Erewhon Brown Rice Cream

Has anyone had any reactions from Erewhon Brown Rice Cream or Lundberg's Lime chips (not sure of the correct name of this... but if you've eaten them you would know what I'm talking about)

those are the only new things I ate yesterday - and I'm breaking out and itching so bad right now... I have DH - it's a strong reaction - more than a "trace" of gluten that I've experienced from other products...

the Lundberg's are labeled gluten free (i've eaten two other flavors and had no problems) and I took a chance on the Rice Cream - but I looked it up afterwards (yes, afterwards... ) But they say it's gluten free all over the internet.

I didn't eat anything else yesterday that could have caused this... eggs, grapes, roast, potatoes and broccoli - that's it along with the chips and the brown rice cream.

Hi Debbie,

Both foods you mentioned are gluten-free but made on shared equipment or in shared facilities with gluten. Lundberg's products are mostly made in a gluten-free facility--except the chips and some of the rice mixes.

I called on the hot cereal myself recently, and was told it was not made on dedicated lines.

Some Celiacs are more sensitive than others, and will react to products made on shared lines.

I've not had any problems with the sea salt flavor - that's all I usually buy and my daughter (age 25) - who is celiac as well - finished off the bag of lime flavored and hasn't mentioned any problems

I think I figured out since then that it may not have been the food... I'm a smoker - my husband is very country and wanted to try to roll his own cigarettes... I smoked one of his rolled smokes over the weekend and didn't even stop to think about the possibilities of gluten. Well come to find out the brand of papers he used WERE NOT gluten-free - Honestly that is probably what got me - thank you for all your help - and I know.. I need to quit smoking - it's coming soon.

I had a dh flare on a day I ate the Erewhon rice crispy cereal and wondered if it was the iodide in the sea salt used in the product. I am new and learning.

Well come to find out the brand of papers he used WERE NOT gluten-free -

Do you have the name of the papers? I know a few folks round here who roll their own, and I believe one of them was supposed to be gluten-free. Might as well pass that on to him! :-)

    • It looks insanely good. First time I've wished I was back in London for ages Omg I have to leave the thread I've not eaten yet and now I crave steak  
    • It has always been odd to me that the US, the land of innovation in the world, cannot make great gluten free bread. Of course, no one cares about that except Celiac nation.  I am not saying there isn't good gluten-free bread here because there is.  In the 12 years since my diagnosis, it has come a long way.  However, every time I visit the UK, I am amazed at how much better the bread is.  It more closely matches the flavor and, most importantly, the texture of gluten bread. In fact, there were a few times when I ordered something with bread in a restaurant, and I panicked after taking a bite, thinking they had gotten the wrong bread. No, they didn't...it was just that good!  For those near to London, I implore you to visit here:  http://www.beyondbread.co.uk/  You see those French baguettes?  I had a panini sandwich made from one of those and it was almost a religious experience.    They have won awards for their bread and I can believe it.  I tried to get them to come to the US and open another bakery but I don't think that's going to happen. They have 2 locations......Fitzrovia and Islington.  The Fitzrovia location is very near to the Goodge St. station. Now, hop on the Tube and go there! The meat IS good here, JMG.  We just have so many cows. Cattle country. Now they have created dry aged steaks, which are pricey but they are like the crack of meat. Once you taste how tender they are, you have trouble going back to regular, non-aged meats. They are so tender, they cut like butter. As far as the antibiotics in meat, you can easily buy unadulterated meat here. It's the cheaper, mass produced meats that do that. I know my food and the one thing I love about Europe is the food. In many ways on certain items, the quality is unsurpassed!
    • I was thinking of trying it like 1tbsp maple syrup and upping the egg whites by 10-20g Should make a giant 9"pancake basically with maple flavoring. Not tried it yet but it should work. I was thinking making that version for giant pancake (to thin to pour into smaller ones) that you cook low and slow and can perhaps even use for a breakfast pizza crust with a fruit topping and a creamcheese like spread or just as a pancake, or cut it into sticks for dipping. Should freeze well for toaster reheating later.
