What Could It Be? Pirate Booty? Gator Aid Or Vitamin Water?

Has anyone had an issue with Pirates Booty? I had some today and have no idea what the cause is of frequent painful poop.

I hate those days when you just have no idea. I hate popping the imodium when you don't know what the cause is. Pirate booty has corn in it. Could I be sensitive to it. I also had gator aide and vitamin water. Any ideas on that? So bummed.I post every few months when I have the issue.

I'd have to point 1st at the Pirate. Some pretty long ingred lists on some of those. The 'nutritional yeast' in some would get me, and the soy flour in the veggie one. Remember which flavor?

I have had this type of problem before. What I learned to cope with it is to only try one new thing at a time. I try to only do one new thing per week. It can sometimes take that long for a low level reaction to become evident. That way I know what it most likely to have caused my problem. For a really super sensitive celiac, it could be any or all of those. I'm sorry you got hit. I hope that you feel better soon.

Yep, could be any of the three. I got hit once by Vitamin water so I don't drink it anymore. Not sure why though, not really thinking ti was gluten but something else in it. I am not interested enough in drinking vitamin water to try and figure it out. I just got one a on a hot day to cool off. But never again.

over abundance of vitamin B12 (vitamin water) can cause "D".

What food dye was used in the gator aid? Food dyes cause me grief more times than I care to remember. (both red and blue even if they are gluten free)

keep a food journal to see if there is a link to a certain ingredient or if it is a cross-contamination issue.

I confirmed with myself that I can't handle Pirate's Booty.

I have also confirmed with myself that gatorade is fine for me, but powerade is a no-no.

I don't do the vitamin water drinks, they often have artificial sweeteners which I can't do.

EDIT.... Today, my total intake had been a banana before the gym, a lot of water, a gatorade frost purple after the gym, and 2 hard boiled eggs after the gym. I took a nap and woke up sore and bloated.

The only thing I can assume is the gatorade, even though I had a few of them over the past 2 weeks. Nothing else I ingested could have got me.

Gatorade and I hate each other, it's a mutual feeling I've decided. 😜

Caselynn,

Can you tell me anything specific about your reaction to gatorade? Today's reaction must have been gatorade, which had been ok before. Today's reaction for me is not as severe as glutening, but there is no doubt I have joint pain, bloating, and constipation. Also, my body seems to be running hotter than when I'm perfectly clean.

There is an awfully lot of sugar in Vitamin Water, and it is in the form of crystalline fructose. There is some discussion out in the interwebz suggesting that this form of fructose is actually worse than high fructose corn syrup.

Did your vitamin water have erythritol added? That is also a sweetener, and after drinking vitamin water for days to combat dehydration, I realized i was getting sick (cramps, diarrhea) every day, and when I quit the vitamin water the pain and D stopped.

Google it...erythritol is notorious for causing this kind of trouble. Other sugar alcohols can do the same (mannitol, xylitol, etc.)

That I can! Gatorade makes me feel like I've been hit by a truck. Bloating, dull gut ache and all around lethargy. It also burns my throat, I don't honestly think its a gluten thing, but we quite obviously don't mesh lol I really don't like artificial sweeteners all that much, and I wonder if that is my problem. So I just don't drink it and very seldom do I drink something of that nature anymore, just gotten away from it I guess. Powerade doesn't do it to me though, so who knows...I would think their ingredients would be rather similar....

    • JaneWhoLovesRain, what is odder to me than that there is an older disease that Doctor's have forgotten that explains many of the same symptom's and doctor's do not even think about it today since the "War on Pellagra" was declared over a 100 years and why doctor's don't (at least in the West) think about it any more. Dr. Heaney wrote a nice online article about this topic. http://blogs.creighton.edu/heaney/2013/11/18/pellagra-and-the-four-ds/ Here is fairly recent article about how Pellagra can present in patients and the title says' it all from the International Journal of Dermatology. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/227807440_Pellagra_Dermatitis_dementia_and_diarrhea Dermatitis, dementia and Diarrhea are the 3 D's (4th D is death) of Pellagra. Typically it is only diagnosed today if you are in a subset of the population like an alcoholic for example or you have a gastric bypass. See this article from the New England Journal of Medicine http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMicm050641 and despite all the signs of Pellagra (skin issues etc.) . . .. Pellagra in it native tongue (Italian) where it was first diagnosed was called "rough/sour skin" who knows that today??????? Very few I would venture to guess. The NEJM can only say they have "Pellagra-like dermatitis" it has been so long since any doctor's seen it they can't (with confidence) diagnose it clinically. But taking Niacinamide 3/day for 6 months can help alleviate your symptom's if indeed the DH of Celiac is the dermatitis of Pellagra being medically misdiagnosed. Here is a an article featured on celiac.com about why/how Pellagra can be confused for Celiac disease. https://www.celiac.com/articles/24658/1/A-Differential-Diagnosis-How-Pellagra-Can-be-Confused-with-Celiac-Disease/Page1.html Because they haven't seen Pellagra in 75+ years no one recognizes it anymore. ****this is not medical advice. I hope this is helpful. Knitty Kitty and I are the Niacin warriors on this board. See this thread where Knitty Kitty says Niacin helped the itching of DH. If that is so then it might help your DH (if you have it) and your GI problems too if they are caused by co-morbid Pellagra. see my blog post about where I say "I had Celiac Disease and Developed Pellagra" that talks about this in more detail. Again good luck and your continued journey and I hope this is helpful. 2 Timothy 2: 7 “Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things” this included. posterboy by the grace of God,
    • I should say I am confused about how to interpret---   Does this mean celiac or no celiac?   Thank you all---I greatly appreciate it.
    • KathleenH, I swear by MatteosPizza and they make National Delivery. I have been known to buy them by the dozen. https://www.matteospizza.com/ BellaMonica's is not a bad corn based crust.  By not bad I mean "suprisingly good" that can be bought at most grocery stores. Here is there ZIP locator page to see if they are carried in your local area. http://glutenfreepizza.typepad.com/gluten-free-pizza/where-to-find-bella-monica.html I hope this is helpful. posterboy,
    • Hey all--have Hashimoto's and am being worked up for epigastric discomfort and IBS like symptoms---   My blood work had an IgA within the lower end of normal range, negative TTG, but weakly positive DGP.   My endoscopy showed a "nodular" duodenum with the biopsy stating there was "reactive lymphoid hyperplasia"...   I have a follow-up with the GI in 3 weeks.   Wondering about any help?
    • DH wasn't linked to celiacs until 1967 from my research...
