I took the kids to the pumpkin patch, where they were able to enjoy all the typical pumpkin patch type activities - as we were sitting on the hay ride, I noticed that a lot of people were taking a strand of hay (straw?) and putting it in their mouth - and so did my boys - then it dawns on me to wonder, "Is this gluten in its purest form, or what?!"

This may sound amusing, but I haven't been able to find any information to clarify this for me?

This is interesting! We are going on a field trip Thursday, and have a hay ride planned. Anyone who knows anything about this, please respond! Thanks for the thread starter!

I would take a look at the type of hay that they will be riding on. It should not be a problem as long as it is not wheat that has been cut down and baled. This is the wrong time of the year to have wheat ready to bale unless is from last year. Hope the kids have fun.

Hay is not generally wheat/barley/rye or oat. There are many types of hay, alfalfa being one, but not a gluten source. Now, that said, I am in Vermont so maybe it's different where you are.

The biggest problem I can see would be cross-contamination. Do you know a stalk of hay or straw from a stalk of wheat? If you do, then no problem, just watch your kids. If you don't, make sure the kids know not to put anything in their mouths. If they want something to chew like the other kids, try giving them a plastic straw and letting them be city-slicker dudes.

I have found most the time they use straw rather than hay since it doesn't cause people to sneeze as much.

I think straw is also cheaper, so the sponsor wouldn't have to pay as much.

    • Sounds great, one of my dreams is to open a grain free/gluten free food truck.......stone and mortar places would not do well here, but a mobile one able to cater....LOL dream I know, fundraiser has flopped and been running for a year. Hell I had the quotes up, the whole sale contracts setup, the business model and plan. I even tried to get loans, and business partners.....all flopped.
    • Just opened in Cincinnati, Oh: Ma and Pa's Gluten Free Cafe. Dedicated gluten-free restaurant. I had the pizza hoagie and onion rings last night. I forgot just how oily onion rings were. They sat in my stomach like concrete all night long but tasted great. Next time I'm getting the pizza or pulled pork with slaw and fries.  
    • Nope, had the flu and this has happened before when I ate the chili. JMG, I read the deadspin article. It's pretty funny. First, at least we're not bull testicles(Montana), and second, Skyline is the only one claiming to be gluten-free besides Hormel(sucks) and Amy's(sucks) that is Cincinnati style. There are many other local chili's but none are gluten-free. Gold Star is good but they say they're shredded cheese isn't even gluten-free. Like I said, Cincinnati style is the best. It's supposed to have roots from the Mediterranean area. Gold Star is ran by Syrian family, there is one or two others that are ran by Greeks. I kinda agree with the article when it comes to Skyline but I can walk in a store and buy it in a can. I started to thaw so meat yesterday to give it a go but am out of Cumin. No chili today
    • ....post is 12 years old, please check the dates, On a side note to this topic, I had no gluten issues with tide but it caused itching for other reasons I went with Rockin Green and Mollys Suds for a natural detergent years ago. You get like 70-90loads from a bag try, Amazon, Luckyvitamin, or Thrive for them.
    • Really interesting point Kareng.  In fact, my ttg went up this autumn (November), depressingly, and I saw a nutritionalist earlier this month and she doesn't want to retest til March.  She felt it was too soon for those figures, too.
