So I'm *hoping* that my whenever-bleeding is a result of my hormones getting back on track...I missed about 2 periods a year and would get them every 40+ days before, albeit on a fairly regular schedule, before being gluten-free..

However, the past 3 months I've had spotting between periods, and now it seems the spotting is bleeding (no pun intended) into my next period on a 28 day schedule...

I haven't seen a doctor yet, but my pap tests and examinations in the past have never showed up anything.

 

Does anyone, man or woman, have stories about their hormones going out of whack at some point being gluten-free, and and eventually settling into normality?

I have recently restricted my diet more to avoid most grains or things that might have cc from processing, so even though I've been gluten-free for almost a year, I may have only recently been gluten-free enough for my hormones to change back to normal...if there is a normal!

Progesterone, or lack of it, caused spotting for me. Natural progesterone, no rx needed, 2x a day (morning/night) fixed it. Took a few months. Then, I went down to using it 1x a day for the last two weeks of my cycle.

My cycles have been all messed up. I'll have it one month normal then the next month i don't have it but i have all the symptoms. Next month i have two periods. I've read celiac messes with your cycles so i just try to deal with it. Just one more inconvenience of having issues with gluten. Haha

I'd been on birth control (sprintec) before my worst symptoms started. For 2 years I had stomach problems (diarreah, severe bloating and painful gas, malnutrition reflected in my fingernails, foggy mind, etc), and then I broked out in hives. I was diagnosed with chronic urticaria, and this combined with my other symptoms led me to start a gluten-free diet (my doctors are a little slow on the uptake, so I'm hoping they'll catch up eventually...).

 

So, once I started the diet I got dramatically better. I had to start weening of the 150mg of hydroxyzine, 45mg of Prednisone, and Cholcrys that I'd been taking for the hives. When I started this medication, I went off the birth control because I was worried that all of these things combined would cause some major mood problems. My period was pretty stable for that month, but then once I started the Gluten Free diet I did have period issues. I've had bleeding (not like, period type blood, but as if I was actually bleeding) that would come about every 2-3 weeks. I'm not sure if this is from coming off the birth control or the diet change or both, but that's been my experience so far. I've been gluten free for about a month, off the birth control for I guess 7 weeks?

Very hot topic for me. I'm almost 5 months gluten-free at this point and my periods are totally out of whack. They started in November, my last month before diagnosis, with a couple of 14-day cycles and one episode of long spotting before the period. Then I went gluten-free after DX and it got back on track. Last month, though, I had a 35 day cycle and this month I'm at the 33rd day and still waiting. Now, I'm almost 48 yrs old and it might be ascribed to menopause and it's a possibility but I have no other symptoms (hot flashes etc) and most of all, my gyno told me a couple of months back that I am full of estrogenes. So what is going on? I just don't know... maybe menopause and gluten are interacting. Also, I'm having other celiac symptoms that I never had before (rashes etc)... nothing major but annoying.,,

I'm 30, taking no medications, only tried birth control for a month. I fe;t awful on them and didn't exactly relish the idea of cycling through different ones every 3 months to figure out which pill I should take, so I stopped. Since that incident I'd been bloated ever since...which I suppose I should be thankful for because without the bloat I may never have figured out the celiac diagnosis :-p

 

My period seems to have come and gone now, we'll see if bleeding happens again at some point.

47 years old, have been going through stomach issues for the past 2 months, and have now reached day 59 of my cycle.  2 tests say it is not pregnancy.  Therefore, it is all from what is going on inside of me, as I said a few weeks ago, the joys of womanhood and gluten issues.  About once a year I go through a 49 day cycle usually around my anniversary, now I realize that is when we celebrate 2 birthdays and an anniversary all within 2 weeks, major bad foods for me in that time frame, so that explains that.  I do think 59 is a new record for me.  Yes, it could be menopause, I would love for it to be, but with everything else going on inside of me, I know its not.  Just to let you all know you are not alone.

