I've been hanging out on a diet web site lately as I try to lose weight. (Going good so far.) There was a new thread this morning asking for advice on the Bread for Life diet. I'd never heard of it but if it was what it sounded like, yuck. I looked it up. It made me want to keel over just thinking about eating that way! They recommend 12 slices of bread for women per day and 16 for men. OMG. Where's the emoticon that has rainbow puke? I laughed so hard at what they were recommending. Eat all this bread but do not eat fruit, because fruit will mess with your blood sugar. Part of their reasoning for so much bread is that the complex carbs in the bread increase serratonin levels, keep your blood sugar regulated, and keep you full and motivated. (Well if bread is so good at increasing seratonin, I shouldn't have needed Imitrex for my migraines. Just pop a loaf of whole wheat bread. Gluten is one of my migraine triggers.) This is one of the stupidest diets I've heard of! I'd think all that bread, whole grain or not, would clog up the pipes (unless you're an undiagnosed Celiac who gets D with gluten). All those carbs would send my blood sugar crashing, and I'd have the serious munchies. Oh my goodness. Be interesting to see what feedback she gets.

If I ate like that, I probably would lose weight. I'ld be soooo sick!

Seriously, even for a person with no gluten problems, it doesn't sound safe.

Mother Mary, within a few days, I would be sitting in a wheelchair in a mental health facility, my wig all askew, insane with nerve and bone pain and dumber than a haddock, wondering when Howard Hughes was coming to pick me up for our date and if he will mind if my giant purple bunny comes with us.

I just thought of the total calories. At an average of 100 calories a slice ( averaged the two whole wheats my family had). That's 1200 calories in bread. You really couldn't eat anything else in this diet!

K, I agree--the calories, the carbs, the fiber...OUCH!!. My gut hurts just thinking about it. :blink:

although, truth be told, the "IH that was " COULD devour an entire homemade warm French baguette slathered in Kerry Gold Irish Butter back in the day....(fat) buTT, she also wore a size 20 pants at one point.

LOL I probably wouldn't make it through the first "meal." I'd be on the floor crying for my mommy. Something that unbalanced can't be healthy, and it's nutritionally lacking. Reminds me of the cabbage soup diet, where one day you get the pleasure of drinking 8 glasses of milk during the day with your cabbage soup or 8 bananas or some other crap.

IrishHeart, I too was one who could down a baguette or loaf of Cuban bread or package of Pillsbury crescent rolls dripping with butter back in the day. (And today has been the kind of day where I would have done just that.) Oooo, Kerry Gold was my favorite butter!

Oh my word!! I can only imagine the trouble I'd be in on that diet! 12 slices of bread is too much for anyone, never mind the fact I'm a Celiac. I know what 1 speck of cross contamination can do, I don't even dare imagine what 12 slices would feel like!? 😲 My poor Mommy's phone would be ringing all day from me crying that my guts hurt and hoping for it to be quick haha some people will try anything though, I have a friend who has her hands in the next best diet fads going. I won't mention the bread gig to her, I can't stand to watch that..... 😜

A loaf of multi-grain bread--soft inside--crispy, crunchy crust--gently warmed--dripping with butter-----I just died and went to heaven. Aahhhh (or should it be waaaaah).

Ick, I've been gluten free long enough to know not to go there but not long enough to forget how sick I could be. Ugh, even my Mom's homemade right out of the oven bread doesn't tempt me, now that's some good stuff!

    • You may want to keep a food and symptom journal. Our reactions can be delayed and that can make it hard to pinpoint what 'got' us. A journal can help you see a pattern and help us figure it out. Enjoy that pudding.
    • We were in Santorini and Athens in August 2015.   We found eating gluten free easy in Greece.   Their cuisine involves fairly simply ingredients, olive oil, salt, and herbs.   My celiac daughter can eat almost all the grilled meats and vegetables.   Obviously you have to avoid the pita.   Also, be careful of the gyro meat, because some places threw beer in their marinade.   My daughter enjoyed lots of grilled fish, seafood, and meats there. We found the Greeks very friendly and accommodating, when we explained that we have to avoid gluten, the servers knew what that is, and were happy to accommodate us. Airport is different.   I have the habit of calling the airline a couple of week before the flight to make sure they have gluten-free meals for my daughter.   But I always pack backups for long flights.
    • You'll get to the point where you can eat other things, you just have to give it time. Can you do eggs? Hard boiled eggs. They make fast snacks and are highly portable. If you make nut butters, you can just eat it by the spoonful.  I don't like "normal" coconut macaroons, too wet for me, ick! I found this recipe though which drives me insane --- sooooooo good I about swallow my tongue. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/toasty-coconut-macaroons-recipe-1912139 Don't know if you like them or not but re-fried beans. I NEED my carbs!!!!! If I don't get carbs, I will get weak & shaking 30 minutes after eating. I can't eat every 30 minutes!!! So I eat a lot of re-fried beans. I make a big vat & then portion into containers & freeze. If you have or get a stick blender, it will make super fast work of mashing those beans up. Only takes 2 minutes or less. I use olive oil in mine & lots of it -- need that fat. 
    • Coconut, almond butter, and cocoa nib fat bombs...I use plant fats to do it. You can make some great snacks out of fresh almond butter, shredded or coconut flour, and cocoa nibs. Sweeten with stevia for little dough like balls of goodness. Oh you miss potato chips, two options here I like to make my own protein chips with pea protein, or I can have 2-4 protes chips (vegan pea protein  chips made by a company) but they have to be eaten in moderation. Coconut chips....yeah I get Lets' Do Organic ones I can snack on a hand full of them or throw a handful of cocoa nibs in my mouth for snacks. If you like meat, try making jerky. get a dehydrator season your own and just do it.....lucky you can eat meat. I miss making roast in a crock pot....I used to make some of the best shredded meats. My old smoker.....I could make some of the best ribs and roast EVER. The jerky can be made and taken for snacks on the road or while out, crack open a can of spinach (canned unsalted delmonte does not bother me) or pack some stewed greens and have some jerky tear it up stir it in canned keto on the go. Other lovely thing are tuna and salmon if the canned bother you I often find them too salty to enjoy I have taken some and smoked it or dipped it in liquid smoke then cooked in a baking dish then loaded in to the dehydrator. I find doing this I can have that little bit of fish when I want without worry of spoilage (sucking on it and chewing it for a long time make it really satisfying for me) ....SOO doing this next week to try the fish again. Speaking of fish...since I perfected keto bread in my bakery this month......I think I might try making a tuna sandwich with avacado mayo....not had a tuna sandwich in over 5 years.....
