Soy Problem Or Too Much Margaine?

I wasn't sure where this should go, think it fit a few areas.. so I went with coping. Sorry if bad! =)

Okay, I found Shedd's Willow Run Soybean Margarine on a like two different sites for gluten-free/CF diets.. and looking at what's in it, didnt' see any problems. So got it! Been using it for awhile now, maybe.. errm 3-4 weeks?

Anyway, last Monday night, then Tuesday night.. it felt like I was having my usual reaction to diary. Though my body could react to other things in the same way, perhaps.. lol.

The only thing I could think of that could have caused this, was the margarine. Since I ended up haveing a lot of it Sunday and Monday at dinner. Sunday, gluten-free "buttered" noddles, and corn on the comb with it too. Monday, salt potatoes dipped it (sooo yummy). So I'm thinking maybe I have a problem with Soy?

But.. my mom said maybe I just had too much margarine for my system to handle. Seems pausible too?

I did call Shedd up, lady was real nice. Didn't sound like there was any cross contamination issues.. but.. it didn't feel we were entirely on the same wave length. So not sure.

Another odd thing is.. well, odd.. but good. Since last sunday, it feels like I may be finally making improvements on the diet! Which would be great. Though been feeling worse too at the same time, kinda.. that's the odd part. And I'm thinking if I have problems with Soy, I shouldn't be improving? lol

Oh well, so question.. anyone know of a gluten-free/CF Soy milk? I think the best way to find out if soy is bad, is to just drink a nice big glass and see what happens.

Soooo hoping maybe it was just too much margarine for my system to take. I'd cry if soy was bad. And the Shedd's Willow Run Soybean Margarine.. ugh.. it tastes like butter to me.. it's so yummy, LOL. Though could be contaminated too.. maybe, I dunno. Soy test first, then we'll see where to go from there.

Okay, somewhat asking questions, somewhat whining. =D

Silk is gluten-free/CF. You might try eliminating soy for a few days, then adding it back in with a vengance to see if it's bothering you.

Have you thought about corn? I can't eat it. It is a grain, isn't it? I ussually have a little different symtoms from eating corn than gluten. I ussually itch. Just an idea.

After eliminating gluten, I discovered I have similar responses to corn, soy bean , and peanut products - this in additon to lactose/casien intollerance. Even the small amount in the completely lactose free margarins make me sick. I use olive oil for all cooking and am trying to eliminate the need for anything else. I have not figured out how to bake without it though so right now I am trying to do without.

Alexolua: My gastrointestinal 'soy' symptoms are just like my dairy symptoms, except less severe and shorter in duration. Also I don't get the sinus and regularity symptoms with soy like I do with dairy. My gluten reaction symptoms are definitely different from dairy in duration, intensity and type of gastrointestinal pain. So I agree with all the previous posts: abstain from soy for a while and then test with soy milk. You probably won't need much after you have abstained to have a reaction, so just buy a small container for your test. ;)

Well I tried testing it out, and unfortunately my body doesn't want to be helpful!!

Burdee, I actually drank a TON of soy milk, hehe.

But.. I'm not sure if I'm having a reaction or not. If I am, it's nothing at all like I had to the Soybean Margarine. Not nearly as bad. Which doesn't make sense, since if I have a problem with soy, a ton should enduce a worse reaction, right? o.O

Seems mostly like some cramping, gassiness.. and I stayed up really late last night to gauge things, and it just went away.. had no problem sitting here at the computer. The Soybean Margarine reaction I got wouldn't have allowed me to stay here for hours with no problem. I would have felt an urge to go poo poo quite a bit.. even if nothing came out! lol

And since I'm still having lots of symptons.. despite the Gluten-free Casein-free diet, I may not even be having any reaction at all! Ugh.

So, I guess.. try to avoid soy again for a bit, drink more soy milk.. and see if the same things happen.

Maybe the Soybean Margarine might have some casein in it? Or maybe, I had too much of it for my system to handle. Cuz I'd guess that stuff is quite greasy!

I do think my reaction to nuts and casein is about the same though. Gluten reactions? Eh.. dunno. Gluten wise, my reaction was just a slow worsening health.. lol. Not sure what the reaction is now. Haven't tried testing it.

Maybe I'll need an uber-strict diet.. then try adding things in. Ugh!

my soy reaction is a combination of my gluten (stabbing tummy pains) and casein (ridiculous headache) reactions.

I only figured this out after suddenly adding a bunch of soy filled gluten-free food into my diet... ie soy at every meal for a few days and ending up feeling terrible, and then taking it out again and feeling better. Before this "soy binge", I was eating soy every once in a while and sometimes feeling bad after, sometimes not.

