Hi.  I just had a series of labs done and never expected to see Celiac as a possiblity but it makes sense now. My labs show  the following

I do not understand most of it.

HLA Class II, Locu DQB*, Allele1

03:02

Same thing for Allele 2

Then it says Serolgical Equivalents:  DQ8, 8

Do these results confirm Celiac?

No, they do not. What you had done was the gene test and you do have DQ8 which is one of them. But about a third of the population has those genes but the vast majority will never present with celiac. The gene test is really used to rule OUT celiac rather than to diagnose celiac.

You need to have the celiac blood panel done & YOU MUST BE ACTIVELY EATING A GLUTEN DIET FOR ALL TESTING INCLUDING A SUBSEQUENT ENDOSCOPY or you will get false negatives.

Here's the blood panel:

Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgA
Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgG
Anti-Endomysial (EMA) IgA
Anti-Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA
Deamidated Gliadin Peptide (DGP) IgA and IgG
Total Serum IgA

Also can be termed this way:

Endomysial Antibody IgA
Tissue Transglutaminase IgA
GLIADIN IgG
GLIADIN IgA
Total Serum IgA
Deamidated Gliadin Peptide (DGP) IgA and IgG

Your PCP or any doc can order the labs for you. If the blood work comes back with even 1 positive, then you get sent for an endoscopy where they take 4-6 biopsies & if those are positive then you are pronounced celiac.

What are your symptoms and who ordered the gene test for you?

I am sorry not sure if I am replying correctly or not.  This HLA panel was ordered by my sleep specialist attempting to rule out Narcolepsy but instead this was what was resulted. For years I have had just about every symptom listed for Celiac (after reading up on it yesterday) but when I would tell my rheumatologist about it he would say it was my Lupus.  I have dealing with severe Iron definciency anemia for years have had colonoscopies which have been fine so they just have ignored the cause of my anemia saying secondary to chronic autoimmune illness.  I am sick and tired of feeling sick and tired.  I am actually hopeful that I may be onto to something that could be fixed with my diet.  For years I have avoided pasta on my own b/c the abdominal pain is too much, wheat bread gives horrible pain as does oatmeal, barley soup pratically puts me on the bathroom floor for days.  Bread my stomach bloats so bad....then I have the anemia, Iron def anemia etc.  So this was more of an incidental finding I beileve.  I was just doing my own research wanting to make sure I was reading the panel correctly.  Thank you for your help and input too!

oh ok. Then u need to press on and have the correct celiac bloodwork done. And if positive start the gluten-free diet as soon as possible.

good luck!

Hi finnsmomma,

Yep, stay on gluten until all celiac testing is completed.  You don't need to eat a lot of gluten.  1/2 slice of bread daily is enough.

You may find your symptoms are less if you stop eating dairy for awhile.  Celiac can make it hard to digest dairy.

Peppermint tea can help with bloating and gas.  Aspirin can help with pain.

Welcome to the forum finnsmomma! :)

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?

I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?
    • mishyj
Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.