    • Hi everyone! I'm hoping for some guidance on the gluten challenge. My doctor ordered the blood test, but doesn't seem to know much about it. Thus why I'm here. I've been doing a gluten challenge for two weeks now and I'm miserable. But I never really cut gluten out of my diet 100% before. I would occasionally have breaded chicken, soy sauce, a flour tortilla etc. maybe once every couple days or so. I starting really noticing reactions which prompted me to ask for the test from my doctor. I had been on a limited gluten diet for less than two months. I'm not sure why I'm so affected by it all of a sudden.  So my question is, with the limited amount of gluten I was eating before and the short length of my limited gluten diet, could I be fine to take the test now? I really don't want to get a false negative. But holy cow I'd love to feel better again.  Symptoms: diarrhea gas floating, smelly, hard to flush stool extreme fatigue (like I have to lie down within a couple hours of eating gluten, and lately I've just been in bed virtually all day.) I'm losing my hair! Depression.    Also, I've always had problems with my digestive issues, but it's definitely gotten worse in the last year or two.    Thanks for for your help! Alyssa
    • I bought Spicely Organics Chili powder from Whole Foods in Bellevue, WA.  I got very sick after eating it, so I tested it with three separate gluten tests.  They all came up positive for >10ppm, which is what their "certification" says they test below.   I just wanted to warn everyone away from them.  They clearly have quality control problems and are not safe for celiacs.
    • It's no secret that nearly all traditionally brewed beers contain barley. The flavor and body barley imparts on traditional beers is partly responsible for their rich, full taste. Finding alternatives to barley that are suitable for brewing gluten-free beer has been a challenge. One solution has been to brew beers with traditional barley ingredients, and then use a combination of enzyme action and filtration to render a final product that test below 20ppm gluten required for gluten-free products.     • First have you been tested for celiac disease? Any doctor can do the blood test but you have to be eating gluten on a daily basis for the test to work, nut much just a half slice of bread a day. You should get this tested, the high constipation, coughing stuff up was very common for me before diagnosis. The coughing stuff up for me was from a allergy that developed I did not know of, the mucus was draining down my throat and choking me at times, and was constantly running a fever and night sweats. I was constipated for 4-10 days average back then and drinking plenty of liquids did not help in the least. Your gut rumbling could be many things, celiac is one, SIBO is another especially with the bad breath. in your case it could be related to constipation causing rotting, fermenting, and bacterial overgrowth of the waste in your system. Now to deal with the immediate symptoms, your constipation is also a sign of magnesium deficiency, I imagine you might have noticed some other symptoms from these. Now normally I would suggest either the Natural Vitality Calm or Doctors Best which is easier on the stomach. In your case I straight up suggest the Natural Vitality Calm it is a Magnesium Citrate and works a bit like a laxative. Start with 1/4 tsp twice a day in a beverage, I like the orange or the cherry in a hot green tea or you can try it in a juice. Up the dose slowly over a periods of a week to the full dose or perhaps a little more til you get a bit looser stool.     You mentioned the mucus in the stool 2 things cause this normally. Undigested fats, and inflammation/irritation causing the body to produce the mucus to help defend itself and purge the irritants. A doctor can probably tell you more but I might suggest a digestive enzyme in the mean time. I like to use a super papaya enzyme before and after a meal, find them on amazon. Jarrow also makes full enzyme complex that can help. Other thoughts if your on dairy, stop, with the constipation, and other issues this is a equation for trouble and you can reintroduce it in a few months when you clear up and see if it bothers you then. The bad breath can be a sign of lactose intolerance/digestive issues with dairy also. If it comes you you have celiac then you would have your explanation here as the villi which produce the enzymes to break down lactose are damaged/destroyed first causing most to develop a temporary lactose intolerance which for some goes away after a few months of healing. B-vitamin folic acid, and niacin will be a huge help also with some things. but will we get into that a bit later feel free to look up Liquid Health Stress & Energy if you thing it might be relevant at this point it is what I use 3 times a day with another blend they have.
