tea) Lots of water helps, too, as well as Apple Juice (helps to neutralize the excess acid) Try to moderate your chocolate intake (at least for a week or two!), and if you can avoid soda, that will be helpful too. Also, check how much acidic foods and drinks you consume...OJ, tomatoes, etc, and see if you can limit those. If you smoke, that can aggrivate it as well. The idea is for your stomach produce less acid, which gives your lower esophogeal sphincter (the part that keeps stomach acid in your stomach) time to heal. Hopefully, this will do the trick for you and save you a trip to the doc, time, and money! I think most doctors would recommend an acid reducer, like Prilosec, if they think it is acid reflux after diet changes don't work. If that helps, that's your answer! Most people I know that have taken it just take for a few weeks, maybe a month or two, and then work off it. (under doctor supervision!). I have a friend who keeps it on hand for occasional use, in case he goes out to eat somewhere he knows will bother his reflux, but doesn't take it most of the time. But I don't think most docs will put you through expensive and intrusive tests if they don't have to. What I did was try Zegerid OTC and Prilosec after the diet changes. Mind you, this is before I went gluten free. And it worked pretty well, at first. If you try this, don't use it for more than 2 weeks without talking to your doctor. Usually if it works in that time frame, that's your answer! If you want to talk to your doctor, I'm sure that'd be fine. You can get a generic version at Wal-Mart over the counter pretty cheap, and it's gluten free from what I've read. (Just check on that first!) The idea behind it is that it reduces the acid in your stomach, which thereby gives the lower esophogeal sphincter time to heal. The reason it did not work for me long term was that it was the gluten causing the reflux, NOT the other things. Getting rid of gluten is what ultimately got rid of it for me. It wasn't immediate, but it wasn't a terribly long time either (maybe 2 months?). I'll still get reflux if I get glutened somewhere along the way.
