Can it be possible that more than 20 years of being lactose intolerant could be cured by being gluten-free for less than 4 months??

 

I've been taking Lactaid enzymes for as long as I can remember. My father couldn't digest milk either, and I figured out it was milk that gave me the big D. So anytime I drank milk, ate ice cream, sour cream, cottage cheese, cream based sauces and dressings, I took a Lactaid and my digestive distress resolved. Yogurt and cheese never bothered me.

 

I will be gluten-free for 4 months next week. I started experimenting with regular milk in my coffee instead of the lactose-free kind. Felt fine. Tried a bowl of ice cream with fruit with no Lactaid. Nothing happened. Drank a glass of milk with a few cookies, no problems!!

 

Can it happen this fast? I've heard celiacs can tolerate dairy after being gluten-free for awhile, but this soon? Hey, I'm not complaining - I'll be thrilled if the lactose intolerance is gone - I'm just skeptical at how fast it happened!

That's great news! Actually, I tried dairy without Lactaid since it always caused the big D, and since going gluten-free I've had terrible issues with the opposite problem! I figured lactose might help "move things along." It hasn't, but I'm  happy to not have to worry about taking Lactaid anymore!

I'm a quick healer also but I am still dairy lite.  I'm not so sure that most Celiac's gain dairy back all that well.  I would take it easy, tonalynn, and not splurge and eat a lot of dairy at first.  Go slowly because you don't want it hitting you in the back of the head because of overindulgence.  Many Celiac's I know, including myself, have a limit to what they can eat. Sometimes, you don't know the exact tipping point either.

 

Don't get me wrong...this is very good news and shows healing is in progress but beware overindulgence!  ;)

Oh don't worry Gemini, I won't overdo it! Actually, the entire bowl of ice cream was what I was most worried about, but nothing happened. That's about as much as I want to test it, no more than that amount of dairy per day. I still think I'll keep some Lactaid handy, in case I have a dairy heavy day. ;-)

I was never lactose intolerant and was diagnosed with celiac very quickly (as opposed to those who suffer for years before definitive diagnosis). I became lactose intolerant about 8 years into being gluten free!! Giving up dairy for me was harder than gluten... cause there is NO substitute for delicious cheese and butter. The lactose intolerance seemed to disappear after about 6 months of being mostly DF and now I'm dairy light... and take an occasional Lactaid.

    • I am considering having my brother - who inherited Daddy's power woodworking tools - plane down my cutting boards and sand the edges enough so I can keep them. The spoons and soup stirring things though will have to be decorative. Breaks my heart. I've had good luck with Merle Norman cosmetics. They have a listing of things that are gluten-free that has helped me. My local store owner was able to get the list and knows what I can use and what I can't.
    • While you could very well be vitamin/mineral deficient, you could also have issues with your thyroid.  Autoimmune thyroid is common with .......autoimmune celiac disease.  Your doctor should order a full thyroid panel, including thyroid antibodies.   Your blood sugar should also be checked (autoimmune diabetes).  I am not saying you have these issues, but these AI issues are common with celiac disease.  In fact, you can develop or have more than one AI issue.   If I feel a very strong need to nap, I know my thyroid is off and my doctor should be notified.  A simple blood test usually verifies that an adjustment to my thyroid replacement is needed.   That said, you are in the healing stages of celiac disease.   Eat healthy and include plenty of fats to keep you satiated.  Try to avoid processed foods.  Make sure that gluten-free diet is varied and full of veggies.  Get plenty of rest.  Just listen to your body.  Soon you will feel much better.

You may find that some simple switches in food choices can deliver more energy and fewer spikes and crashes. This is something that receives too little attention, particularly from the medical community. It can come as a huge shock to the system and as the implications become apparent its easy to feel overwhelmed. This certainly happened to me and many others here so first do know that you're not alone. You are currently grieving believe it or not and you will be going through the stages of grief.  Second, although it may not feel it now, it WILL get better and you will adjust and adapt as you get used to the diet and start focusing on what you can still do rather than what you can't.  In the meantime, this is a good place to vent and share those feelings as they are perfectly natural and understandable and whilst not always helpful,  they are a part of you and a part of the healing process. Go easy on yourself, this is very early days. You are young, which is good news, it means you will heal sooner and you will adapt quicker and there's lots of good things on the way for you as your body gets a rest from the gluten that's been holding you back.  All the best!     • Following a gallbladder surgery, I could not get my digestive system back to normal.  After several months of constant diarrhea, I went to see the gastro dr. and told her my problems. I also mentioned that I had a sister, brother and nephew with Celiacs.  She said, "I'm almost sure that's the problem".  I, like you, did not want to go back to eating gluten so I did the gene test but it was not positive.  I learned it is not always an exact test.  It came back with Crohns which so far I have no symptoms.  The Endoscopy  indicated Hpylori, CDiff, and one other bacteria.  After I took all the meds to clear my body of these bacterias, I was still having  some symptons of diarrhea and found that I thought I was clear of all gluten but I had a long way to go. Throwing away a wooden cutting board my dad had given me, lipstick, lipgloss, makeup, handcream, plastics in the kitchen, pans that had a scratch, any item in the pantry that had any of the items with starch that may have gluten and the list goes on and on.  I'm still reading labels but I definately can tell a difference as I have eliminated more items that I had no idea were harmful.  This website has been a life-saver for me.  Thank You so much for your wealth of information.   Linda Fortson
