Has Anyone Been Glutened Just By Walking Into A Bakery?

I know it's theoretically possible, but I can't imagine that it's THAT common or easy to accomplish. But this morning, I went to a little bakery to pick up a gift for someone, and within five minutes of leaving I started to feel the beginnings of a glutening, mostly the weird tiredness and the droopy eyes. But really, that fast? Only being there for a few minutes? It seems weird. But I hadn't eaten anything else out of the ordinary and I felt great up until walking through those doors. While in the bakery, my hands brushed against a couple of pieces of bread on my tray, but I didn't touch my mouth and I washed my hands as soon as I could after leaving. 

 

Now I've spent all morning with my symptoms steadily increasing, with a gluten headache brewing, and extreme sleepiness, detachment, and tummy pains. It stinks. I was on day four of no glutenings and feeling great. Has this happened to anybody else?

I thought so, too, but I was shocked at the quickness of the reaction. Five minutes seemed way too fast for flour particles to travel into my nose or throat and into my tummy/intestines. Hm. Well, I definitely won't be going back into bakeries anymore!

I think that it has happened to me too.  I think that I am sensitive to very low levels.  One thing I can think of is that you have tiny blood vessels in your nose and maybe something it can hit your system faster that way.  I agree that it seems strange and is not typical.  There may be an allergy component.  That could explain the speed of the reaction too.

I avoid bakeries.  Last time my family baked bread, I walked in, smelled it and left.  Whether it is a gluten reaction or something else, I cannot tell you.  Exposure will cause eye twitches, sty near my eye, fatigue, and swelling.  I stay as far away as possible of grocery bakeries.  Did you see Jebby's blog about food intolerances?  I am interested to see what she learns next.

Re: the rapidity of the reaction - my reactions are very fast when it comes to gluten. I always react in less than 20 minutes, but usually less than 5 minutes.  I've been tested for allergies to wheat, rye and barley, just because it's such a fast reaction so I had wondered, but I don't have an allergy to any grain. It's all the gluten reaction.

 

So essentially, that rapid of a reaction is possible, is all I'm saying. :-)

Thank you. That makes me feel that I'm NOT crazy. Since being diagnosed, I am trying hard not to blame every single twinge and headache on gluten.  :) Ah, although most often it's the cause. Ha!

    • Isabel, You did not give out any personal information that could be traced to you.  Good job!  Just do not mention your last name or where you live.  There is a million Isabel’s out there and one is in my troop (she play water polo and the trumpet).  There an advantage to being anonymous.  Like when you are talking about barfing or the big “D”.  Some subjects you would only tell your parents or doctor because it is too embarassing.   I am just careful because I work with kids and we talk about internet safety.   Glad you like my ideas.  Other member have good tips too.  I can tell you that when I open up our salads  and our steamy thermos’ of chili at the high school football games, the surrounding people are envious!  I bake our own cookies, cupcakes and brownies and freeze them.  That way we always have something just as good at parties.  I make gluten-free goodies to share and everyone loves them.   
    • In many cases no.....I consume heavy magnesium foods like pumpkin seeds, cocoa nibs etc....and still need 2-3x the dose of magnesium recommendations. Going on more of what poster boy said. You dose magnesium to tolerance with citrate like Natural Vitality Calm you start off small partial doses and slow ramp up....it can hit you hard causing gas and D if you go to quick into it. You dose citrate to tolerance meaning you slowly up your dose til you get loose stools...then back down a bit. You should have vivid dreams with a good dosing....also if it becomes to harsh or you can not handle citrate there is Doctors Best Glycinate...it does not have the gut effects at all...but the dreams and how much it makes you relax is more more felt.   ...with this disease you can have a food intolerance or allergy crop up out of the blue....like no where. You have a autoimmune disease....celiac it effects your immune system and can make it really wonky. Like it seems to always be on guard like a sleep deprived sentry on stim packs...jumps at everything and shoots it. If you get sick, eat something odd or harsh you system might red flag it as a issue for awhile and go bonkers....keep a food diary and try a food rotation in the mean time...OH as a example to this, I was fine with chia seeds last week...I got a cold over the weekend....same bag, same brand same way....withing 30mins I now puke if I eat them...new intolerance.....I also am finding jalapenos/paprika making it sleepy tired....so I am removing them both for a few months from my diet and changing to other sources for fats/fiber and vitamin A/C til I get over that issue.....these things just happen. https://www.mindbodygreen.com/articles/are-food-sensitivities-for-life
    • Hi Isabel, Your body needs nutrients to grow.  Nutrients not absorbed well when we have celiac disease damage in our guts.   But, if you do a good job of avoiding gluten, the gut damage should heal and you will be able to absorb nutrients again. The thing to remember is celiac disease is an immune system reaction.  Immune reactions are very sensitive and just a tiny amount of gluten can get them going.   And they can last for months.  So it;s very important to avoid all gluten all the time, to keep the immune reaction down.  Keeping the immune reaction down keeps the damage down, and the healing can keep up. You may start to grow more if you can absorb nutrients better.  Some extra vitamin pills might be a good idea.  Your doctor should know.  
    • Thank you Gail for your response. Of course one should be mindful of the possibility of food allergies but I don't think that's the case with my current situations. Save for gluten containing product, everything I eat now I used to eat before with no reaction whatsoever. I think my issue is more likely to be deficiency in minerals and such.
    • Posterboy, thank you for your response!    Regarding magnesium, do you think relying on food sources like fruits, bananas in particular, is not enough? Just out of curiosity, when you started taking Magnesiums Citrate supplements, did you already consume enough fruits?
