  2. Exercise Help Your Celiacs ?

    I too am a fitness instructor and presenter - I teach as many as 15 classes per week. When I get glutened and my belly swells up and I feel exhausted - I find it very difficult to strap on my microphone belt (my poor swollen belly), let alone teach a class. I also found that my bladder is ultra-sensitive when I get glutened, I have trouble doing any running or jumping because I feel as though I can't hold in my pee! The worst for me though is the humiliation of teaching a class in my skimpy uniform, with a disgusting bloated and tender belly. My solution has been to teach dehydrated and not eat for a day after gluttening to ease the belly - but I haven't stopped teaching. Because even though exercise doesn't feel good when am glutened, not exercising makes me feel infinitely worse. Like I am an invalid. Exercise keeps me in the land of the living! I saw someone else mention ataxia - being gluten free for almost a year now, my ataxia has never come back. I used to wake up every morning on 'stump feet' where I felt like my feet were amputated...it would last for the first hour of every morning (try teaching an aerobics class without feet! Lol!) but since going gluten-free it has never come back, even though I have gotten really badly glutened a few times. (okay, like many many times...but am getting better at avoiding the poison!) I recomend doing a detox program when you first go gluten-fee, and following that with a three day fast. It seems to really clear and clean my whole body out and promote intestinal healing. I try doing this a few times a year now to give my whole system a break. Cheers

Hi there, Sorry for scaring you - it was unintentional - I should have been more specific (I just assume everyone knows the difference between pernicious anemia and vitamin deficiency, when really, its so rare, most doctors don't quite understand it! LOL! I forget I'm not talking to myself!). Pernicious anemia is a disease, it is the body's inability to process the full range of B vitamins, these are mostly found in red meats. In this case the only solution is to inject it into the bloodstream. It is an incurable and lifelong disease. Failure to inject leads to neural failure and eventually paralysis and death. This very rarely happens anymore as it is such an easy condition to treat. Vitamin B deficiency is when someone, for temporary reasons, is lacking B-vitamins in their system. Either because they aren't ingesting enough, they have a gastro-intestinal condition interfering with absorption, or a stomach virus or cancer. Many runners will have vitamin b-deficiency because their system needs so much of it, and they aren't ingesting enough. In this case the solution can be to change the diet to eat more red meat, to add Bvitamins in one form or another (soluble, pill-form, sub-lingual, injections, etc). It is a temporary and easily solvable deficiency. WHen B-levels are up, and the predisposition adressed, this condition goes away. You may very well be vitamin b deficient, but odds are you don't have pernicious anemia. I hope this was less confusing...and reassured you. You probably just need a really good multi-vitamin!   4. Hi Amy, It took me a few years to get the guts to self-inject and most of the time my boyfriend does it for me. I found my injections were more regular when I could take 2 minutes at home rather than 3 hours or longer to get it done by a doctor. At your next appointment you can get your doctor to give someone close to you the "injection 101" demonstration, and then do it yourself. I had to play around with the injection schedule, I found that once a month was not enough (maybe because I exercise so much?) the last week would be an agony of exhaustion so I brought it up to every 3 weeks and make sure I time it either before or after my period when I have the biggest energy drop. This seems to be my magic formula - I would assume this would vary from person to person. When I was pregnant and nursing my ob-gyn stepped it up to every 2 weeks, so it does seem to depend on your body's requirement, rather than a set schedule that applies to everyone. If you are still chronically fatigued - it may be something more than the B-serums. Have you had your follow-up blood panel? You should get one after 6 months, and then one year on the injections. They might see a secondary deficiency (like Iron) at work. In theory, once your B-serums are in balance, the fatigue should go away. Take care and PM-me if you want to chat. Pernicious anemia is hard - I got to hate that damned needle so much I would cry every time, not from the pain, but from the helplessness I felt by being subjected mercilessly to that needle. I went through periods where I would just shake until it was done. Now I don't mind it anymore - I accept it finally, I guess. Take care -
  5. Hi there, Fatigue is probably related to the malabsorption of nutrients - in which case you may be deficient in one main nutrient, or multiple nutrients. You can have this checked in 10 minutes at a health clinic (its a simple hemaglobin test). You should ask them to check Iron, Folate, B-serums (not just B12 but the whole B panel) and magnesium to start. I get the monthly cyanocobalamin injections (B-serums) and if I inject myself even a few days late severe exhaustion begins, and symptoms begin. Symptoms are: exhasution (difficulty sleeping, difficulty waking up, difficult mobility, unable to perform simple physical tasks like showering or eating). anti-social behaviour (difficulty looking people in the eyes, engaging in conversations, answering questions takes me a long time) irritability (every little thing feels like a big deal, the whole world becomes annoying) anger (I pick fights with everyone) emotional mood swings (cry one minute, angry another) apathy (my smile completely disapears, I am very zombie like, expressionless, don't care about anyone or anything)) -------------------------- My personal experience: My mother can usually tell just by looking at my face if I have forgotten my injection. She'll come over, take one look at me and raise her eyebrows at my boyfriend and say...how many days? And he and I look at each other (me looking annoyed!) and then she's usually bang on. (bloody annoying when your mother actually is ALWAYS right! LOL!) I truly cannot live without my injections. Pernicious anemia is a fatal disease, those with pernicious anemia risk paralysis and death if they abstain from injections long enough. My doctor has warned me that if I skip as little as 3 months I will have permanent neural damage and death within 6 months. So, I am often a few days late, but I never skip it and I monitor my levels with frequent testing. ------------------------- As for iron deficiency, its easy to correct by taking a supplement. Most women are iron deficient, on and off - given our menstruation blood loss. I prefer Floradix, a liquid supplement that is easy on the digestion as it is a plant extract. ------------------------- Magnesium is a hormonal regulator. A deficiency in magnesium will cause fatigue, sleep disruption, menstrual disfunction, infertility and weight gain. Again, easy to adress with supplementation. ------------------------- I don't know much about other deficiencies, like vitamin D deficiency or A, E deficiency. But a good herbal gluten free supplement can help. Omega 3 (fish oil pills) are also a good idea. ------------------------ To make a long story short, I would suggest starting with a blood test to identify the culprit. You may also simply be dehydrated, or sleep deprived. Most people with kids are! namaste

