Does that mean us?

When referring to a new super strain of flu. I've always wondered are they talking to me? Sadly I get sick all the time mostly from a train carriage full of people :(

Should I get the flu vaccine? It's free in Australia.

If you get the flu vaccine make sure you know what is in it.  I saw on the website of the Center for Disease Control http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vac-gen/additives.htm Thimerosal (mercury) is in it..  They also list fermeldahyde as a possible ingredient in vaccines.    They have a list of each specific vaccine and its contents.

I don't get vaccines  I read the label and consider whether this is for my best health or not.  Just as I would anything I put into my mouth...  I take my health seriously and do follow a careful diet, garden, and exercise.

. You can find literature with each vaccination box.  You Physician should be able to give the list to you as you consider what is in the vaccine.  You may find some surprises if you look carefully into what each ingredient is.

I found evidence .on the center for Disease Control that abortion materials are  in some vaccines.  I copied the ingredients for Adenovirus. PSAWYER just pointed out that this is not the flu.It is an example of the ingredients in one vaccine:  The adenovirus vaccine.

sucrose, D-mannose, D-fructose, dextrose, potassium phosphate, plasdone C, anhydrous lactose, micro crystalline cellulose, polacrilin potassium, magnesium stearate, cellulose acetate phthalate, alcohol, acetone, castor oil, FD&C Yellow #6 aluminum lake dye, human serum albumin, fetal bovine serum, sodium bicarbonate, human-diploid fibroblast cell cultures (WI-38), Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle’s Medium

To clarify it is the human-dipoid  cell cultures which I believe are from an aborted fetus.  I have discussed this with a few medical doctors and they did not deny it.

Incase you need a to find out what a human diploid cell is I went here to find out about it.http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC377233/?page=1  I believe these cells are also called stem cells.

I am sorry that I did not fully support this at first.  My wording, I thought, was stronger than it should have been.  I would not have picked this fight here on the forum, but forgot that it was not common knowledge.  I hope that you will forgive this.  I also hope that I have fully supported my position with credible sources.

If you get the flu vaccine make sure you know what is in it.  I don't get them because they put in mercury, fermeldahide, and materials derived from abortions.  I take my health seriously and do follow a careful diet, garden, and exercise.  One can find out what they contain by visiting (USA) the Center for Disease Control Website.

Can you post a link for this, please?

If you are continueing to get glutened, which is the impression I got from another of your posts, your body is going to be so busy fighting the gluten that it won't be able to fight off other stuff.  I have worked in schools and with the public for years and I used to catch everything that was going around pre gluten free but very rarely get ill now. That may off course not be the case for you.

Do what you can to prevent picking up these 'bugs'. Wash your hands a lot and keep them away from your face as much as you can. Hopefully your body will be better able to fight off communicable illnesses once it has healed from gluten.

As far as getting a flu shot talk to your doctor about any concerns you have and then make a decision on whether or not to get one.

I won't get into an argument here on the intelligence of mercury in vaccines, but with one exception it is only in multidose vials as a preservative and can be easily avoided by simply requesting a prefilled syringe injection. As for other preservatives, anyone can contact doctors and pharmacies in their area and see which brand is available and if it is prefilled or not and then go look up the ingredients.

http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/vaccine/vaccines.htm

Only one company uses mammalian cells to make their flu shots, and they use animal cells. Still, it is quite frankly a huge leap forward to have the shot available to people with egg allergies. I did also see that there is a new insect based one that was approved just this year.

http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/vaccine/cell-based.htm

http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2012/11/21/fda-approves-new-type-of-flu-shot/

The shots are safe for us and soon should be more readily available for people with egg allergies also. This is good news. Many of us have been sick for a long time and are frankly sick of being sick. If a simple shot can save me from the flu, I'll do it.

Pre-existing conditions: Illness disease or treatment that may result in danger from taking the flu vaccine. This changes depending on which vaccine you receive. Go to: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/should-not-vacc.htm and scroll down for each vaccine.

If you have a milder condition, discuss with you doctor the risks of getting vaccinated and weigh those with the risks of getting sick. 36,000 people die each year from the flu.

