Glutened from pizza boxes?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is a silly question, but is it possible to get glutened from carrying closed pizza boxes containing regular wheat pizza? As part of my office job, I occasionally have to carry delivered pizzas into conference rooms (holding them for only 1-2 minutes). There's not necessarily any visible crumbs on the boxes, and I wash my hands immediately after. I just wasn't sure if the proximity to the wheat or the pizza smell could cause anything. Any insight is appreciated!

P.S. Even after being diagnosed with Celiac for almost 9 years, I still have questions like these!

Smell can cause anxiety in some of us, and inhaled flour can cause a reaction. My concern would be the flour on the box. Consider a pizza parlor kitchen....consider the flour everywhere and how flour can stay air borne for hours. Now that box, probably has a light coating of flour on the outside. Not much and not really enough to be overly concerned about. But make sure you do not like hold it above your head or at chest level where you might inhale some. Also wash your hands after hands after handling it.
Seriously not much to worry about but just some extra precautions.

Since you are washing your hands right afterwards you shouldn't have an issue. Are you asking because your having symptoms of mystery glutenings?

I can tell you that last week, I picked up and delivered 30 boxes of Costco pizza to a hungry marching band.  I lived!  Seriously, just wash your hands after handling.  Ennis is right.  Do not take a big sniff of the boxes in case there is any residual flour.  It took days for my van to air out and I did lay some old beach towels to protect my interior as normally, gluten is not allowed!
