My Story

Hi folks.

Just recently self diagnosed with Celiac disease about 2 weeks a go and thought I would share my story with everyone.

For the last 5+ years I have been feeling very strange and have suffered loads of back and nerve pain, muscle stiffness, cracking joints, anxiety, depression, brain fog, stuffed nose, blurry vision, negative thoughts, heart palpation's, terrible rib cage pain, muscle tremors and loads of other very vague symptoms. Symptoms would all come and go until about a year a go when things started to get worse and the symptoms became more persistent. Every day I would wake up and feel like something else was wrong with me and I couldn't understand why. My legs felt like led and I could no longer play sports properly without injuring myself or feeling exhausted after a couple of minutes.

The real sign was when I started getting various types of stomach problems, bloating, gas, constipation and sometimes diarrhea etc. I went to the doctor and he said I had "gastritis" which I knew was a load of rubbish!

Anyway....

I was fed up of feeling ill so I decided to do some research on the internet and started reading about Celiac Disease. It was so obvious that was what I had so I decided to go gluten free asap and hey presto, all my symptoms disappeared in about 48 hours and I felt AMAZING!!  They have only come back a few times when I have eaten something I shouldn't have. I got caught out the other night when I ate some beetroot. Who would have thought beetroot would contain gluten! Within 10 minutes of eating the beetroot all my symptoms reappeared.  At least it confirmed I had made the right diagnosis.

I am still in shock because I feel so good now and I actually feel like my life is worth living again. There must be so many people out there who have the disease and just don't know it and maybe never will.

Luckily I am only 25 so I still have plenty time to get back playing sports and living life again properly :)

What symptoms did you have and how did you get diagnosed?

Cheers

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?

I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?

Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.
