Looking for a GI specialist in Colorado. Help!

I live in Wyoming and I'm looking for a new gastro. in Colorado. I'm right on the border so I'm fine commuting. I have a gastro. in Denver but I'm not thrilled with his office and I don't feel like he and I really "get" each other, despite the fact that I think he's a good doctor. I know that not all GI docs know a lot about Celiac so I'm hoping to find someone who does. I'm not having a ton of luck looking online. Anyone have any input?

I like Dr Rebecca Dunphy in Fort Collins but her appointments are 5 months out.

I've heard of Dr Dunphy, but wasn't sure if she knew much about Celiac. Fort Collins is actually really close to me. About 60 miles away. Maybe I should give her a call?

also, are you in Fort Collins? I just ask because we go there a lot and I never know where to eat except at Beau Jo's :) I might have to bug you for pointers!

I'm not far enough along to eat out. My Celiac numbers only go down on a liquid diet. I recently went to Aimes dedicated gluten free Bakery in Longmont when I needed to gain weight. I highly recommend their chocolate eclair and macaroons. The cheesecake and quiche are good as well. I feel like teaching them how to make a proper egg sandwich though.

I used to go to Outback Steakhouse on Harmony in Fort Collins before diagnosis. I can't have spices and whenever I said 'no seasoning' on my steak they would ask if it was an allergy. So I think they would be good for gluten free.

I don't know what constitutes knowing much about celiac. After my first visit to Dr Dunphy for slight nausea she sent me for blood tests, told me my celiac numbers strongly showed I had celiac, did the endoscopy a few weeks later and confirmed it. She's very intelligent. I'm extremely low maintenance with doctors  and I don't know what regular people expect in an appointment.

Hi fbmb!

It would be a bit of a drive for you, but I like Dr Baker in Colorado Springs.  2 of his associates specialize in celiac, but when I called to schedule my first appointment I just needed someone and got the Dr with the 1st available appointment.  Anyway, he's been great.  I really do like him as a Dr.

Tessa, if you do start eating out in Fort Collins, I would love recommendations as well!  My son is eyeing CSU for college in 2 years.

GACS (Gastroenterology Assocs of Colo Spgs). I had Dr. Sue Mitchell, who I'm very grateful to for thinking to biopsy while doing a totally separate procedure. Had been undiagnosed for 8 years.  Very knowledgeable.  Thankful.

My boys were at CSU.  Colorado is a great place.  Just off the top of my head - Beau Jo's, Lark Burger, Blue Agave ? I think that's the name, Austins in Old Town, Snooze, Outback, Scrumpys Cider - they have expanded so I am not sure about food, but great cider.  CSU has. gluten-free dining hall and had great gluten-free practices before they added that- my boys checked it out.  There are some other places- check find me gluten-free .  If they have lots of great reviews over the years - they probably are good.

Edit- there was an Italian Place in Old Town that was great.  If I remember its name or any others, I'll add

Bisettis Italian in Old Town

Thanks for all the recommmedations, Kareng!  I'll be in Ft. Collins in October and I was just starting to research places to eat.  I don't need a doctor but I need to eat.  :)

Just Ft. C?  There are other places like a Brazilian steak house and other places....I just didn't need to

try them all and new places have popped up.

We will be based in Ft. Collins as we are visiting family but will not be spending all our time with them.  We'll do day trips into the mountains so we can hike and maybe hit Boulder so that should be easy.  I already found Blue Agave on-line and their menu looks great...lot of options.  I found it pretty easy to eat there the last time I went but that was 12 years ago so things have changed!  I really want to drive Loveland Pass but we can pack a lunch from Whole Foods for that.

There will be lots of places to try.  Snooze has several locations for breakfast.  There is a gluten-free crepe place in Vail on the mail street.  There is a great place called Vinny's in Frisco.  I have been told there is a new Cider place in Longmont.  IN golden, there is a gluten-free brewery.  Open Original Shared Link  MOd Market is in several locations - the Flat Iron Steak is soooo good!  Everyone had something they liked.  IN Estees PArk , Notchtop,  is a great lunch/breakfast place with a great understanding of gluten-free. There are many others that I have heard good things about, just haven't tried.

Funny enough, Snooze provides breakfast for the B & B we are staying in.  They used to cook their own breakfast for guests but now have Snooze do it. I was a bit nervous as you order the day before and they bring it over at breakfast so I would not have contact with the people preparing my food but I guess they have a lot of requests for gluten free so have experience with it.  I am bringing my NIMA just in case but if you have had good luck with them, then that makes me more comfortable.  I never was glutened on my first trip there and I was only gluten-free for 6 months by then.

Thanks for the Estes Park recommendation.....that's where I like to hike!

It sounds like you're dealing with a complex situation, and I can understand how frustrating it must be not to have a clear answer. Gut health can indeed play a significant role in various aspects of our well-being, including hair health.

I have found similar benefits from thiamine. I was diagnosed with celiac at 16 and never really recovered despite strict gluten and dairy free diet and no detectable antibodies on checkup bloodworks. I’ve tried stopping the b1 but start to feel bad again- I wanted my doctors to do more extensive testing for the different thiamine transporters and enzymes which would be a better indication if I was deficient or dependent on it but everyone dismisses it (there are know genetic mutations where you need to take it daily for life). I have looked into Thiamine Responsive Megablast Anemia and I have a lot of the more mild symptoms of the disease that manifest when thiamine isn’t given to the patient such as optic neuritis… I just find the parallels interesting. i think that celiacs could be a side issue of inflammation that resulted from vitamin deficiencies. I was eating a lot of sugar leading up to my diagnosis and since eating gluten free didn’t make me feel much better, I’m wondering if this was more the underlying issue (sugar heavily depletes b1). I usually take 1.5g thiamine a day.

Thank you for your welcome and reply.  Yes I've been carefully reading labels looking for everything in bold and have been amazed by what I have seen. However Heinz tomato and basil soup is wheat free so I m thinking I already have ulcers?  The acid could be causing the pain . My pain always starts in one place then follows the same route through me . GP confirmed that is the route of our digestive system.  So much pain from stabbing to tearing. If I throw in milk with lactose it's horrific.  Many years of it now, won't go into details but been seeing a consultant for a supposedly different problem . Wondering what damage has been done over the years. Many thanks for your reply. Wishing you the very best.

Welcome to the forum community, @Fluka66! Did you realize that the vast majority of all canned soups use wheat starch as a thickener, including such common commodities as Campbell's tomato soup?

Hello. Any help would really steady my nerves right now. I realised recently that certain food left me in agonising pain so eliminated from my diet. I also have a swollen lymph node. My very caring Dr did some blood tests and I went back the other day to see another equally caring Dr . She looked at the test results one result has come back with something wrong. It came very fast so I'm afraid I didn't catch what it was. Anyway the urgent referral to ENT. She did say as I had already eliminated gluten it wouldn't say anything on the results and neither Drs nor I were prepared to reintroduce gluten . I've just had some tomato soup and again in agony only thinking this must have aggravated maybe existing problems. Does anyone know what I'm facing now ? My swollen lymph node , pain when eating gluten and lactose and I'm assuming the acidity of tomatoes triggering pain.  I'm trying to stay calm and to be honest I've been in intolerable pain at times rendering me unable to stand up straight but I've always just got on with it . Guess I'm reaching out and would really appreciate any wise or unwise words at this stage. Wishing you all the very best as you live with this illness. Fluka66
