No in and outs anywhere near where I will be traveling so far...I'm hoping my "find me gluten free" app works!!!

Just know that not all the reviews on FMGF are written by celiacs and true NCGS. Some "G F" peeps are willing to eat in places that have a G F menu yes, but they do not seem to question the kitchen practices, ingredients, or prep. Just be very careful, ok?  When I review, I always say "I have celiac and I found this place to be....".

Speaking of dining out. After 2 days on the road and eating from the stash in the car cooler and using hotel microwaves, we enjoyed a fabulous meal at Bonefish Grill in (Bel Air, MD (filet of beef, mashed garlic potatoes, zucchini and a creme brulee on the house . The waiter, for some reason, liked me and felt I deserved it. True story!) :)

Last night, after reaching our first destination (Albany, NY) and visiting with friends, they took us to Joe's Crab Shack. A fellow celiac, she has dined there and had no problems whatsoever. She owns Sherry Lynn's G F bakery in Latham--the first dedicated one in the country!--and the first thing she did after hugging me was give me cookies. lol YUM!!

The crab, lobster, corn on the cob was fantastic. And we had a blast. For the first time in 3 nights, I slept like a baby. (hotel beds leave much to be desired). This one was pretty sweet.  ^_^

I see my celiac GI doc for my checkup today. Can't wait to hear him tease me with "gained some weight, hey...?"

Have to "suffer through" another Bonefish meal tonight (dinner with family) so I'll likely have the Chilean Sea Bass with mango salsa, jasmine rice and asparagus and I will try to avoid the creme brulee, if possible. (not making any promises)

We hit the road for Mass and NH tomorrow....Ski will start singing "on the road again...." right about now.....

Thanks for all the texts. It broke up the endless monotony that is I-95. 1300 miles down, so many more to go.

Irish, I agree on the reviews issue! I actually read a review on one place where the person got regular pasta mixed in with their gluten free pasta and they just shrugged it off and kept eating. So it's good to beware of the reviews written by the fad dieters!

The next time you come Karen maybe there will be an In N Out. We have 10 now and they're opening more! Also, look up The Pie. You'll never feel better about a pizza, both safe and delicious. They're in the city, and a few other locations, I guess what you'd call a local chain. Heck, I'll come have a pizza with you!

Rule in my house, never make fried chicken without making enough for leftovers. Tonight will be more chicken! The recipe from the ATK book is really good, we were both quite pleased with it. (for a change) I made a little bowl of cucumber salad last night for myself. Today I think I'll just make a huge bowl. The celiac support group potluck is tomorrow night and I have leftover cucumbers from making pickles and I wasn't sure what to take but I have everything I need for a large bowl of cucumber salad so I guess that's settled. And if I make it tonight I can have some tonight. ^_^ I also have purple beans ready to pick again.

I need to learn how to get people to give me free creme brulee. That's some serious skills right there.

Karen's Favorite Gadget or KFKG - Karen's Favorite Kitchen gadget = crockpot

I use mine a lot and they made fun of me - until they realized the awesomeness of the Crockpot. Very good in the summer because it doesn't' heat the kitchen.

Yep...used to use it all the time when boys were on baseball and soccer teams as dinner was ready after practice or games...poor thing got rusty. Glad Karen got mine humming again!

Mine is going to have a chicken pasta casserole type deal in it tonight :)

Last night I had a NY strip steak with a baked potato and broccoli. Simple yet totally delicious. Don't know what I'm having tonight but we have chicken breast thawing and some Aidelle sausag in the fridge.

I had some chicken fajita meat and cheese in a corn tortilla and some baked zucchini.

I had to eat at the cafeteria at the hospital today--I was being a guinea pig for a research study--, get down there, see the board, list gluten free meals---yay!!  Can't find them anywhere.  I finally asked one of the cooks/chef whatever, he showed me the 3 microwavable meals they had...but then went on to say that I could do a burger or chicken sandwich and they had gluten-free buns.  I asked if they cooked bread on their grill and he said they did but the chicken and hamburgers are cooked elsewhere and don't touch the grill.  He said he could toast the bun for me....unless I was Celiac and then he wouldn't do that.  So, I had a wheat bun, untoasted with chicken.  I was going to have something off the salad bar until I saw a woman using the same set of tongs for several items and thought better of that....so I got a container of cottage cheese :D.

Hey! I'm a nice person. Sometimes. Well, in public anyway. Maybe that's not entirely true. I'm nice to customer service people! Mostly because I know how hard it is.

Amended: I'm nice to my servers. Always be nice to servers. They can spit in your food.

I got out a container of my husband's spaghetti sauce. I have a jar in the pantry in case I'm hungry tonight. We'll see what happens. Tonight is the local support group's annual pot luck in the park. Every year I skip it and the cookie party. I'm always paranoid. What if they have a shared kitchen, what if they screw up one ingredient, what if what if what if... What if I shut off my brain for one stinkin night instead of being a paranoid freak and go have fun and just eat whatever is there since it'll all be gluten free? So I'm going, I'm gonna eat like a pig, I'm going to have fun, and I may or may not want dinner tonight. The pot luck is between the time I usually have my lunch and my dinner since our schedules are so off of normal. Someone is even bringing homemade root beer tonight. I better go pick out what to wear. B)

While looking for KFG recipes I stumbled upon sweet and spiced bacon wrapped tater tots -- inspired our dinner tonight:

BBQ Pork Chops

Sweet and Spicy Bacon Wrapped Sweet Potato and Butternut Squash Fries!!!

