Hi. OK. Maiden name; Seymour. Grandmother: Helen Long. Great-grandmother: Molly Ahearn. Any relatives out there? My question is this- I eat corned beef and cabbage every St. Pat's day, but is it authentic?? I have a feeling that people in Ireland don't. Anyone know?

When I was in Ireland corned beef and cabbage was rarely on the menu. I think I saw it once and that was in Dublin.

But I can say I had absolutely no problems eating in Ireland and I love Ireland for many reasons.

I have lived in Ireland though, and my experience was this: while they do eat boiled seasoned meat and cabbage, fairly often, its not a specific St Patricks thing. St Patricks is a religious holiday. You go to Mass. And, its during Lent. So the giant partying is an American thing, though now some of it has retroactively spilled back to Ireland. Now there are parades and stuff, but its not traditional.

I'm the daughter of an irish immigrant who married into an irish-american family, does that count? :P

I don't really celebrate St Pat's outside my home, but I tend to make some traditional food for my friends. We're having a game day this weekend and I'm making some gluten-free soda bread and some mini meat pies, both foods from my childhood. I did eat a lot of boiled cabbage and potatoes and parsnips(ew) as a kid, mostly at my irish grannies house. I remember brisket but no corned beef like they sell on St. Pat's here, corned beef was always something you had as hash for breakfast.

Lamb stew with barley and dumplings was always our St Pat's meal. Of course now I use rice instead of barley and make the dumplings with Pamela's mix.. but hey, it works.

I am almost 1/2 Irish, mostly Swedish. My grandma always cooked "farm fresh" food but never taught us anything specifically Irish. Probably b/c she was an orphan and never learned. She taught me how to bake COOKIES! She was a great cook. Names are Anderson, Neilson and Peterson, beyond that IDK.

    • Yep I nailed a JAXpac meal prep kit on amazon day and have been leaving my house more with it packing my own gluten-free herbed flat bread, salads, almond butter, and seeds with me. Made a nice vegan  taco soup the other day with my own cheese sauce, keto salsa (watered down low carb version thickened to a sauce with konjac) miracle rice, and jackfruit meat sub, was great with some taco seasoned thin flat breads from my newest recipe used as tortillas. Lifes been good for me this month celiac health wise. >.< everything else is SUPER bad lol.
    • Yep, we really have it good when you think about it. The only treatment for us is eating gluten free. No pills, no chemo, no radiation. And there is plenty for us to eat, especially now with so many gluten-free foods on the market that are tasty. Labeling laws make it easier too. 20 years ago, these things were not true and celiacs had to be wary of so much. I am glad to hear you are taking your own food when eating out. Kudos!
    • D3 should be taken every 3-7days not daily. It stays in your body for awhile and is easy to OD with causing nausea and vomiting.
    • I am only 7 weeks gluten free and it hasn't been that bad.  I am a silent celiac so I may be glutening myself without knowing it. However, it hasn't been as bad as I thought.  There are a lot of foods I can eat.  When I have had to eat out, I bring my own salad.  At home, whatever I prepare is gluten free.  A friend of mine who had breast cancer a few years back, contracted Parkinson's last year and the. Found out her cancer is back.  It really put this in perspective for me.  I don't have to take pills and deal with side effects, I don't have cancer.  I have to watch my food intake.  I can do it.
    • Thank you all for replying. It's good to know that it's not just me. It gives me (and hopefully the other noobs) some comfort to know that it's normal for the ups and downs to happen. I keep trying to tell myself to be patient with it but it's so hard to be able to look down the road further than the moment when you're in the middle of it. I forgot to mention, yeah, I have had a full vitamin, mineral, and general blood panel done and everything came back normal. Regardless I still supplement with a good (and expensive) multivitamin plus sublingual D3 and B12 every day, and naturally I scrutinize the labels on those and everything else for anything even non-gluten that sounds fishy, including the possibility of CC at the factory. I guess it will just take longer to stabilize.
