I just heard on The View this morning that Elizabeth Hasselbeck has celiac disease. She mentioned it, explained it briefly as they were closing, and Rosie told viewers to Google it and they will have a segment on it next week. That's great!

I just heard (in the closing moments of the show) Rosie O'Donnell say that the reason Elizabeth never eats on the show is because she has Celiac Disease and they will be doing a whole segment on it next week.

Elizabeth herself said she has Celiac, and described it as an allergy (!) to wheat, oats, barley and rye. She also said something about being able to drink gluten-free beer.

Can't wait to see how they handle the subject.

Hey, Patti...you beat me to it! I heard Elizabeth mention something about gluten-free beer and was shocked to actually hear her say she has Celiac! Can't wait to see what The View segment on Celiac will be next week!

woohoo! I was coming over here to post this exciting news too!

Wouldn't it be great if she were to become a national spokesperson for celiac disease. It could be beneficial for her too. Imagine the money ..comercials, endorsements.

Can't wait to see how the view deals with this!!!

So happy to hear her come out and say this! We've known she's had a "problem" with gluten, and we all wondered!

Nice to have it confirmed! Yay Elisabeth!

Let me know when it comes on...I figured out how to Tivo finally :)

dairyqueen: Heidi Collins, a CNN anchor, is a recently appointed spokesperson for Celiac Awareness. Google her and you'll find the info. Yay media people with Celiac!

i was just about to post it as well cause i got this email from the celiac listserve;

Hi all,

There will be a segment on Celiac Disease next week on "The View". =

Elizabeth Hasselback announced just this morning that she is a Celiac, =

and then she said "it is a gluten allergy". I think that is the first =

time she has said her problem is Celiac Disease. Rosie told everyone to =

Google Celiac, and watch for the segment next week.. Given all the =

publicity on "The View" recently, this will be a lot of publicity for =

the cause of people spreading the word of Celiac Disease.

Do you know what comes up first when you google Celiac? Celiac.com! That means we'll probably be getting more visitors and "lurkers" here, which is GREAT! Let's all get ready to welcome newbies and answer questions. Just think about how many people will be interested and possibly visiting here after next week's show!

That's awesome!

It's so nice to watch awareness grow, even in the two years since my diagnosis. It's going to help a lot of people, hopefully.

I don't see any info on their website about content of upcoming shows (other than this weeks guest stars). I sent an email and will post the info if they reply.

The timing is awesome also! With all this Rosie/The Donald stuff going on, more people have been tuning in to the View lately..... even me, and I usually don't watch it..... but will now!

Well i think if you check the schedule next week they may have it online or on the recap part of the website.

I also think it maybe a good idea to email the show or Elisabeth, I did, and just let them know how many people are thankful for them bringing this to their show.

Where did you see that the celiac disease discussion show will air on Friday (1/26/07)? I also emailed Elizabeth to thank her for openly sharing about her celiac disease experience. I encourage anyone reading this to email her a thank you note. Let's STUFF her inbox with appreciation for promoting celiac disease awareness!

It would probably be a good idea for those who have been diagnosed via biopsy or blood work and have nuerological problems that have resolved by going gluten free to email Elisabeth too ....

Thanks ... marcia

Oh, okay. The lower case "b" in boots in your first post didn't lead me in the direction of a proper name. I thought maybe it was a specialty apothecary for people with pedal diseases or something.

In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! There are other things that may cause elevated tTg-IgA levels, but in general a reaction to gluten is the culprit:

Hi @trents Just seen this - Boot's is a chain of pharmacies in the UK, originally founded in the 19th Century by a chap with the surname, Boot.  It's a household name here in the UK and if you say you are going to Boot's everyone knows you are off to the pharmacist! Cristiana

Nacina, Knitty Kitty has given you good advice. But I would say/add find a Fat Soluble B-1 like Benfotiamine for best results.  The kind found in most Multivitamins have a very low absorption rate. This article shows how taking a Fat Soluble B-1 can effectively help absorption by 6x to7x times. https://www.naturalmedicinejournal.com/journal/thiamine-deficiency-and-diabetic-polyneuropathy quoting from the article.... "The group ingesting benfotiamine had maximum plasma thiamine levels that were 6.7 times higher than the group ingesting thiamine mononitrate.32" Also, frequency is much more important than amount when it comes to B-Vitamin. These are best taken with meals because they provide the fat for better absorption. You will know your B-Vitamin is working properly when your urine becomes bright yellow all the time. This may take two or three months to achieve this.......maybe even longer depending on how low he/you are. The Yellow color is from excess Riboflavin bypassing the Kidneys....... Don't stop them until when 2x a day with meals they start producing a bright yellow urine with in 2 or 3 hours after the ingesting the B-Complex...... You will be able to see the color of your urine change as the hours go by and bounce back up after you take them in the evening. When this happens quickly......you are now bypassing all the Riboflavin that is in the supplement. The body won't absorb more than it needs! This can be taken as a "proxy" for your other B-Vitamin levels (if taken a B-Complex) ...... at least at a quick and dirty level......this will only be so for the B-1 Thiamine levels if you are taking the Fat Soluble forms with the Magnesium as Knitty Kitty mentioned. Magnesium is a Co-Factor is a Co-factor for both Thiamine and Vitamin D and your sons levels won't improve unless he also takes Magnesium with his Thiamine and B-Complex. You will notice his energy levels really pick up.  His sleeping will improve and his muscle cramps will get better from the Magnesium! Here is nice blog post that can help you Thiamine and it's many benefits. I hope this is helpful but it is not medical advice God speed on your son's continued journey I used to be him. There is hope! 2 Tim 2:7 “Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things” this included. Posterboy by the grace of God,
