Those Of You That Suffer With Diarrhea

I have read a lot on this message board about people with diarrhea, whether it is because of gluten intolerance or not. In the past, I have read a lot on the Web MD website about "Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I've read there many messages on how much calcium can help with diarrhea. First of all, calcium can be very constipating, so you have to be very careful. Linda (the writer of the message in Web MD) has recommended, and I have tried it, to take the Caltrate with Vitamin D and minerals. Now Linda, she takes a full caplet three times a day, one with each meal. Now if I took that much calcium, I wouldn't poop for a month! But I do take 1/2 or 1/4 of a pill once a day and it does seem to help. Her studies show that only a certain % of the calcium is absorbed into the system, and the rest of it can help "bind" up the excess bile and liquids in your system to help form a firmer bowel movement.

She has nothing to do with gluten intolerance, she was diagnosed with IBS and nothing seemed to help her, she started taking calcium as a supplement and it has helped the diarrhea part of her IBS. She is leading a more active life with her family and friends.

I still get diarrhea once in awhile, but I think it is because I am not watching my gluten/wheat intolerance well enough, but I don't get near the urgency of having to find a bathroom in ten seconds or else!

I'm fairly new to the boards, just started writing some items this past month. I do hope this helps some of you, if you have any questions, go over into WebMD and look into the "Irritable Bowel Syndrome" and find her articles. I have communicated a lot with her, and she seems to have something on this.

A lot of people have good results with this, in fact Caltrate makes a product called "Colon Care" or something like that which is nothing more than megadoses of calcium.

When I tried this approach, it didn't work too well. It did bind things up a bit but did nothing for the cramps and spasms, so it only made things worse. But that was before I went gluten-free, so perhaps it would be more effective now that I'm on a gluten-free diet.

I didn't know that calcium had that effect, but I take Caltrate with Vit. D because I'm lactose intolerant and am afraid I don't get enough calcium through my diet. I like the chewables and I have realized that taking them does help with the "D" issue... didn't know it was the calcium though! Thank you for the info :)

I went out and bought Caltrate with Vitamin D today. Will start taking it three times a day, with each meal - I will post to let you know what happens.....

:) Hi BamBam, I have to try your recommendation about calcium. I am up in years and should have extra calcium in my diet anyway, but if I can "kill two birds with one stone" (and not have to worry about where the next closest bathroom is), I will be so happy. I really hope this works for me.

Okay, yesterday was the first day that I took Caltrate - I took three, 1/2 hour after each meal.....

I woke up at 1 a.m. with excruiating pain, spend the next four hours going to the bathroom, (yep, still diarrhea.....), and laying on the floor with my heating pad rocking myself trying to control the pain. It was just like a knife going through my body, literally taking my breath away...... I was this )( close to dring myself to the hospital.... finally at 5 a.m., it started to subside..... I guess my system can't handle more than one Caltrate a day.... I know for sure that there was nothing in question about what I ate yesterday.....

Oh well, back to the drawing board.......

Hi Karen, Reading your experience certainly brought back some bad times. :( I think I would start off really slow, maybe 1/2 to 1 pill a day, then gradually work yourself up to 3 a day. I have been taking the calcium (not Caltrate) and I have been seeing a great improvement, but then I only take 1 pill a day.

Oh Karen I am sorry. I would wait a couple of days and try 1/2 a pill once a day, then twice a day if it isn't enough. I don't think I could tolerate more than 1 to 1 1/2 a day.

    • I don't know who is claiming lots of uk gluten-free breads are contaminated? It's certainly news to me! I think it is possible to get a slight reaction to gluten-free breads and pastas, especially if you eat a lot. as I understand it they can contain a very small amount of gluten which can add up to more than the acceptable daily amount for a celiac.  There is a cumulative effect in other words. I try to eat them more as an occasional treat rather than as a daily staple.  I also find some agree with me more than otherss, but there could be other factors at play than gluten content there. For example the other additives, xantham gum content etc. I typically mix and match but regularly have genius, asda own brand, Udis buns, m and s, Newgate sourdough, those wraps which I forget the brand but are at most supermarkets., without major issues.  Hope this of help, I will look next time I'm shopping for more brand names I've eaten            
    • Hey everyone, I need some advice. After being diagnosed with celiac disease, I have been eating just rice and potatoes for carbs and its really hard to make up the calories and I am losing weight fast. I know my local supermarkets (Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda) have many gluten free breads and pastas, but I read from this forum that even though they say gluten-free they might be cross contaminated. So I really need some advice on the actual products that are 100% gluten-free that you guys use that I can get in the United Kingdom. I am really desparate here and really need some recommendations that you guys know 100% are gluten-free and/or use yourself. Thanks alot )
    • I agree with the others that this looks like a positive celiac disease diagnosis (and I didn't really see anything that indicates a weak positive). What I have never seen before is the "celiac cascade." After thinking on what that is for several minutes, I concluded it is an indication of positivity based on the tests. Is that right? I have no idea, can someone explain in clear English or point to a clear web site? Thanks! Plumbago
    • hey i've been vegetarian for 8 years and gluten free for almost a year. its difficult since they are kind of opposites. i actually just noticed the advertisemnts from the cancer counil here is australia now has meat listed next to alchol, cigarettes and the sun. a few years ago when i read about it, it seemed hot dogs and super processed meats like salami were the only issue. which i only remember when i see a sausage sizzle to raise money for cancer lol  but it surprised me that now the guidelines are including red meat as well and smaller amounts. https://www.cancercouncil.com.au/1752/cancer-prevention/diet-exercise/nutrition-diet/other-foods-nutrients/meat-and-cancer-3/ so i would reccomend easing into it and slowly replace meat with alternatives to make sure you are getting enough protein etc get your iron and b12 levels checked every now and then. buffalo cauliflower and eggplant schnitzels are two of my favorites. you can also make alot of cheeses and sauces out of nuts and tofu. i also eat alot of falafel, hommus and tahini. i can send you some links to recipes if you like
    • I'm going to guess the additive effect of a few months of mystery CC glutenings (since resolved), plus heavy training load. The last time I had my antibodies/iron checked in Feb 2016, both were good. Since diagnosis to that point, I'd been taking iron supplements only sporadically, but stopped altogether at that point as my ferritin was quite high (hemochromatosis runs in my family, so some concern about taking too much iron). Unfortunately, my DH is only speculative - I've seen a dermatologist in an attempt to get it biopsied/prescribed Dapsone, but she was convinced it had to be acne as it "did not look exactly like in her textbook." My protestations that this was because it she was looking at the remains of a rash that I'd picked the heck out of were sadly ignored. I do have a GI appointment coming up in a few weeks though.
