Substitutes For Margarine And Butter
0

14 posts in this topic

Today I noticed when I ate it, it made my stomach queasy -- it never did before I was gluten free, maybe I just didn't notice because usually I'd eat butter with wheat bread? (It's a different feeling than being glutened) Anyhow, now I need a substitute because I like to bake - and I like butter on toast. I've read a few things I can use to substitute when baking, but what about for eating? What do you use other than butter or margarine, that tastes like butter and margarine?

Just like with gluten subs, you will not find one that tastes exactly the same.

We like olive oil and the kids LOVE baked garlic as a spread on things.

For baking I will use canned pumpkin or applesauce in place of butter. (prefer the first)

I use Earth Balance for baking and eating....I'm allergic to gluten, soy, dairy and this is the best substitute for me. I also like coconut oil on my veggies and have adapted quite well to the flavor.

Canned pumpkin? Never tried that. I will. I replace with applesauce and yogourt, but I never knew you could use pumpkin.

Also, thanks for the olive oil suggestion. I've never tried that.

You can use canned black beans to make cho chip cookies!

Whirled spinach or white beans...you name, it can and will replace FATS!

I only use EVOO. If you want it "hard" you put it in the freezer

and then whip the heck out of it and wa-la, you have EVOO Spread!

Easy peasy! Really good for making tamales, if so inclined!

You can simmer anything in EVOO to flavor it, 30 minutes is all

it takes. Try garlic or any herb. If you have friends growing pot

try putting the leaves of the plant in oil, I think you'd be

amazed at it's healing properties! I rub it on my knees and wrists.

So very many things to do with EVOO! 2 gallons at Costco for $20!

You might try ghee.

It depends on your problem with milk - but there's ghee out there that's certified casein and lactose free.

You can make your own, too.

on my bread I've always used mayonnaise I.s.o. butter, but that was before I went gluten free.

It's funny because I can have skimmed and partyl skim milk just fine...only margarine and butter upset me--which is odd!

Thanks for the suggestions! I am trying the olive oil, and I am going to look for the Earth Balance. I've seen it...picked it up and said "nah", but I think I was wrong there!

Now I need to see what ghee is.

I like Earth Balance soy free spread, or Nutivia coconut oil. I use them on veggies, etc.

I was surprised that I liked the coconut oil so well. It has a lot of health benefits too.

You may be having an issue with the fat part of the equation if skim products work for you.

If you have a problem with the oils - olive, coconut, etc. that's what I'd consider.

That may be a temporary healing phase or something else. Only time will tell.

I hope it's just a phase...I've never noticed it before. Oh well, for now I'll just try different spreads. I think it's a fat-thing too, because the olive oil isn't doing any good for me either, which is strange -- last week I could eat it no problem :P OH how strange is the body!

I'm using this in my house:

http://www.oliviopro...ablebutter.aspx - the coconut spread (bread with coconut spread and jelly- I don't like it with meat because I feel like I'm eating cake, but with jelly-wow)

http://www.fleischma...our-spreads.jsp - I don't know, if you can eat this, but unsalted butter tastes like the real thing (the closest from all spreads) to me. I'm using the unsalted margarine for cake fillings.

http://www.earthbala...l.com/products/ - check the fridge. This don't tastes like butter, but is very good with ham, salami sandwiches. I'm using this also for baking, or in mashed potatoes.

http://www.smartbala...ttery-spreads-0 -They are to salty for me, but when the earth balance is out of stock, I will buy it.

    • Oh goodness me so do you guys bother to get histamine level diagnosed or do you just treat it as you did the food diary ? taking note of high histamine time of year/ season and diet into your seasonal food diet? I'm pretty good at rotating foods I've done that longer than I've known about my issues from a nutritional standpoint I rotated which is why until the gluten challenge derailed my immune system entirely. it was challenging enough to do that gluten challenge I am not really up for more testing. I have symptoms of IC, POTS, fibromyalgia, and now you reveal that yes histamine threshold are part of the celiac autoimmune party bag too. how do all branches of medicine not find this group the most intriguing group of people ever? Really?Or Do you just all avoid them and go on your merry way? Ennis - what almond milk can you drink ? the almond milk 3 we tried/ bought prior to making my own (had unlabeled ingredient  fortified and thickeners corn derived added. ) I was shocked to call and discover it had it in (not labeled as it was corn not top 8) it finally explained why the right elbow joint hurt but it was a small enough derived amount of derived  corn not to trigger the Full blast corn intolerance symptoms. For this reason and now the orange juice incident I'm really leery of unidentified corn or corn derivatives or highly processed any additive for they are prevalent in processed land.
    • Yeah I have 2 stationary pedal bikes. I use one on the desk sometimes while watching a show and work out my arms. I keep one under the desk and pedal on it for hours a day, really helps with my restless leg issues and stress (just gotta keep moving or I start feeling like a panic attack is coming on trapped by life like a rat in a cage. If you need to know were to find the ground cocoa nibs look up crio bru, they sell it as a coffee replacement for $23 for 1.5lbs they have different origin and different roast levels so you can get different flavored cocoa nibs I get several and mix them up.
    • Yeah the histamine thing hit home a bit for me, as it mentioned everyone has their upper limits on it...explains why green canned fresh tomatoes fine...overly ripe sweet ones....instant puking, and why I have to really limit anything the citric acid, lemon, lime, garlic, onion, etc to very small amounts. Sorta funny how that works. like everything has a invisible number and if they add up to above my limit I am puking Makes eating annoying sometimes lol.  OH bit of a thought, I RARELY make almond milk cause it leaves a almond paste behind that I only have one use for and if sales at the bakery are bad I am better off just buying the stuff at the store and drinking in moderation. ANYWAY I use the almond paste mixed with coconut flour, left over almond butter batches, xylitol, apple sauce, and a tsp of a extract of choice to make the almond butter mini muffins for my bakery. They are a bit of a product of recycled foods lol. Taste great, super moist, grain free, mostly sugar free, and I can eat them no problems...they also freeze for months.   Love making them with our pirate butter (butter rum), Cheese cake butter (dairy free cheese cake extract in the almond butter) or any of the others for that matter.
    • Did you get any of your vitamin and mineral levels checked for deficiencies?  You don't have to be Celiac to develop deficiencies.   Peripheral neuropathy may be caused by deficiencies of B12, copper, vitamin E, B6, B1 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4208100/ Not dreaming can be caused by B6 deficiency. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11883552 Tachycardia may be caused by deficiencies of B1, B12, vitamin C http://www.livestrong.com/article/503879-vitamin-deficiencies-racing-heart/ Ehlers Danlos can be helped by calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, and others https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15607555 And that funky color of your colon, melanomas coli, vitamin E deficiency https://www.researchgate.net/publication/22087649_Ceroid_enteropathy_and_vitamin_E_deficiency IMHO, doctors would rather treat the symptoms than cure the real problems. Hope this helps.
