I saw where someone on this board said that Hellman's Mayonnaise is gluten-free and it also says that it is on their site BUT Gluten Guard claims that it has gluten because it has disodium.

Does anyone know for sure which it is and if disodium is a bad ingredient.

Disodium is not an ingredient. It is the first word of a two word ingredient. What is the second word?

I use Best Foods (same as Hellman's West of the Rockies) without issue. It is a Unilever company and I thought that is one of the companies that clearly labels.

Gluten Guard has disodium listed as what causes it to be listed as containing gluten.

On the label it says calcium disodium EDTA.

Hellman's Mayo is listed on the Gluten Free Product List for 2006, as gluten free. :)

Hellman's Mayo is safe.

What they (the gluten guard) is probably referring to is "Disodium Wheatgermamido Peg-2 Sulfosuccinate" not just disodium. That was listed on celiac.com's list of forbidden ingredients. http://www.celiac.com/st_prod.html?p_prodi...-31106385914.04

From reading your list of sensitivities I see that we've got a lot of the same food issues. I'm also unable to eat tomatoes, potatoes and pretty much anything fresh.

Did you ever consider IBS as a cause?

Umm... 'Calcium disodum' should not be on that list. It's not a compound, it's a typo. There should be a third word that tells you what the entire compound is. There are many compounds that could start with "Calcium disodium", and some of them are probably not safe.

(I have a degree in Chemistry.)

Thanks, Katherine. Maybe you could email/PM Scott (admin) since he is the "owner" of the lists and discuss that with him to update it! Every little it helps.

cycler-IBS is often just a term that they use when they don't know what is causing the problems. I was told I had IBS over 2 years ago...turns out I don't, I had Celiac. They gave me all kinds of other diagnoses---none of which I had. Go figure.

Unfortunately, I wish it were that simple for me. But thank you for the suggestion.

What in the heck is gluten guard???????

Hellmans is without question gluten-free. In fact, in 5 years I've nver found a mayo that has gluten.

I was told by someone that IBS stands for: I Be Stumped. I believe that to be true, if a doctor doesn't know, he tells you IBS so you have something to start with. I also was diagnosed with IBS 25 yrs ago.

Yep. Another version is "I'm Basically Stumped"....

BTW, I told this to my doctor last week when I was in for a physical. She had an intern with her and she was explaining the differences between me (quite the study example I am!!! LOL!) and the person they saw before me who had IBS. I said "Oh, we in the celiac world call that the "I'm Basically Stumped" diagnosis" and she cracked up laughing - she thought that was great!

Gluten guard is a downloadable program to your computer or PDA which lists gluten free products or what is in a product for them to determine that it isn't gluten free. There is a free version and one that you buy but there are too many mistakes for it to be worth it.

    • In comes SIBO Girl to join Captain NCGS   One other thought:  have you looked at the possibility of having small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)?  The pain you are feeling may be related to bloating pressure, which, if it is caused by SIBO, would continue after the removal of gluten because lots of foods feed the bacteria in your small intestines once they have become established where they don't belong.   One of the things that is confusing about celiac/gluten sensitivity is that is causes so many other things. Anemia, for example. Remove the gluten you feel better, but you may still need to treat the anemia to make those anemia-specific symptoms go away. Same thing with B vitamin supplimentation (nod to Professor Pellagra) and some of the neurological symptoms. Same with bacteria in the small intestines.  Guten affects my daughter's nerves. These affect motility, which affect her body's ability to prevent bacterial overgrowth. The removal of gluten was key to eliminating most of her symptoms. But removing excessive fermentable carbs was important for the SIBO to be kept at bay. That's the Fodmap component (but not JUST Fodmaps).  Going grain free has been amazing for her health.   Here is the best website for SIBO. Just something to consider. http://www.siboinfo.com/symptoms.html Incidentaly, SIBO is very common in folks with gluten sensitivities. I personally think that everyone diagnose with celiac disease should also be tested for SIBO just like they test for vitamin deficiencies. It would probably greatly help in recovery if you treated that condition as well. 
    • No, I was gluten free both times I had a scope.  They found eosinaphalic esophagitis and most recently ulcers.  The ulcers were the cause of the nausea apparently. i feel pretty good most of the time if I take all my vitamins, avoid sugar and carbs and lean toward the AIP diet.  I then have a corn tortilla or popcorn with my dinner and it's enough carbs for good sleep.

    • Hi Victoria I hope you get some replies as some of these people are still on this board.   Is this something you are suffering from? I thought I'd just let you know that I had this very badly at diagnosis, and it went on and on for some time. I had pelvic u/s and also a precautionary sigmoidoscopy - all was clear.  In the end what really helped was giving up all dairy for a few weeks.  It pretty much stopped - I missed my dairy though, so reintroduced it. But it was good to know it was bloating that was causing it.   But the pain was also due to something else. I still get pain to the left of my groin/pelvis when I've been carrying heavy bags and doing a lot of walking.  I have an issue with my sacroiliac joint.  Look it up - it is a common problem for coeliacs.  The pain transfers to the front of the groin, and also to the buttocks.  If I touch my left sacroiliac joint now it is really tender.  But with it I have an accompanying feeling of pain and pressure in my left groin/pelvic area, which reminds me of the time when I was expecting a baby , a simliar type of pressure.   I hope you hear from others but maybe this will help?
