Hello everyone,

 

I got diagnosed with coeliac disease about 2 weeks ago and have pretty much been gluten-free ever since, but I am still feeling really nauseous all the time, which gets a lot worse after eating/drinking anything. I also feel really bloated and after I eat, I look like I'm about 6 months pregnant, which isn't good for a 21 year old!

 

I was just wondering how long it should take before I start to feel better and if anyone has any advice to help with the discomfort in the meantime?

 

I have been eating less dairy since I was diagnosed, but haven't cut it out completely. I'm not sure if this is the right way to go in order to recover quicker?

 

Also, I gained a lot of weight before I was diagnosed and wondered how long before I starting losing and getting back to my old weight.

 

Finally, I am feeling really disorientated and my brain just feels like it isn't working at the moment, and I wasn't sure if this is normal!

 

I would ask my doctor these questions, but I'm in Spain for the next 5 months so unable to get much medical help!

You recover at the rate you recover. There is no way to really speed it up.

 

Some people have issues with dairy while healing, others do not.

 

More than likely is that you are still going through the withdrawl period from the Gluten.

Yep, withdrawl can last a few weeks if you go through out... sounds like you are. Wait it out and then things should start getting better.

 

You might want to drop dairy or just lactose for a while in case it is causing you some issues. Try coconut or almon milk for a few weeks.

 

L-glutamine can help with intestinal healing and might speed up the process for you a bit. Others around here have found probiotics to be a great help. It is pretty generally accepted that eating whole foods, with as little processing as possible, also helps you feel better a bit sooner too.

 

Good luck... enjoy Spain. (I'm so jealous!)

Welcome to the forum!  Expect to have your ups and downs before finally feeling better - it unfortunately doesn't happen overnight.  I was gaining a ton of weight too before my diagnosis, but sticking to a whole foods, low carb diet (read about the Primal diet) has helped me lose about 17-20lbs since my diagnosis.  It also helped my gut heal as I was adjusting to a gluten free diet.  Remember, the gluten free replacement foods (pasta, breads, cookies, etc) are actually loaded with more carbs/calories than the regular gluteny stuff.  Probiotics and digestive enzymes will help decrease the swelling and bloating in your tummy (which made me feel very self-conscious too in the beginning).  If you're going to Spain, they have these cards (I believe they're called Gluten Free Passports) that you can print out in Spanish so that you can take to restaurants and present it to your waiter (unless you speak Spanish).  It will let the chef know what foods in that culture you can and cannot eat.  I'm printing them out for my honeymoon in June.  

 

The brain fog (being disoriented) that you're also talking about will also clear up more as you stay gluten free.  Good luck and have fun in Spain!!!

    • Do you have an intolerance to corn?  I think that might be the source of the glucose fructose syrup.   
    • My son reacts with neurological symptoms when he comes into contact with gluten. He is NCGS. We are doing Paleo diet right now to include avoiding all dairy and he's doing well. They sell a coconut based kefir at Whole Foods and I don't believe it has a lot of additives like guar gum or locust bean gum. I personally have found, through elimination diet, that I get blisters and joint pain when I eat gluten and anything that contains soy, tamarind, guar gum and locust bean gum (I'm assuming these are all legumes). Dairy causes my skin to be dry and itchy. I've also reduced our sodium intake. I often question whether my son's neuro issues are a result of my not realizing that I was gluten sensitive during pregnancy. I lived in a brain fog and used to get spells of dizziness which I believe was caused by gluten. Anyways, I suggest try eliminating all of those ingredients and then add one back in after a week or two and see what happens. Wishing you relief 
    • When items have multiple ingredients it can be hard to tell to which we are reacting.  That gluten reactions can be delayed can also make it difficult and at times confusing. I would have random reactions at first and keeping a food and symptom diary helped a great deal. For myself the common item was soy but it took a few weeks to realize that was what was making me ill and I never would have been able to pinpoint it without the diary. I know this wasn't very helpful but I hope you are feeling much better soon.
    • They do a breath test, in some cases they can identify it in extreme cases visually if it has spread to the mouth like thrush or viewable on a scope.
    • Keep a food diary and record everything you eat, condiments, how it is fixed etc. You might have a CC cuplrit and find it this way. Also with this disease it is common to develop random intolerance issues and allergies to foods. If you get glutened depending on your symptoms you can do some things to get over them faster. They make a enzyme to break down gluten, will not stop the antibodies and not cure bit it helps with some of the gut issues to pass faster.  Teas, bone broth, plenty of liquids, and easy to digest foods, everyone is different on what these might be (for me nut flour/butter porridge as I have carb/grain issues). Pepto bismal, for most issues, Imodium for D, Magnesium Calm for C. You might want to help your supplements a bit, as during a glutening your going ot have more issues with absorption. Doctors Best and or Natural vitality Calm magnesium. Calm is a citrate and can be a bit rough on your gut so you have to start off at 1/4 tsp and slowly up the dose. Under times of stress your magnesium levels can really drop so this works wonders. Look up Liquid Health Stress & Energy and Neurological Support try 1tbsp each 3 times a day....that and hte magnesium will really work wonders with making the old happy guy you normally are. Under extreme issues I also turn to CBD oil and eat plenty of hemp and pumpkin seeds from GERBS allergen Friendly foods.
