I am of the opinion that fluff makes a better hot chocolate additive than marshmallows.

Marshmallows take too long to melt and then get stuck to your lip. Also, I don't even want

to know how your tiny little girl brain figured jam got into jars! :lol: :lol:

Well that's easy. I grew up on a farm making jam. I know exactly how that got in the jars. I put it there!

Seemed like a good idea a few hours ago.....

I didn't know when I was little that gravy could come in a jar. To this day I believe that it is a crime against humanity considering how easy it is to make yourself.

If you weren't so darn far away I would come help. That sounds good. I keep screwing up this planning thing. I didn't think about wanting a roast for dinner until about 11 last night so it's still a brick in my fridge and will have to wait until tomorrow. Do muddy buddies count as dinner? No? Well that's mean. Maybe I'll throw together a couple more arepas and another pot of fresh cheese and grill a burger. I just don't feel up to much myself. Today would be a perfect napping day.

Yes, I suppose it is a fair question. It never occurred to me as a child that things weren't somehow natural. We killed our own animals, until I was 3 we had a milk cow and we grew our own vegetables. I didn't know food could come from, wherever it is marshmallows come from. I suppose I'm an odd duck though, as a parent I convinced my preschool aged children that there was such a thing as a Spam animal. I even drew them a picture.

Spent the morning in the ER (blech - thought I was having a heart attack) so my dinner plans are now on hold for tomorrow's dinner. So, we just had gnocchi (easy to whip up quickly) with a fresh tomato sauce. And some of my garlic cucumber dills.

I'm ok. This morning I awoke to intense pressure on my chest radiating into my shoulder blades. It felt as though someone were sitting on my chest, making it tricky to breathe well. So, this morning I was poked and prodded. Thankfully the ER doc I saw was thorough. He said it was not a heart attack but muscle tightness - could be my costochondritis acting up. I also had an extremely painful mammogram yesterday (that is another story) so my chest was also sore from that. Scary, though, having such a weird sensation!

Tomorrow's dinner will be a bit more planned. :D

Great to hear...I had a similar rush to ER just after the New Year flip...only idea after a day of a very new scary pain was connective tissue in the chest -- great. At least it was a false alarm....yet another mystery :wacko:

That's scary! I'm glad you're okay though and hope that you're back to feeling yourself soon. I'm not terribly far from that first mammogram and frankly not particularly excited. I have nothing but sympathy for that whole thing too as I've heard it can (as it was for you) sometimes be dreadfully awful.

I ended up having Spam and toast and eggs. I still haven't decided if I'm okay with the texture of that fake egg junk. They work great for baking but they're a little off for eating. Oh well, it was food. I have a whole tub of mango sorbet in the freezer to go get into which I just may be doing here shortly.

The mammogram probably somehow set it off. IF your sore in one area, another is likely to act up, chain reaction and all that jazz. Glad to see you went in.

I'm going to try to make Jerky with simple brine - couldn't find anything safe to use as marinade - I will - but for now wanna test out the dehydrator.

No mystery to me, girls. I get it. Those ER trips pre-DX,,,, only to have a normal EKG? Found it is chostochondiritis. And intense connective tissue pain, muscles like wood ...these are my life. And YES, definitely celiac related. The good thing is, it gets less intense with time, massages, PT, stretching, etc,

Glad you are all right, Lovey! I suggest warm compresses, massages and relaxation. Physical therapy, cupping-- anything to relax those muscles. Hugs to you both, as I literally "feel " your pain.

Mammograms should not hurt, but if you have trigger points (those hyper-irritable knots you can feel as your run your fingers over your muscles?) will make them feel like torture. Massage the areas as often as you can to break them up.They will release. Tell your hubbies you need frequent chest massages and see how fast they come running......Just a thought, sent with :wub:

Dinner tonight:

Bison stuffed peppers. Never thought I'd enjoy bison,, but I admit it....it's good.

My experiment off grains spoke volumes. I was grain free for 3.5 weeks, then had some over Thanksgiving (in stuffing, a piece of pie, corn starch in the gravy), and the pain in my joints, bones and muscles ramped up so dramatically, and I bloated up about 5 lbs. ----that the connection couldn't be any more clear.

Dammit dammit dammit....I love rice and corn. waaaa!

Sucks eh -- actually it does get better if it leads to healing -- I'm starting my six month clock again effective Thanksgiving -- all goes well I'll be trialing bacon, eggs, guacamole and rice just in time for me birthday - the real one, not the silly one - hmmmm maybe bacon on my silly bday.

Here's hoping you are feeling so good soon that you don't care about the loss of grains for awhile - I'm hoping it for you until you are feeling stronger.

And never forget it takes more muscles to :( than to :) - too early for a good joke -- in college app hell here -- last minute change in which State Uni's DS is applying to -- funny how different kids are -- older "engineer" brother had his in as soon as colleges accepted -- younger "gifted writer and artist"....well here we were starting at 5 am this morning - nuf said. Someone's back from gobbling his breakfast.

