I've been gluten-free for 9 months now and doing much better overall. My last checkup showed that I'm anemic again and the nurse who called with my results said to take a supplement or multivitamin. I've been piecemealing my supplements and had discovered that all the B supplements that came in pill or capsule form upset my stomach, so I've been using liquid with no problems. I'm finding that iron is causing a similar problem.

I've tried Slow FE and Gentlesorb (from GNC) and both have left me feeling like I'm not digesting them properly. I have almost immediate vision problems (can't get my eyes to focus), water retention, and extreme tiredness. Those are my early warning for gluten, but with gluten this would be followed by digestive problems and diarrhea. I have very similar reactions to nightshade vegetables, but I've been avoiding those too and can't *see* any in the ingredient list. I checked and both of these supplements are gluten free, so I'm wondering how likely it is that they have potato starch in them, or if anyone has found a liquid iron supplement or know a better way to supplement. I am really feeling the anemia, so I know I need to take something, but I need something that isn't going to put me on the couch for the duration.

Whole Foods has liquid iron supplements. A popular one is Floradil or Floradix is a liquid iron supplement - but check the ingredients, one of the two has gluten, the other does not (it's clearly labeled). I use a different one, but don't recall the name at the moment.

I found I couldn't tolerate any oral supplements. I tried them all, and they all made me nauseous or actually vomiting.

My doc set me up with iron infusions. I went twice, with 3 weeks in between, for IV infusions. It takes about 3 hours, doesn't hurt and it worked.

My Ferritin went from 2 to 45, where no pill would help.

Something to consider :D

Watkins has a liquid iron supplement called Beef Iron & Wine Tonic.

Ingredients: Sherry wine, water, alcohol (18%, v/v), ferric ammonium citrate, solid beef extract, natural and artificial flavors, ammonium hydroxide, sodium saccharin, Red #40, citric acid.

I've never taken it myself because I've never needed it. However, I've never been let down by any of their products (other than the ones that have gluten :P;) ) and I use quite a lot of their products. I used to have a list of their gluten free products, but it would be about 4 years out of date now, and I have no idea where I've put it.

i was really anemic person from my childtime.

the doctor sad to me that iron deficiency is the most common blood disorder and it is caused by lack of iron.

Without a sufficient amount of iron the body can not produce enough hemoglobin.

I tried to use something that will help my body to produce more hemoglobin.

Almost all life of battle with anemia and it seems now i stoped to be anemic, my last researches was good.

All people who have same problem keep trying, never give up!

You might need to be checked for Pernicious Anemia. It has a connection to Celiac because it is caused by the gut lining lacking the proper intrinsic factor to process vitamin B12.

Iron supplements make me vomit. Foods with a higher iron level make me run for the bathroom too. :huh:

If there are any other "odd" symptoms you might be forgetting to mention, you should have your blood checked for other auto-immune disorders.

    • This - I agree with all of this. I have also twigged that if oats are a problem then certified processed gluten free food is out. And I got really sick from drywall. It's such a relief to hear this as there was a time when I was feeling like an alien for thinking these things. Well I agree 99.9%. I had a skin problem, possibly DH, which got better when I gave up gluten, improved further when I gave up processed foods but it wasn't until I stopped eating dry beans that I stopped getting any flares. I am also sensitive to egg though (although that does something different to my skin) so I'm a bit a skin-reactive person. Could be worth cutting it out just to see if that helps?
    • Hi Celiac4762, The carbs I eat are sweet potato, parsnip and squash plus loads of fruit. With rice I'm ok if it's from a reputable source. Once I get glutened I steer clear of it for a month to give myself an extra break and then go back to it in smallish quantities. I have carbs once a day rather than every meal to save time. I can hear in your tone this tired, fed up tone that I recognise so well from when I get glutened. I know what it's like to dream of living in a far away gluten free bubble. I felt like that but after a couple of months (which were a hard adjustment) I got to a stage of knowing what I needed to do. Your medical background will help you methodically work out what you need to cut out and what is safe and you will get there. Stick with college.     • Thanks to both of you. Ok, so I was feeling not great and went grain free for 5 weeks. Then slowly started to introduce grains. All seemed ok, then I had an issue after 3 weeks, with blood in my stool. Celiac wasn't on my radar. In fact, rice and oats are what seem to bother me most. But the Dr added on the celiac test and it was indeterminate. So I was sent for endoscopy and colonoscopy. I consumed gluten for just over two weeks, then went back to my grain free, dairy free diet. I saw my Dr this am and she said my bowels were healthy, that the Dr had taken 'several' samples and that all is well on both ends.  (No celiac, but also not H Pylori, crohn's, etc). She is running all kinds of other bloodwork, because I am still feeling terrible, and obviously the assumption I had made was that it was celiac. I'm going to stay off gluten for now, in hopes that I'll start to feel better. My GI symptoms are worse this week than they have been in ages...so something is up, but apparently I'm healthy??! I am pretty sure my Dr. would not refer me to another GI. She's not the best, but it's very hard to find another Dr. here, especially if you already have a Dr. (Canada) I am going to ask her for a copy of the report though, as well as the rest of the bloodwork she's sending me for.

    • I'm confused. You don't have celiac? Have you had a blood test or biopsy? Have you been diagnosed with DH?  What were you diagnosed with 9 years ago? If it was celiac or DH why have you only been gluten-free for 6 months? We need a better picture of what's going on here to help you more successfully.