Since going on the gluten-free diet, I find that I don't get AS sick as I used to.  I still seem to catch colds but I don't end up with fevers for days on end or secondary bronchitis or sinus infections. It could just be a coincidence that I don't get as sick now that I'm gluten-free, but I doubt it.

If you are having a tough time staying gluten-free, and have found the flu shot works for you in the past, I would get it. It's always good to have that healthy edge.

I am one of those people who tends to get sick for a week every time I get the flu shot so I gave up on them; I actually seemed to get sick less when I skip the shot. Instead I use homeopathy flu "vaccines". It works for me, whether it is the placebo affect or not, but I know it's not for everyone.

Good luck, and best wishes getting the gluten out of your life.

Can you post a link for this, please?

.  Sorry, I forgot that this wasn't common knowledge, I have discussed it with several doctors and a person that used to work in a vaccine lab.  Please see my amended post for a link to the Center for Disease Controls ingredients of vaccines lists.  .

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vac-gen/additives.htm  You can find what ingredients are in these vaccines by visiting this sight.  Look for a list which shows the specifics for each vaccine.  Also, they have a general list of some of the ingredients.

First, there is not one "flu shot". It varies from one year to the next depending on which strains of flu are going around. Some years more than one shot is needed if a strain is recognized later than usual.

Then, some vaccines use live virus weakened to a point that can not cause sickness but will cause the body to produce antibodies. Other vaccines do not use live virus.

Some vaccines are not injections, but tablets or nasal sprays.

Further, people with egg allergy can not take some vaccines but eggs are not used in all vaccines.

All these things are listed on package inserts and can be found on several websites by searching "influenza vaccine package insert".

If anyone decides not to get the flu vaccine, they should avoid contact with people who could be put in danger by the spread of the flu. Unvaccinated persons may be carriers, causing illness or death in "at risk" populations, small children, the elderly, pregnant women, people with compromised immune systems and chronic illnesses to name a few.

I failed to support this well at first.  I was rather strong for the audience.  Please forgive this and I did post some links now for people to look into the ingredients for themselves.

That is interesting about the Adenovirus vaccine, except that the Adenovirus vaccine is NOT a flu vaccine.

On that ingredients page there are six Influenza (flu) vaccines listed, none of which contain the materials in question.

I did look up adenovirus and I thought that it was the flu.  I did express it that I believed it was the flu..  My first intent was to discuss what I do about vaccinations in general and other vaccines have this ingredient.  I hadn't considered the flu vaccine in particular since I am not familiar with it having rejected all vaccines.  The question which I thought was asked was if a certain person should get the flu vaccine.  I thought I would voice an opinion for no.  It would had been better if I just encouraged the person to read the ingredients first as I have done in the past..

Your statement refers to childhood immunizations, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis A and polio for which another method has yet to be found and the use of two (2) cultures from the 1960-70's still exist. Please understand, these are the only two cultures being used. No abortions are being used to harvest cells, no fibroblasts are being created to harvest cells. No research is being funded to allow harvest of aborted cells or to allow cells created for harvest.

Regarding the two cultures from forty years ago, the statement of position most researched and thoughtful comes from the Vatican:

 http://www.immunize.org/concerns/vaticandocument.htm

Please read this entire article with as much thoughtfulness as was given to it's production. Then please let us know your thoughts. Should we stop protecting against deadly childhood diseases?

Again, none of this has to do with yearly influenza vaccines.

Straying back to Unhappy Coeliacs question for a bit.  UC, if you get sick often maybe it's time you changed your diet.  Half way measures don't work for the gluten-free diet.  You need to make a serious commitment to the gluten-free diet and get the gluten out of your body.  Then your immune system can focus it's efforts on fighting germs and other nasties instead of fighting itself.  That frees up antibodies to do something helpful for you instead of hurting you.  Making yourself sick on purpose is not helpful to your health.  It is not hard to stick to the gluten-free diet if you keep at it for a while.  It gets easier as your habits and expectations adjust.  If you want to get a flu shot that's ok.  But it won't change the fact that you are making yourself sick by consuming gluten on a regular basis.  Personally I don't get flu shots and I rarely get the flu.  Just because you haven't stuck to the gluten-free diet so far doesn't mean you can't do it now.  You can do it, if you decide to.  But that's your choice to make.  I do know that I am much happier and healthier on the gluten-free diet than I was eating gluten.  You may be surprised by how much improvement you can get by sticking to it for 6 months 100%.  Some improvements take time to happen.  But they can be very worthwhile.

