Corn Related To Gluten As Well?!

I seen this on the news awhile ago but I came across the website. I myself can tolerate corn, or high fructose corn syrup. Nor can I tolerate beans very well. Oh... It won't let me post the whole Thing. But I guess research has supposedly found corn gluten to have similar effects and damages in people with celiac. Like I said I have found myself to be intolerant to any form of corn and beans

They also included reactions to certain beans. Now their questioning the directions and definition of a true gluten free diet. Any thoughts on the subject?

I have always had a problem with corn - bloated, burning diarrhea, pain in my abdomen - and at first my doctor thought I had IBS, but after asking me some other questions, she said she wanted to test me for Celiac. I was shocked to find out that I do have Celiac. I haven't touched corn since... Much happier!!!

There are many of us who have problems with corn, too. The corn 'gluten' is different from that in wheat, barley and rye and most celiacs can eat it without problem, but for many of us it is a separate intolerance we also have. All grain plants have storage proteins that work in the same way as gluten and it is possible to react to them also -- it is just not the same reaction as to the gluten in wheat, rye and barley. There is also a protein known as a lectin in all these grains and pseudo-grains like millet, quinoa, amaranth, and some of us are lectin-reactive also.

I knew corn made me bloat before I knew about gluten. Now, I also react to rice. I agree with the infomation found on that website, if it is the same one that has been banned, that I tried to post about. Perhaps not all need to be that strict... but for me it works! I am still eating beans, but eyeing the reactions cautiously. The people associated with that website have been really generous with me offering free videos and information on occassion.

I am unsure if I have Celiac specifically, but I am allergic to corn as well as having a gluten free diet.

How can you tell if your body is just taking a long time to heal or if you need to eliminate other foods? I made some chicken last night coated in corn starch (very good - from gluten-free pinterest board), pan fried in coconut oil and my daughter has been "glutened" since about an hour after we ate it. She's feeling terrible and so am I for not knowing how to care for her. I wonder if the corn starch is something we should avoid??

    • So, do they just test your DGP like they just test my TTG?
    • The only test I have had done is the TTG because that's what I had done initially after taking matters into my own hands and going to my local health fair. Celiac is so common they do that screening at our health fair. My number was so high that my doctor didn't order other labs and went straight for a biopsy, which showed stage 3b damage. I've had my blood re-drawn (the TTG IGA) at 2 months and then at 9 months, and now. It's always just been that TTG IGA test. He hasn't ordered anything else, and has said it's not necessary for me to get the other panels done. I think that's probably because all he had at first was the TTG and he followed protocol by going for the biopsy since my number was so high. They didn't do the IGA deficiency test on me first, but Gemini said that if I were deficient my test would have been falsely negative, rather than >100. Plus my intestines showed blunting and hyperplasia, so that's how he confirmed his diagnosis. I am going to ask him why he doesn't order me the other tests though, out of curiosity. I know that the TTG tests mostly for intestinal damage and that's likely how he's monitoring my internal healing. He's always said that as long as I feel ok and my TTG is normal he isn't worried about me and said that we can just touch base annually unless symptoms arise. I've always wondered a bit about the DGP because I've never had it done, but Dr. Kim said it's not necessary to have that done (in my case). I'm sure he knows why, but I've never asked. I know others on here have suggested that I have that done, but since my doctor hasn't ordered it I haven't had it done.  The results usually come back within a week so I should know something soon. I'll repost to let you guys know how it's going. 
    • Celiac used to be considered a children's disease - so, by the old standards, you are a bit old to be diagnosed.  We now know that Celiac can start at any age. I don't know if you are a  male or a female, but untreated Celiac can lead to miscarriages and infertility.  And all the other stuff mentioned above.  
    • 19 is not young for this. One can be diagnosed at any age.  How about this stat:  before anyone understood what actually caused celiac disease, most folks diagnosed with it died.  The complications when consuming gluten affect every system of the body.  Lack of symptoms doesn’t mean there isn’t damage. The cancer risk is real.  The neuropathy risk is real.  At 19, you have a lot ahead of you that you would be willingly tossing aside. It is a real, serious disease where the treatment is only food...not drugs with side affects, not chemo, not stents or insulin.   
    • Nope, you don't have to go on a gluten free diet.  It is a choice everyday what you put into your body.  But there caveats to that -- if you continue to eat gluten, you don't know how good you could feel.  Eating gluten will eventually lead to malnutrition, osteoporosis, likely gut cancers, other autoimmune diseases, and probably an early death due to your auto immune disease.   The only thing on your list that you really have to give up is beer and even then you can drink cider.  Gluten free buns, gluten free sausages and gluten free cakes all exist and aren't terrible.  They are in the beginning, but you get used to it. So, yes, in the beginning it stinks, but like anything you get used it it and move on.
