When Can I Eat Dairy/lactose/casein

Since being diagnosed in February, I've been limiting my dairy/lactose....I am not lactose intolerent, so I have not been strictly adhering to a 100% lactose-free diet :) . Rather, I've tried to limit my lactose intake. For example, earlier in the diet, I had a big bowl of straberry icecream (made by Haagen Dazs, so I know it was gluten-free)...and I got sick that night. Therefore, I started eating a soy icecream, which tastes okay. I don't avoid all dairy, but avoid large quantities of dairy whenever I can. I don't dare to eat a whole bowl of icecream to find out if I'm okay with dairy now -- I still have symptoms...in case that is a sign of whether or not dairy is okay -- I know all Celiacs are different, but how long did you or would you recommend staying off dairy/lactose? Thanks.

If you're not caseine sensitive, you might try using 'lactaid' supplements when you consume dairy and/or lactaid milk instead of regular milk. I learned I was lactose intolerant about 10 years ago and have used "lactaid" sucessfully every since. ;) I sure wish someone would have suggested gluten intolerance back then. :o 'Sorry I couldn't answer your original question about how long to avoid lactose ... I just started avoiding gluten 9 weeks ago. :huh:

I have been gluten-free since Nov.,03 and lactose -free for 5 months.

Since I relly started to notice a difference in my physical problems, ie,

have lost 10lbs and am almost totally pain free, I thought I would

try dairy again, so I had some Yoplait yogurt yesterday and began experiencing

"brain fog", which is enough to say..no way, not again. I haven't been

tested so I can't tell what part of dairy is bothering me. Perhaps I will

later on down the line, I haven't tried the Lactaid because i'm feeling so

well that I don't want any more challenges. I found that I can live without

milk, I use soy or goat's milk and can eat small amts of hard cheese, mostly

Cheddar. Hope this helps and I hope you are feeling better. :D

Good to know....I've been lactose-limited for almost 5 months, as well....I haven't avoided dairy altogether, but, like I said in my post, avoided large quantities.....thank you for sharing your experiences with it...I guess I'll be avoiding it longer than I initially expected to....thanks again.

As for my symptoms.....still there. I had another episode of cramping and vomiting.....ten times less severe, but still there....as long as they're less harsh, though, I can deal with this for now.

Anyhow, his doc still wants him off dairy (we were soooo bummed). It isn't just an issue of healing; premature exposure to dairy can -- sometimes -- set off an actual allergy to milk (casein or lactose) that you didn't previously have. Or that's my understanding of what she said. A summer without ice cream. Ick! :) We're going to buy stock in Philly Swirl !

Yikes! Thank you for the warnings.....is it bad for me to be consuming any dairy? Like I said, I eliminated bulk amounts of obvious dairy...like creamcheese. Is it bad to have some dairy in my diet?

If you're casein intolerant, or allergic, then yes, any dairy would be a bad idea. If you're just lactose intolerant, then probably not, even if you don't use lactaid. (It varies by person.) It depends on the root cause... (I'm having trouble figuring out dairy too, but haven't worked real hard at it... eliminating all casein will be tough for me! ;-) )

After being 6 months diary free, my lactalbumine went negative, my caseine IgA dropped half down and caseine IgG remained almost the same as before. So, perhaps one year diary free and my antibodies will be ok. Just to give you an idea. I'll have another bloodwork next week, so I'll see more then.

    • Yeah I tend to have Mr. Hyde come out with gluten exposure. Honestly he was not present with my last few minor issues....anyway. Plenty of fluids, bone broths if she can do them. whole food soups. Avoid processed foods, have more whole foods and greens. Green and herbal teas can help. NOTE there are some enzymes that can help shorten gut issues but I think your daughter is past that point so lets focus on the mood. I find foods that promote melatonin, serotonin, and happy feelings work great. I would suggest hemp but recently there has been a huge industry issue with finding a safe gluten free powder form as most are CCed now. Pumpkin Seed protein from Oregon Seed Oil company can help with mood and is rich in nutrients. I might also suggest a B vitamin complex and perhaps a magnesium complex.....NOW these are not confirmed by check out Natural Vitality Calm for kids see if it might help. I use Liquid health Stress & Energy and Neurological support to help with my mental state, but that company makes some other stuff that might address our daughters issues more, as a liquid you just mix in juice, water, or tea it is great for getting supplementation. http://www.liquidhealthinc.com/products/
    • My daughter (6) was recently glutened by a friend of the family.  She gave her a drink that didn't have gluten in it but was made at a factory that has gluten contamination.   She recently just started a brand new school because we hadn't diagnosed her allergies yet and she has severe behavior problems when she is glutened and she wore out her welcome at Catholic School.  We were keeping her gluten free and her behaviors were wonderful.  Like I said she started the new school and was doing great unbeknownst to me she was glutened and I did not know.   She had a terrible week at school punching people kicking people hit and kick the principal. She is wet the bed every night for 8 days.  Is there any way to flush this out of her system faster.  Normally when she gets glutened it's a 10 to 14 day process.  It hasn't happened in a long time..... Right now I can't even send her to school.
    • I'm so sorry. Nursing school is rigorous enough on top of all this stress.  And, kudos to you for cooking regularly even in school.  I've been through a lot of school and I never managed that.  I can see how it feels hopeless to try and change your roommate's behavior - almost like an insurmountable hurdle! After reading all of these followup posts, I was doing some more thinking. One idea  is posting an add for a gluten free roommate next semester. The more I talk to people the more people I meet that are gluten free. Maybe there is someone out there like you. And one thing I know about medical people is that they are not embarrassed to discuss medical problems (even the ones they should be embarrassed to discuss  )  Put the word out there in your class - find out if there are people doing something similar - maybe they are gluten-free for health or mood or diabetes. And look for people that are low carb, Whole 30, Ketogenic or similar - those folks don't eat gluten either - they just don't call themselves "gluten free".  Maybe you don't have to be trapped in your current situation.  I eat a lot of eggs and beans which are cheap ways to get protein without meat. Also, (and I know this might be controversial) but there is a study out there, that says that celiac patients that get neurotic about avoiding gluten and focus on only eating certified etc  have a worse quality of life (and no improvement in control of their celiac) compared to people who are not as neurotic and eat gluten free foods (but don't only eat certified). That may be a whole separate post - but it's worth considering. I'm one of the neurotic types but I'm thinking about how to be not so crazy!   I wish you the best!
    • "Any Coeliac will tell you the most awkward time of the day for them is lunch" Ya just can't make stuff like this up. Lunchtime is awkward?
    • Shouldn't they be studying why celiacs who have been gluten-free for a year are still seropositive and having moderate to severe symptoms?  It sounded like the pill was suppposed to be taken with meals that might have cc ? So why would they do a study where it's given with gluten-free meals? What would it be breaking down if the meal has no gluten? How would it help? I'm confused. But it's been a long day. update Just read some drug company is going to be selling these pills in 2023. I hope by then the poor celiacs still having bad problems are able to figure out why they are still hurting instead of having to take super expensive pills.