Your claims that "flu vaccines are made from aborted fetuses" is absurd and unfounded.

Human stem cells are not always derived from "aborted fetuses".

the OP has received solid advice about flu vaccines being safe for celiacs.

That's enough for a celiac to make a decision about what to do.

For the record, I do not get one because my arm swells up like a balloon and is sore for a week.

I taught for 22 years (schools are a breeding ground for this thing) and never contracted the flu. Never.

My hubs got the shot this year (he is not a celiac, but he is healthy and is gluten free) and he got the flu anyway.

and then, he gave it to me...

soo? what??.

Diana

I again quote post #2. It has been edited many times, but the edit window is now closed, and this will be the final version. Nevertheless, I am capturing it (again).

The source cited at the CDC lists 51 vaccines. Of those, six (6) are for Influenza (flu). None of those six contain material from human cells.

Material cultured from human stem cells is used to produce vaccines for Hepatitis-A and Rubella (German measles). Viruses must be grown on live cells, and so far research has not found an alternative host for these two viruses.

The Adenovirus vaccine was mentioned. It is not related to flu, and is not in general use, but is made by one manufacturer under contract to the US Department of Defense. If you are in the US military, it may be of concern to you.

To sum up, and end this discussion:

With regard to the original question, there is no reason for someone with celiac disease to avoid the flu vaccine because of celiac disease.

The flu vaccine does not contain material derived from human stem cells.