Good luck figuring it out, try to be patient with it all.

Alex: I wanted to share more of my 'soy' experience and how that convinced me I have soy problems. OK, I already said I substituted a LOT of different soy products when I learned I couldn't have dairy. Even without dairy or gluten I had symptoms which strongly resembled my dairy symptoms. So I went off soy for a week or so. However, I really thought I would 'get over' the soy problem after a short period, so I kept trying small amounts of soy after every few weeks, like a canola based margarine with a tiny bit of soy which gave me just as intense reactions. Then I tried a gluten-free/CF chocolate with a small amount of soy a few weeks later ... same reaction. Then I consumed a snack bar with a VERY tiny amount of soy another few weeks later ... same reaction. I'm convinced now. ;)

I suspect your reactions of cramping and gassiness were 'intolerance' reactions. My soy reaction was NEVER as intense as my dairy or my gluten reaction. Since I really want my intestines to heal, I regard even mild versions of my symptoms as signals to avoid that ingredient for awhile. Also reading Ron Hoggan's comments (in 'Dangerous Grains') about gluten, dairy and soy being 'diabetogenic foods' and my family history of diabetes (father, grandmother, greatgrandmother, etc.) influenced my decision to avoid soy until I feel healthy for six months or so.

Burdee, I actually had what I'd call my normal reaction.. Tuesday night!! Argh. Had the Soy on Sunday.. so maybe it was just really delayed, and the things I felt before hand, were added.

Though I was an idiot and had something Monday night that might have containned traces of nuts too.. lol.

So, think I just need to really eliminate everything, and try the challenges.. ugh. Though I have been having foods with soy in them, without any real reaction either.. like a cookie here or there. But maybe that's enough to slow the healing too, even if I don't notice anything different.

But I would like to start feeling better already!! So.. guess it might be harder than the ol' gluten-free/CF diet.. =)

    • Hi Stephanie, I'm also from the UK, I've found this site more helpful than anything we have!  As already mentioned above, in my experience it could depend on what and where you were drinking. Gluten free food and drink isn't always (not usually) 100% gluten free as you may know, maybe you have become more sensitive to even a trace of gluten that is probably in gluten free food/drink. Is it possible you have a problem with corn, particularly high fructose corn syrup that is in a lot of alcoholic drinks? This was a big problem for me and the only alcoholic drinks I can tolerate are William Chase vodka and gin. I contacted the company last year and all their drinks are 100% gluten and corn free, made the old fashioned way with no additives, so maybe try their products if you like the occasional drink and see how you get on. If you drink out, not many pubs sell their products but I know Wetherspoons do and smaller wine bars may too. l was never a spirit drinker but I must say their products are absolutely lovely! Very easy on a compromised gut too considering it's alcohol. I second the suggestion on seeing a natural health practitioner. I've recently started seeing a medical herbalist, as I've got nowhere with my now many food intolerances since going gluten free last year and I've noticed a difference in my health already. 
    • Sorry for the very late reply and thanks for the replies, I didn't get a notification of any. In case anyone else comes across this and has been wondering the same as I was, I did try a vegetable broth and I did react to it in the same way as if I'd eaten the vegetables.  As for the candida, I've been using coconut oil and am seeing a medical herbalist for this and leaky gut. It's only been a few weeks but I've noticed an improvement all round.
    • What did you drink and where did you drink it?   NOTE if you drink something at a bar using their glasses your asking for trouble BEER IS EVERYWHERE in most bars and a CC hell.   If it was at home and a non grain based liqour then I would be really concerned that it might just be alcohol. I personally can not really drink much of anything any more. I love rum, and I cook with it sometimes in sautes. I also have rum extract/butter rum extract/and rum emulsion I use in shakes, homemade keto pudding/ mixed into dishes. and even add some to drink to give it a rum flavor lol.
    • I can only think of two things, 1 something you put on your potato was contaminated like the butter container could have crumbs in it or something like that as mentioned before, and you could be having a reaction to dairy or what ever was put in it.......IF it was just plain potato and you reacted with bloating and cramping you might have a carb issues, tad rare and most associated with additional auto immune diseases but could be in which case a diet of fats and protein would be your answer much like it is for me now days. What all have you eaten in the privous 8 hours including beverages, condiments, spices and foods?
    • They are gluten-free.  Did you use butter that might have gluten crumbs on it?  For me , it takes more than 2 hours to feel the effect of gluten- maybe something you ate before?  Maybe  stomach virus?
