  1. I have a question about hydrolyzed vegetable protein in hair products. I’ve been using Redken All Soft conditioner for a long time, assuming it’s safe. I have long hair so I want to use gluten-free products because my hair gets in my mouth sometimes. But recently I read that hydrolyzed vegetable protein can come from wheat and that it should be avoided - a...
  2. Well, they aren’t permanent. They’re semi-permanent and you have to have them done every couple weeks because they are glued to each lash and they fall off with your natural lashes. They take about an hour to do each time you have them filled, but your first appointment takes at least two hours. It’s really relaxing to do them and you don’t have to fuss wi...
  3. I like the vita fusion gummies. I’ve called them and they said that their vitamins are gluten free and they are made in a gluten free facility.
  4. I have a question about the adhesives for eyelash extensions. I’m talking the lash by lash extensions that are permanent and not the strips you glue to your eyes. Getting eyelash extensions has been a self-care thing for me and it’s cut down on my getting ready time in the morning. There is a lot of bad and misleading information out there, and I’v...
  5. I will say that when I asked my GI doctor about other AI issues to look out for he said that he wants me to have my thyroid checked each year and that he would like to keep an eye on my liver. He said that T1D is connected, but that it’s not typical to get celiac disease first - that T1D is usually diagnosed in adolescents or children, and that by 30 my c...
  6. I know that about 6% of people who are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes are eventually diagnosed with celiac disease. I’m curious if anyone knows what the stats are the other way around. Specifically, are people who are diagnosed with celiac disease at a high risk of developing type 1 diabetes after? Most of the literature that I’ve seen for this con...
  7. You don’t need to apologize. I was just asking because I find this all really confusing.
  8. But isn’t it the case that, unless we eat gluten, our AI disorder isn’t active. The article lists MS, RA, lupus, but those disorders are different than celiac disease in that they are usually managed with medication and there are lots of different triggers.
  9. Hi all! The flu has hit our family and our daughter’s pediatrician suggested elderberry syrup as a wonderful remedy. Tons of people swear by it and I figure it can’t hurt to try it. But then on an FAQ on a health site I read that people with autoimmune disorders should contact their doctor before taking it. I wonder if that’s because it boosts the immune syste...
  10. Hi all! usually I use President feta cheese but my stores are out....but they do have Athenos. Can I trust it? I always buy the chunk and not the crumble because I feel safer using it, and also because you get a lot more bang for your buck. I just wondered if you all trust Athenos. I assume it’s fine but always check.
  11. Their response to me: “Gluten is a component of grain starches such wheat, rye, barley, oats, and corn. We do not intentionally add any such grain starches in our tissue, towel and napkin manufacturing processes. However, we do not restrict these materials from entering the facilities overall, and as such a gluten free claim cannot be substantiated.”...
  12. Haha I called Kotex and their stuff is gluten-free! More of what I see are concerns about the adhesives that are used to glue the towels to the roll and to glue the first towel down. I don’t usually use those towels, but sometimes I do if I’m rushing.
  13. Ok, this is going to sound ridiculous (I think it sounds ridiculous). I am a member of a celiac disease group on Facebook, and a man wrote in, asking if his daughter (who has celiac disease) has to use certain brands of toilet paper and feminine hygiene products because some TP and maxi pads/tampons contain gluten.... First of all, is that even true...
  14. Hey all! I apologize if this topic has been covered before, but I want to get an answer, once and for all, about tocopherols. tocopherols are really the only ingredient in lists of ingredients that I seem to have confusion about. If products say “wheat germ” then I obviously don’t use them. But if tocopherols are listed in the ingredients I get so fr...
  15. Hi all, I know that cheese is usually gluten free (if it’s in a block or doesn’t have weird ingredients in it, etc) but I was wondering about mozzarella cheese. I know that fresh mozzarella is made with vinegar, but I’m curious about the blocked mozz or string cheese. I usually buy Walmart brand because they do a good job about labeling, and that’...
  16. I’m actually going to the lab in the morning for a throat culture. We’ll see what comes back, if anything. I don’t feel ok about taking antibiotics without confirmation that I need them. I pride myself on being able to stay away from them most of the time. While I await my culture results I’m going to take some Claritin. I haven’t tried allergy medicine ...
  17. When I was diagnosed I was shocked because my symptoms weren't that bad. I've never felt like people on here say that they've felt. Even then, the only reason I was tested was because my belly was acting up for about 3 weeks and I have two aunts and an uncle on the same side of the family with Celiac, and a lot of other AI disorders in my family. So I figured...
  18. Oh, I've never tried gargling with listerine. I just gargle with salt water when they get bad. I haven't tried much. I did try a water pik but didn't feel like it helped much. The water pik just makes them bleed because they get irritated from the stones. I actually think my kids may have gotten me sick last month and it's still hanging on, so I'm going to...
  19. Guys, since you’re my friends and you’ve offered me so much support throughout the last year and a half, I figured I would come here to whine/cry/vent. My ENT has recommended a tonsillectomy, because I have chronic issues with my tonsils. No, going gluten free didn’t help them - but I didn’t expect that to happen. They’re huge and cryptic, and they...
  20. Hi all! Ive been cooking with Ortega diced green chili’s (the fire roasted in the little cans), and I realized yesterday they don’t say “gluten free” on the can. I don’t see any ingredients that look suspicious. Since it’s the weekend I can’t call and ask. I’ve never had a problem with these. But I don’t know how great Ortega is about labeling...
  21. Thanks it was pretty exhausting but they seem to be on the mend!
  22. I have to agree with you. After I was diagnosed I quit eating gluten immediately, never looked back, and I don’t expect anyone to feel sorry for me. You’re right about how it just becomes second nature. I hate when I am invited to a potluck or when we have a carry-in lunch at work and people worry about what I’ll eat. I always bring a dish to share. I pr...
  23. I have gotten canker sores my entire life. I think that they can be hereditary because my paternal grandma gets them too. I seem to have a lot of traits that she has. Interesting how genetics work. Anyway, after I was diagnosed I thought maybe my Celiac was the reason. And here I am, over a year later, and I still get them. I’m so vigilant and I know it’s...
  24. Developing hives during exercise is a relatively common occurrence. "Exercise-induced urticaria is directly caused by your body having an allergic response to exercise. Cholinergic urticaria is caused by sweating that results from a rise in your body temperature. Exercising in hot weather makes you more susceptible to cholinergic urticaria. You may also notice...
  25. I’ll check out the health food store today to see if they carry this brand. Thanks for the tip!