    • Yes I eliminated high glycemic foods. Eating only small amounts of carbs. No fruits, added sugars, starchy grains. Eating lots of fibrous veggies. Eating olive oil, as I don’t seem to tolerate the saturated fats or MCT oil. Allergic to nuts and seeds unfortunately.
    • Just wondering if you have an update at all? Going through the same thing at the the moment with my type 1 14 yr old. I would be interested to know what your gi said and how your daughters doing now? xx
    • Please check the date on post, you just responded and tried talking to a person from 7 years ago. On consideration to the subject Poatoes are a huge flare factor for my UC and cause my blood sugar to sky rocket...I am not even diabetic but for some reason potatoes (hash browns) that I tried a few months ago with some eggs shot it up over 400. not even a control test with table sugar managed that.
    • Have you tried eliminating high glycemic foods? Fruits, added sugars, starchy grains, potatoes. etc? Also adding in slow digesting fibers and fats can prevent insulin spikes, MCT oil is also known to help and protein. Many find consuming nuts and seeds higher in fiber early on in the meal or before a meal can slow down insulin responses and prevent spikes. I always tend to eat a hand full of whole shell pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, cocoa nibs, etc. while fixing my food, this gets me starting to feel fuller sooner, and seems to help in over all down the road. I know I had some references somewhere to these. I know I read somewhere about the antioxidants in in whole shell seeds like pumpkin and hemp also helped the body regulate insulin levels.
    • Dear AWOL Cast Iron Stomach, Your husband is right bread is bad for you. Of course it's more than bread and gluten, until now it was amateur hour trying to self diagnose and tame this "lion". However they let you down. You slipped through the cracks over and over again it is not your fault your not the Dr. You made mistakes and errors acting like a celiac , not knowing for sure you were, and not feeling like you could fully claim to be or reach out for support . Now you know your husband was closer than any Dr. up until now to determine your illness. Now something is in your record, now hopefully you will be dismissed less, respected more, maybe they will realize its an actual condition going on- not all in your head. Will they? Who knows! Do you care? This is now official, now explained, you not only have to give up gluten, but milk, and corn. In fact give up 98% of processed anything. The cluster of lifetime symptoms were not  "just you", "in your head", "you are not a difficult patient", "when the Dr or nurse looks at you like a nut job you don't have to feel the dismissiveness and condescension. It's an illness and nothing to be shameful of  what is shameful is they and their colleagues missed you failed you. In fact being missed for 4 decades is unjust to you. You were missed time and time again from age 5 to 43, decade after decade after decade, symptom after symptom. It's not that you didn't try from the 5 year old begging to go to the Dr, to the 20 going to the hospital again for another bout of gastroenteritis hoping to get an IV, to the thirty year old saying something is wrong why is this happening, to the forty something a restaurant fed me gluten when I asked for gluten-free, I have been gluten free for 3 1/2 years ,  I have more symptoms and pain than before . I felt so good for those gluten-free years- please help me-make it stop. So many things explained it makes you experience a range of emotions. Grateful: Relief and gratefulness someone finally agreed to send you to someone to test you. She saw past the other diagnosis' and the albatross IBS diagnosis. All the ages and stages of symptoms are explained they all fit. Everyone of them! Someone else also has had them. You are not alone. Read the forum-you fit like a glove. Anger: Anger for the way you have been treated by the medical community, family, some ex boyfriends, friends and coworkers. Anger for the length of time you endured this. Hurt: Hurt for the times people said unkind things to you when you were symptomatic or flaring . you are experiencing symptoms that change your body people are rude to congratulate you on a "pregnancy" you didn't announce or ask why you are not slim when you hardly eat. you are not over emotional -  you are suffering from neuro symptoms, you are not making this up for attention Sad & Guilty: Can I work again? Do I want to work again? What kind of work can I do now? Can I find a job and work PT from home? You didn't envision this your husband having to be sole bread winner now what? I am overwhelmed thinking about this-stop? You now have closure and know how and why you lost your first pregnancy. You now know why you were high risk, complications,  with your children in Pregnancy & Delivery that they couldn't be explained back then It explains why in pregnancy you lost weight and why your morning sickness was extreme and seemed to last longer than anyone you knew,  that your Puppp rash was likely misdiagnosed DH It is not your fault none of it. Please forgive yourself for what you did not know. Your children forgive you. Believe them when they say its not your fault. You can cry, but you can no longer blame yourself. You are a good mother just one with an illness your children will learn to accept. Withdrawn: Why are you withdrawing from your husband? Should you ask him if he wants a divorce? Should you push him away? You didn't know before marriage what was happening you knew something autoimmune was brewing shortly after, but nothing showed on tests. Was this unfair to do to him? Doesn't he deserve someone better? Someone well? Now you can't retire and travel the world as society retirement cliché dictates. Can you afford this illness ? How will this financially impact your spouse, your family?. Why did you do this to this poor man? You are so selfish, you wanted marriage and kids, but was this fair to them? Don't your kids deserve a healthier mom? How will this impact them? Oh my gosh are they going to get this too? Will they grow to resent you? Your illness and diet has taken over their lives! Oh gosh no one say hi to me-please. I hate people and I am too sick to pretend and be fake friendly today. I don't want to tell you I am ill. I don't want to talk about this. I have to absorb this. I hate you people for being healthy. Don't tell me I don't look well. I will snap, I don't want to snap, I am irritable ,and don't feel well. Just keep giving off the unapproachable vibe keep them away.  Am I strong enough to do this? Acceptance: Calm down the inflammation, lack of nutrients, and GI damage is messing with your head. Your husband said for better for worse. Your kids have no choice you are their mother and you are a good mom -you have always been, always will be even on your worst day. If they get this they will be ok. You are strong enough to do this you are just ill and most importantly you must remain here in case they get this so you can guide them and be there for them. Got it? Go on the forum you are not alone it will be ok. You will get this lion back in the cage and manage it. It will be ok. If you can't travel in retirement one day you will find other hobbies or things to occupy your time. He's not going to leave you over this. If he does it will be ok. You'll manage-you always do. You have an answer, you knew it was coming, keep reading, learning, seeking support, and one day it will all work out. You will process all this and will be at peace-until then keep going and above all AVOID GLUTEN!
