Thank you all for your help and I do a lot of research on this site but it is helpful when you really get to talk to people who are going through what you are so thanks!

On another note, the anti-fluoride folks point out that most grapes are treated with pesticides that are high in fluoride which will persist through the wine-making process.

I've had fluoride poisoning and can't tolerate it at all now. There is just way too much of this toxic, carcinogenic substance in everything these days.

Organic wines could reduce those risks.

I've had fluoride poisoning and can't tolerate it at all now. There is just way too much of this toxic, carcinogenic substance in everything these days.

Organic wines could reduce those risks.

this isn't an anti ( insert your agenda here) forum, so I'm not going to insist you back this claim up with scientific evidence. We dont need this topic to go off on odd tangents.

We were discussing gluten and wine. Lets keep the discussion to that, please.

The fluoride content is extremely relevant considering that this is a conversation about why a person might experience a reaction to wine.

Here is a link to an entire article that goes into all of the details about the fluoride levels of grapes being beyond those allowed with links to the scientific studies.

The first link is not a reliable scientific source.  The second link pertains to fluoride poisoning as an immediate event - a child eating the whole tube of toothpaste for example.  It mentions that low levels will not "poison" you.

 

Once again, I would caution that this is a Celiac forum and other agendas are not appropriate here or pertain to the topic "Is Wine Gluten Free"

Unfortunately, being a mod means I sometimes have to remind people of the rules they agreed to when they signed on here. One of those rules pertains to making statements of fact that are not generally known and having reliable back-up to show us, so we can learn from it.

 

  Also, sometimes, I have to steer the topics back to the original posters intention.  If a member wants to discuss something unrelated to the topic or even the forum, they can start their own, new topic in Related disorders/research or the chat/Gab section or another section it might fit.

It's ok.  As Steph pointed out, the effects are cumulative, so all you have to do is step away from the computer and you should be ok.

See how funny people can be when they consume wine?  If wine had gluten, they would be foggy headed and cranky. Or is it the flouride that makes you foggy headed and cranky?  :o

And does this mean that if I drink more wine, will it prevent further cavities?  How brilliant is it that they make wine with flouride now, instead of having to drink all that tap water?  ;)

"I'm not an expert on liquor I barely know what half the things are in the store but the owner seemed to have a lot of gluten-free customers and said many report getting sick with certain wines or "wine like drinks" (he said anything made in a day and not aged isn't wine haha referring to my arbor mist question) and he saw some consistency in the complaints of real wines making him wonder if some have contamination issues. "

 

A lot of wine coolers and "wine like drinks" have malt in them, which is barley, and are not gluten-free.  I've not had a problem getting glutened by actual wine though.  But I have noticed that alcohol affects me differently since going gluten-free.  It takes much less of it for me to feel the effects now.

    • I think the gripe with this sort of article is that it's not telling the right story. When you write anything, you have a choice about whose story you tell and the consequences of it.  While such articles are factual in the sense that objectively, a GFD is worse than a similar regular one, the focus of these articles undermines the struggles of those who must be gluten-free while also not really giving any information that is likely to result in changed behaviour. All this sort of article does is justify the anti-gluten-free circlejerk. I think many of the journalists here think they're on the side of people with celiac disease because they're underlining that the fad diet is dumb/pointless/harmful/whatever. While this may be true, the message the reader remembers is this: the GFD is frivolous. It doesn't matter if there's a line in the article that says something about how the GFD is a medical necessity for those with celiac disease. People don't remember the asterisk in the article. All they remember is that the GFD is for idiots.  What would be valuable and useful is discussing celiac disease - symptoms, longterm consequences etc. and how strict those with celiac disease must be with the GFD in the context of this research. This will do a better job of convincing people that the fad diet is dumb, but do so in a responsible way that doesn't undermine the real problems faced by those with celiac disease or other medical conditions. Plus, the increased awareness might make someone realize that they should get tested.
    • I had to run go google zonulin. Never heard of that! Makes perfect sense though.. I assume every single person on earth with AI disease has leaky gut! Ya know, I drank several glasses to a bottle of merlot every night after work to "unwind" for many years before I figured out it aggravating the leaky gut! I'm SO glad I quit before it did more damage ... Seriously, metformin is awesome. I love it. Great for metabolic resistance and free at a lot of places with an RX!
    • I am on Armour too.  No metformin for me yet.  I am trying to manage on a low carb high fat diet for many reasons like having a damaged gut and being allergic to so many meds (yah know....swelling, hives, etc.).  Leaky gut.  Nope.  Better.  Zonulin seems to be increased in celiacs.  I am going to blame my gut on that!  Seriously, there seems to be a link.

    • Wow you have ALOT going on! Sorry to hear about your ongoing issues. Are you super duper strict with avoiding gluten or do you think you are still getting cross contamination? I will check out that portion of the forum- THANKS a bunch for that. It is all a bit overwhelming. I saw some people post that they saw "dramatic improvement!" within 2 weeks and I'm going rreeeaaalllly? *insert sarcasm.. haha. I know I wont get that lucky. I take metformin and armour and victoza. Type 2 diabetes runs in my family too. My glucose levels were never really high and I never got the official type 2 diagnosis but ive dropped all excess weight on these meds. I hope to wean soon. Did you fix the leaky gut? That is a daunting task isn't it!
