I've had digestive troubles all my life - diarrhea  three to four times a week, stomach bloating, and within the last six months, daily diarrhea and extreme pain before bowel movements.  Two weeks ago, I finally decided enough was enough, and I stopped eating gluten to see if that was the problem.


Great news - I feel a lot better, and I'm only having diarrhea every other day or so.


Bad news - I just found this forum today, and now I realize that I probably should have stayed on gluten until I could be tested.  I called my PCP today, and they can see me in three days for testing.


Would it help to go back on gluten right away for the three days, or should I just see what happens at the blood test, and if it doesn't work, do a gluten challenge?

Yes, I would definitely go back onto gluten if you are able. Some people stop making autoantibodies almost immediately, and if you are one of those, being gluten-free for two weeks could cause a false negative. resume eating gluten so you are making autoantibodies that can be detected by the blood tests.


Better yet, delay your test for a week or two so your test is as accurate as possible... if you can stand the wait.  ;)

Yes Goldi, three days off gluten will not likely mess up your results.  But insist that the below tests, be run in it's totality.  Print it off and require the full panel.  Insist if not demand. Many doctors are not Celiac Aware and don't order the full panel, and then the tests are not diagnostic in the end.  So request it ALL -the full Panel.


The following are the celiac specific blood tests:

Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgA
Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgG
Anti-Endomysial (EMA) IgA
Anti-Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA
Deamidated Gliadin Peptide (DGP) IgA and IgG
Total Serum IgA

    • Is there a brand name of those rice tortillas?   That sounds good. I"d love to find a wrap or tortilla or bread or something that has no corn product in it. I looked up the Enjoy Life stuff.  It doesn't mention on amazon that there is no corn in it, but when you read the ingredients on your boxes, is there no corn ingredient, including no xantham gum? It'd be so great to find baking items with no corn.  
    • I think a chicken soup would be more soothing.  When my gut feels like this, too many veggies can make it feel even worse.  In this spot, I usually put chicken breasts in the crockpot with broth and cook it all day.  If things are really bad, I will just eat the chicken with a boiled potato...every meal.  Boring, but so gentle for my gut.  If things are starting to settle, I will add well cooked veggies...carrots, green beans, etc.  I also will eat bananas as I do really well with them and drink ginger tea or peppermint tea.  I hope things start to settle down for you. 😀
    • To be nice the steamer has a cover if you get the grill plate, also get the splatter cover, protects your food from CCed microwaves and prevents messes. The linked ones actually fit together, I got mine at the local walmart. IT is wonderful as you can grill stuff on it IN THE MICROWAVE. good for meats, bacon, veggies etc.
    • I was thinking about it this morning and I was thinking it does almost seem like I somehow had some gluten.  I just can't think from what though.  But I lost 2 pounds the past few days and that is what seems to happen when I get glutened - I ge the bad stomach issues, but also lose a few pounds quickly.  When I react to other things, like possibly corn, I don't get nearly as severe in the stomach issues, and I also don't lose any weight.  That is a great idea to make a soup and just have that for a few days.  I was going to try and make things that on my food journal were all around some days I was feeling better, but soup sounds good.  Do you have any that seem more gentle on your stomach?   I am thinking maybe just a veggie one with carrots, potatoes, green beans, spinach or kale. I do usually add a small can of tomato sauce, but maybe this time I better not.  Or a homemade chicken soup with some rice maybe.