I'll throw something green together or have a kid make a salad.

I picked up some uncured bacon so I can have a couple fries....can. not. wait!

We got 2 toaster ovens for wedding presents back in the dark ages and never thought I would use one--we regifted them  :o .   I don't know that I would have used it as much when our kids were still home but it's just the right size for hubs and me.

Had a small spinach salad with left over chicken cubes.  I might have to thaw out a chocolate muffin

I started using one when we had a tiny kitchen at a mountain cabin for one ski season...amazing how much can be done in it!

Some of the major food groups are milk, cheese (yes, they're different food groups) bacon and chocolate. So if you have milk with your muffin you're covering two food groups for supper! Sounds good to me.

I had SO MUCH FOOD! Talked to lots of people, made new friends. (don't remember anyone's names ) Had a blast and generally feel awesome for letting go and enjoying myself. And people really liked my cucumber salad. Which is weird to me because it's just cucumbers... with sauce. Hey, whatever makes people happy. I enjoy it, but then I enjoyed everything I had. ^_^ It's hard not to at a potluck when you can eat ALL the food.

    • MelissaNZ,  Has your daughter been checked for vitamin deficiencies??? Vitamin D deficiency symptoms include urinary incontinence, oral candidiasis (thrush), skin rashes, bumps on the backs of arms, joint pain, distended stomach and short stature.  Bones can't grow much without vitamin D.  Vitamin D deficiency causes delayed gastric emptying (food doesn't move through the gastrointestinal tract at a normal speed and the intestines bloat) which explains your daughter's delayed reaction to the cake.   Vitamin A deficiency is also a cause of bumps on the back of the arms. Vitamin A deficiency causes vision problems. Vitamin A and D are both fat soluble vitamins.  Absorption of fats is a problem for Celiacs.  So is absorption of B vitamins and important minerals. B Complex vitamins are water soluble and must be replenished every day. Skin rashes are associated with several B vitamins like niacin (B3), B12, and thiamine (B1).   I went through a period of severe malnutrition prior to diagnosis.  It was not a pleasant experience.  I had symptoms similar to your daughter's, including the incontinence, which resolved on vitamin D supplementation.   Please, please have your daughter tested for vitamin D deficiency.  And have her B vitamins checked as well.  Celiac Disease causes malabsorption.  Malabsorption causes deficiency diseases.  Newly diagnosed Celiacs need to be checked for deficiencies.   I hope this helps.
    • I will try to make my long story short, I have been searching my whole life for a diagnosis,  I have seen pretty much every doctor possible I even went through a spinal tap recently because they thought I had multiple sclerosis,  when I was younger I was always throwing up and having stomach problems, a couple hospital visits they thought I had appendicitis, I started having a neurological symptoms as well as  anxiety and depression,  The fatigue was just over bearing,  I was having numbness and tingling and muscle spasms all the time eventually started having seizures,  which kind of cycled through and stop happening after a couple months,  and then it dawned upon me my brother has celiac pretty severely, my grandmother also has celiac, my dad does as well, I don't know why I never thought that it could be my issue, for the last week I have   Been gluten-free and steering clear of cross-contamination,  my dizziness is improved my fatigue is improved as well as rashes I was getting on my arms  and sides,  I have no more muscle jerks or spasms, The problem is I have horrible insurance and I cannot afford testing, so I am at least trying to do it an home blood test,  I know it's not very accurate on telling me if I have celiac or not,   But the thought I may never know for sure if I have it is very daunting.  My family keeps telling me you don't need  to spend thousands of dollars to have a doctor tell you you can't eat something you already know you can't. Just was wondering if anybody else has been in my position and seeing if anybody has a vi just was wondering if anybody else has been in my position and seeing if anybody has advice,  I don't want to be known as one of those people who believe they have something and people with the disease frown upon them it's a very scary thing to think about.
    • ...ON a side note this is quite easy, you can make your own out of any gluten-free Bread mix, I recently started using a coconut flour blend for this.......Most often people associate caraway with Rye Bread so you just add caraway seeds to the dough and a bit more vinegar to sour it a tad and BAM gluten-free Rye Bread knock off. I think Authentic Foods even has a additive to put in bread mixes to make it taste like Rye Bread....Or you can buy it preamade, I have issues with all the other ingredients but as for one of the best gluten-free Breads out the Canyon House makes a Rye like bread https://canyonglutenfree.com/buy-gluten-free-bread-products/Gluten-Free-Rye-Deli-Sandwich-Bread.html
    • Took me less than a minute, although why did they need our addy and phone?
    • As mentioned before you said she had rashes, have they checked if that is DH? That is a positive sign of celiac and those with the DH manifestation can have problems getting a postive with the gut biopsy.   Here are some links. https://celiac.org/celiac-disease/understanding-celiac-disease-2/dermatitis-herpetiformis/ https://www.gluten.org/resources/getting-started/dermatitus-herpetiformis/ Please read up on this. She can get the rash tested for the disease if it is DH.
