Rice Crispies

I just finished eating a half cup serving of trail mix using gluten-free rice crispies and all gluten-free ingrediants, and am yet running to the bathroom. This is not the first time this has happened. Anyone else have this experience? Please let me know.

What are the ingredients/brands of all the "parts" of the trail mix you made?

I used rice crispies, almonds, dried pineapple, craisens, brown sugar, butter, and frozen pineapple juice concentrate. I've eaten all the other ingrediants alone and have had no problems. Can't figure it out, but another woman in my celiac support group had the same experience.

Did you use regular Kellogg's Rice Crispies? Those contain malt and therefore are not gluten-free.

Beyond that, possibly the other ingredients were processed on shared lines with wheat--some nuts are, for example Diamond Shelled Walnuts (not sure about their almonds).

To figure out the culprit, you need to take each ingredient and determine it's safety for you. If you list them including brands, maybe we can help you.

Hi-- I recently saw a post here where the poster thought some brands of craisins were coated in a gluten mix to keep them from sticking together. Maybe it isn't the rice krispies?

May you glutening be mild and brief!

the box of rice cripies was marked gluten free, and all the other stuff I eat with no problem. Mystery.

Hi Ranger

I don't know how long you have been gluten-free but here's a thought or two! Many do not get enough roughage or fiber & once it dawns on them to add something , it has been awhile since theri intestinal tract has had to break down roughage.

Another thing is the chocolate can cause some distress......Lastly, sometimes you can eat each item on its own but when added to other things it causes upset. This happens to me on occassion but I haven't figured out why!

One other thought to throw in the mix. It may have been something you ate yesterday or the day before that got you gluten wise. For some of us the reaction is delayed between injestion and upset tummy. For myself I have a decided three day pattern. I eat the substance, I get some nongut related nastyness and then 3 days later the D hits.

If you were using Erewhon crispy brown rice cereal, it is made on the same lines as Oatie-O's. We found an Oatie-O in our crispy brown rice with mixed berries box....

    • I am more stressed about what sales will be out on cyber Monday and black Friday then the actual thanksgiving holidays lol. Cooking is just cooking, I do it daily, just doing more and some special dishes. NOW once a year sales on products I use daily like supplements, spices, foods, flours, etc....now that has me stressed. Like I have a limited budget but if I get them on these sales I save money for the next few months buying in bulk on sale......but then the stress of borrowing money and doing so....which purchases to make, what saves me the most in the long run, will it last me til the next sale...balancing all this out with a limited budget when your bad with numbers is scary/frustrating. Damnest thing is I do not care for the specials on technology. vanity items, etc. I am just focusing on essentials and stuff I use or would use daily to improve my life and make savings in the long run. I think the only actual 2 items I am looking at is a charm for my mother for Christmas and a water filtration system for my kitchen. Other then that it is all food, supplements, spices, and medications lol.

      OH another funny thought due to lack of orders, I am opting to go help cook a community dinner at a church for over 450 people. I already brought/opted in to bring my own spices, starches, etc for the areas to keep it safe for my stations and will be helping with the turkeys and serving up a bunch of gluten free/corn free desserts so I will be in a safe element for my health risk. Got 16 turkeys, 1 food service pan of gluten free pear cobbler, 1 pan of pumpkin chocolate brownies gluten free, pumpkin pies to pull out and do starting in the morning.
    • http://www.newburnbakehouse.com/supermarket-products#wraps Starbuck's also had wrap sandwiches in London and this was the company they used.  Warburton's bread and wraps put everything in the US to shame.  The wraps are moist, delicious and do not SPLIT!  I could actually consider a move to the the UK just to have access to this bread.  I will say it again.....the UK has the BEST gluten-free bread I have ever had.  If I could afford shipping a cooler of the stuff to the US, I would.  Really miss my good bread.  And now I see they have crumpets........ Costa coffee is great...never had a problem with it.
    • Why wouldn't it be gluten-free?  whiskey is gluten-free. Wine is gluten-free.  
    • Have you been tested for a stomach ulcer?  That's what the pain sounds like to me.  You can also get pain in your stomach from too much gas.  Another possibility is GERD.
    • Well, you can always trial the gluten-free diet, but do it for at least six months.  Act exactly as if you had celiac disease.  Worry about cross contamination and learn to read labels.   My own hubby did this per the very poor advice from two medical doctors 16 years ago (and we had good insurance!).  The diet worked.  After a year of learning, he has faithfully remained gluten-free.  So, it can be done.  He will say that I have had it much easier with a firm diagnosis.  However, it is not always possible to get that diagnosis.  The bottom line is to protect your health!