Someone else pull out some giggles -- ERs and no grains need some laughs

OH and mammograms have never hurt me -- it may be barbaric, but VERY important - get in there and get the ladies squished ladies - well not you Shadow -- but you should be checking in the Shower --- never too early to get in the habit -- public service announcement done. Back after we push SEND :)

I don't mind the "no grains" thing that much. Primal eating is very good.

It's the inconvenience . Many of my best recipes include those grains: risottos, mexican, asian, rice pilafs, etc.

It's just the idea of one more thing to have to "give up" :angry:

I mean, why couldn't I have issues with eel, sweetbreads, brains,even snotty marshmallow fluff ...?

Those--I am happy to avoid. :lol:

So true. It is very frustrating at first, and the longer you have been ill before diagnosis, the longer it can take. I did the whole allergist testing/elimination diet stuff and stayed gluten, dairy, soy, legume, tapioca, coconut, grain lite, and corn free for 5 years. Not fun, but walking that thin line allowed me to feel almost well more days than not.

As I slowly (the operative word here) had more good days than bad, I tried adding dairy, which to my amazement went well. Then corn several months later. I figured at that point I had more variety and was satisfied. Earlier this year, I tried the dreaded (for me) legumes and I find if I limit to a couple times a week, I'm good. The biggest surprise though was tapioca--which had previously caused me such pain that I avoided it like gluten. After gingerly trying some in a cookie, I was floored to discover I was now ok with it.

Soy (which I would avoid anyway) and coconut are still no go's, but who cares! My point is, healing is taking place--even if it doesn't seem like it. It just takes (a lot <_< ) longer for some of us. Threads like this just go to show how resilient, creative, and tough you all are--eating so well on what is available to you. I love it!! :D

It WAS scary. On the way to the hospital my husband and I were trying to talk about "normal" things to be calm. It really helped. Thankfully my BP was perfect.

My first mammogram 1.5 years ago was not painful whatsoever. This one was very painful as it was not a scanning mammogram but a diagnostic one which requires even more squishing! I also had an U/S after as there is something suspicious. I get my results back in a week and have told myself NOT to worry until I know anything definitive. As I have costochondritis even having a shower or putting on clothes even hurts. :( Oh, yes. There are also icky cysts in there. So it is no wonder it was so painful. Normally they are not that bad. Honest. The technician thanked me for being so "kind" (I did not complain) and told me I have an unusually high pain threshhold. Here in Canada these tests are all covered by healthcare so we are blessed. Not sure how much mammograms are in the U.S.

    • Insurance is a pain! But, one of the interesting things about the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) is that it set individual out of pocket maximums. This year it is $7100. I realize that it is a HUGE amount of money, but if you started to pursue the work up this year and don't delay, you could get everything done (scope, labs, doc visits) and know the answer in a couple of months.  The most you would pay is $7100 for everything. Most hospitals have payment plans and some offer discounts if you pay cash. It's just a thought, but sometimes getting all your healthcare needs answered at once can relieve a lot of anxiety and be more affordable in the long run. I wish you luck. I hate insurance issues.
    • Hi all, I know this strand is a little old, but I just joined and have a related concern and wanted to express it in the right place. My period has been changing over the past two years or so. I used to be like clockwork, every 28 days. Now they come a little earlier and don't last as long, or they stop and restart, sometimes with some mid-cycle spotting. I've also been fatigued but that could have to do with work (I run my own business and teach on the side). I didn't make any connection with my celiac DX until yesterday when I was reading about peri-menopause. This month I got the heavy feeling in my legs and the sense that it was coming but... it never came. I thought I had a long time before I had to worry about the change! I'm 42. I've never missed a period, even when I was super-anemic. Ugh. Fortunately my mom said she never had any truly uncomfortable symptoms and she (still!) has the bone density of a much younger person. Hopefully I'll have the same experience. My yearly GYN appt. is coming up in July. Should I just wait and see, then say something to my doc then? Thanks in advance for any light you could shed on this.
    • You would think that there is enough people out there, people with celiac disease, that we'd be able to push for a better standard than 20ppm. The problem is the FDA. Too much lobbying involved. It's no different than the fight people are having with Monsanto. I hear that there are several medications that are showing promise in Canada who I think also has a better standard than us.(not positive about that though)
    • Make sure that you ask the doctor how long she has to stop the supplements before you have her levels tested and be sure to take them all with you when you have the appointment so the doctor knows what she is taking.
    • Talk to your doctor. With your family history and symptoms he/she may be able to diagnose based on resolution of your symptoms and family history. Also check with your local hospital if it has it's own lab.  Mine covered any labs at a greatly reduced cost based on a sliding fee scale. Did you have an MRI before they did the spinal? Celiacs with neuro impact will have white spots on an MRI that resemble the lesions found with MS. Many neuro doctors don't know this. I went through what you did and they did a spinal on me also based on the MRI results. If my doctor had know what the UBOs (unidentified bright objects) were I would have been diagnosed a couple years sooner than I was. Make sure if you supplement that you ask your doctor which ones you need to stop taking and for how long before they do a blood test to check levels. Sublingual B12 is a good idea when we have nervous system issues, but needs to be stopped for at least a week for an accurate blood level on testing. I hope you get some answers and feel better soon.