    This works with Chicken or Turkey INGREDIENTS Chicken or Turkey (cubed) Dill 2 lemons 1 cup of plain yogurt or substitute salt n'pepper LEMON DILL CHICKEN SALAD Chop turkey or chicken into cubes Boil in a mixture of water, lemon juice, and dill Drain when cooked. Cool. when chicken is cold: add plain yogurt until chicken is coated add fresh coarsely chopped dill add juice of 1 lemon, and its zest add Salt and pepper to taste ************************************* Its a lovely cold salad, great for summer. High in protein, very light. It has dairy, but am sure you can substitute the yogurt with something else and get roughly the same fresh taste.

  9. Hello, Did you know that as many as 70% of adults are magnesium deficient and that magnesium is a key hormonal regulator? Many people who have weight problems find it easier to lose the weight once their magnesium intake issues are adressed. However, according to a lecturer (an endocrinologist) at my last recertification conference, magnesium deficiency cannot be adressed by diet as our soils are so depleted that foods that used to contain magnesium no longer does. Eating organic can help, but you'd have to eat half a ton of organic spinach per day in order to make a dent. She recomended supplements for everyone accross the board - (did not bring up any kidney related caution) take a daily magnesium supplement. I take mine from the makers of floradix, highly concentrated plant-based vitamins and minerals in soluble form. I find it easier on the digestion (and their products are certified gluten-free).   11. My sports nutritionist recomends soaking all fruits in veggies for one hour in a solution of white vinigar and water to take all the wax/pesticides/coatings off of the skins. Might be a good place to start, just in case. I was very depressed reading this - I live off of fruits and veggies. Ack! I am pretty confident the soaking with vinigar process should help a lot tho. Cuz, we need at least one commune-like society where the women get the chance to have a harem too! Just to balance things out a bit!!!

EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT ********** Divine Chocolate Torte (Gluten Free) 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted Passover margarine 1/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar 6 large eggs, separated 1 1/2 cups cooked and mashed sweet potatoes, fresh or canned 1 teaspoon Passover rum extract (optional) 10 ounces good-quality semi-sweet chocolate, melted and cooled 1/4 teaspoon salt Chocolate Ganache Glaze 1/2 cup water 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, coarsely chopped Toppings (optional) Unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted Curls of semi-sweet chocolate Pureed strawberries or raspberries Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a 9-inch springform pan with baking parchment. Torte: In a mixing bowl, cream the unsalted margarine or butter with the 1/3 cup sugar. Blend in the egg yolks, then the mashed sweet potatoes, rum extract (if using), and cooled chocolate. In another bowl, with clean beaters, whip the egg whites gently until they are a bit foamy. Then add in the salt and whip on a higher speed, slowly dusting in the two tablespoons of sugar to form stiff, glossy (but not dry) peaks. Fold one third of the egg whites into the sweet potato/chocolate mixture and work them in well to loosen the batter. Then, gently fold in the remaining egg whites, blending well but taking care not to deflate the mixture. Spoon the batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 40 minutes. The cake rises and looks dry, and slightly cracked on top when done. The middle should be soft but firm. Cool in the pan for 20 minutes, then remove to a wire rack. At this point, the cake can be frozen for up to a month. To decorate: Simply sift some cocoa over the top of the cake or decorate it with curls of chocolate (using a vegetable peeler and a warmish chocolate bar). The cake can also be offered with a pureed raspberry or strawberry sauce, garnished with chocolate shavings, or left as is, with a citrus leaf, a sweetheart rose, or several berries in the center. Makes 14 to 18 servings.

    Hey Dessa, Didn't see if anyone answered this post already, but yes there is a direct co-relation between deep sleep (or lack of it rather) and fat retention. The growth hormone called Cortisol (which regulates tissue building, repair and fat elimination) is only released during the deep sleep cycle. Why? Its a survival of the fittest protection response left over from caveman days. If a caveman was in a dangerous circumstance and unable to get sleep and rest, then his body's hormonal system would be devoted to stress hormones, those responsible for the fight or flight mechanism. Fascinating stuff isn't it? When some of my athletes are having trouble ditching fat, or hit weight loss or training plateaus, one of the first thing I look at is how much deep sleep they are getting. Its one of the reasons some sleep aids cause weight gain, because although they may induce sleep, they inhibit deep sleep. Hope this is helpful -
