Lately celiac has really been messing with my period.  Like for instance, in Nov.  I had 2 periods in one month.  Dec. and Jan were normal-ish.  I had one in Late Feb. and now I am having another one.  They seem to come at random.  Very annoying.  I also feel like crap on my period.  I am still dealing with intestinal inflammation and malabsorbtion issues.  My intestine is still really raw and inflamed.  (i've only been at this since the beginning of Jan with screw-ups in between.  I had to do a gluten challenge and it was horrible. I am dealing with all of that still)  a period does not help matters.

I found that gluten makes any PMS type symptoms worse.  I also had issues with very heavy periods on gluten.  Depending on your age, it could be peri menopause.  Celiac can cause early menopause.  I heard that in a recent webinar you can access here: http://www.celiaccentral.org/webinars/archive/

 

I'm really sorry that you had to suffer through a gluten challenge.  Whatever it is, I hope that you feel better soon.

Thanks Steph.  I have noticed that gluten makes my PMS worse.  It also causes heavy and irregular periods.  Sadly, my undiagnosed celiac that went on for years robbed me from my chance of having children.  I think it is a combo.  of gluten and peri.  I am over 40 so that could def. be involved.  

 

I was gluten free for 3 years and started having problems.  I went to a new gastro and he had me do a gluten challenge.  I lasted a few days and am still paying the price.  I developed DH everywhere and the intestinal issues are still causing me problems.  My gut feels tender and swollen and a period made it so much worse.

I'm glad you brought this question up.  I find that sometimes it is difficult to know if symptoms I deal with are related to Celiac Disease, aging, peri-menopause, "normal" woman issues...it's crazy to sift through!

 

Have you been in to see your gyno just to make sure everything is ok?    

 

I have had some issues with ovulation & my periods also...I am 41 yrs old & was dianosed Celiac in Fall of 2011...not sure how many years undiagnosed.  What is crazy with me, is my G.I. issues get worse during ovulation & my period.  My paps are normal & I've had my ovaries ultrasounded.

 

Thank you, Steph, for that link to the webinar about perimenopause.  I've talked to my G.I. dr about my issues with my period.  The main response I get is that inflammation during those times of the month can affect our whole system, but to make sure I am seeing my gyno. also.

 

Anyways, sorry you are dealing with this...keep us posted on how things are going.

mommy of 4, I was at the gyn in Dec.  I mentioned it to her and she didn't seem at all concerned.  Just a celiac or peri thing I suppose.

After going gluten free, I noticed that my PMS and period symptoms became much worse too - once I even called the GYN to ask for a pain medication because Midol (my usual go-to for period pains) wasn't even making a dent anymore.  I was surprised when she switched my birth control medication to something else - I thought, "yeah ok, this wont work but I'll humor her this time.."  Now its been fine and my periods are very light without the pain.  Would you consider taking birth control just to regulate yourself and your periods??  Just a thought...  :)

Also childless here. However, my periods were regular like clockwork until going gluten-free. Then I missed three in a row and now back on schedule. I think I've had this for so long, it would be impossible to know what "normal" is regarding PMS and menstrual symptoms. Being a rookie at Celiac, the longest I've made it is 35 days without being glutened (which means I'm either suffering or recovering when my period hits). Everything is awfully close in proximity in there and it stands to reason any inflammation will increase symptoms in either direction.

I thought it weird that my body reacted AFTER I eliminated gluten but think I threw everything into roller coaster mode with the back & forth issues of mistakes & recovery.

I've been having a similar problem. I was diagnosed with PCOS last October. I had a bad reaction to the medication they gave me to manage the symptoms, and I decided to go gluten-free at the beginning of December. When I was eliminating gluten, my periods came on time with no medication (only two or three times in a row), but now it seems like it's late every time I discover a new intolerance. Thankfully, it hasn't been painful. Last month, I had breakthrough bleeding that lasted a week before my period actually came. It's frustrating, but I assume once I get everything stable, it will start to regulate itself the way it should.

    • I wonder if this post is referring to me?  I tested high positive with blood tests and was denied an endoscopy as it was seen as unnecessary.  The Dr. said they already knew it was celiac based on the extremely high blood test.  I immediately went gluten free and all further testing including endoscopy which I had to beg and barter and pull strings to get, have been negative.  Might it be Pellagre instead?  My fatigue is much better gluten free but carbohydrates seem to cause almost instant brain fog.  I have at times doubted my diagnosis because it came from a misinformed Dr.
    • For me, the rash is rather handy. It serves as an indicator that I have exposed myself to gluten. With about 1 teaspoon of wheat based product ( bread etc ) I will come out in a rash somewhere within about six hours or so, and it will be itchy for about 24 hours then disappear. It gets worse the more gluten I consume. But looking on the bright side, it lets me know if I have encountered a "hidden source" of gluten, which is good. Rather this rash than the consequences of prolonged exposure from a hidden source.
    • Reality check in the past few weeks, looks like I got glutened at what should be a "safe" restaurant for gluten-free and gone right back to the beginning again recovery-wise Now too scared to eat anywhere and turning down social opportunities because of the food issues, what a miserable way to live this is.
    • Your issues is probably with the carbs then. there is a alternative. best pricing is miracle noodle. For Konjac rice substitute. Konjac flour works with some people others it does not. https://miraclenoodle.com/collections/miracle-noodle-rice-products There is a trick to cooking it but they make no carb noodles, and rice. I use the rice to make all kinds of rice like dishes like my mothers mexican fried rice etc. It does have a tad off texture and flavor but comes close. If your looking for no carb breads Julians Bakery makes some pretty decent breads but you HAVE to toast them to use them. I just found them a month ago....First time eating a bread in 2 year, and first time in as long as I can recall eating one that did not make me feel bloated and fat. No carbs, no sugars, no yeast, no dairy, no soy, and very low sodium...... Been eating french toast, vegan cheesy bread, bread with almond butter and sugar free jam I have honestly been in food heaven since I found it. BTW some celiacs can not tolerate any grains very rare but it happens.    OH and on what I have is really bad Ulcerative Colitis, so I have a bunch of other trigger foods that cause inflammation, bleeding, distention, constipation, gas, bloating etc. Carbs/sugars is a huge one for me fructose, glucose, sucrose.
    • They rotate growing rice and oats in the same crop. I unfortunately am intolerant to oats.  I have Dysbiosis according to a stool test, which is why I am quite sensitive to gluten among other foods.  May I ask what AI you have that makes you sensitive to carbs? I have been in and out of the doctor since November 2016 with chronic pain.  Trying to figure out what is going on with my gut, it's terrifying. I tried Dynasty jasmine rice from Thailand the other day which was recommended in 2009 by someone on here and a few hours later had the worst low blood sugar attack I'd ever had in my life. I am severely underweight due to the pain and I think this happened because I ate a bit too much (I LOVE rice) upon my first introduction back into my diet.  Even so I reacted just as I do when I ingest gluten (intense anxiety/hard to breathe/fast heart beat/constipation/intense pain under my ribs) So I don't think Dynasty is a safe brand, not for me at least. I only react this way to gluten. My other food sensitivities, the symptoms pop up around 24 hours later and are completely different.
